Man City and their supporters at Wembley

Made my weekend watching the scum get beaten and being sat amongst 30-40 thousand city fans who never stopped singing. Don't think I heard the united fans once and at the final whistle to see half the stadium full of blue shirts doing the Poznan and the other half of the stadium empty was satisfying.

Legs weren't feeling that good today, but for a reason that I am still smiling about. Went to Newport Velodrome yesterday. My word, why didn't I try it sooner. First time on fixed & track, but all good. More than good, bleeding fantastic.

  • I cleaned and lubed my drivechain over the weekend after not doing it for far too long. This morning's commute was beautifully quiet and smooth as a result. The sunshine was just an added bonus :D

Had a car pass me slowly yesterday on a dual c/way, looked across to see this pleasant woman of a certain age helping herself to an eyeful of either me or my bike. Nice. She was just within my age-range too - 15 to 94.

Arrived at work this morning, closely followed by one of our staff in her car, who got out of it and said 'blimey you don't half shift on that thing don't you?'. Yeah I do actually, thanks.

    Nice weather too. Lovely-jubbley.

Gotta love British summer time. Today's ride I passed a marathon's worth of runners and a peleton's worth of cyclists

(well bit of an exageration but there was loads for around here)

And not only that, for the second ride in a row I beat my year's best time :D
  • the sunny weather . the chance to wear lycra shorts for the first time in many years without looking like a badly skinned sausage.

the risde in this morning after stripping all components off my bike last night, cleaning them, lubing them and setting all up properly. was worth 3 hours of my time.

After a full week - four days then - on the commute, today saw me smash the Officially Sanctioned Non Wind-Assisted PB, UK, All-Comers OR and WR for the 20.48m dash from over there to here, 1h 1m 29s - 20.01mph Avg. A bit put out that it wasn't a sub one-hour but hey-ho. It felt good, esp the Finmere bypass - a long climb of about a mile which in winter is a long 12-13mph slog in a low gear, today (all this week in fact) it's been big ring middle gear at around 18-19. Factor in mid-20s on the flats and it was a blast. Going to work should be like this every day.

Kudos to the truck drivers either side of Buckingham who gave me enough space and who hooted in thanks when I moved over at appropriate places, and to the old boy on his tractor on the A421 with a huge queue of traffic behind him who presented me with an empty road for the time that I was pulling away from him. Shame he had to turn off to a village that soon.

Today has been a good day so far. 8)

A first floor flat has it advantages in hot weather #justsaying

A well-earnt nod to Cycology Cycles of New Road in Chippenham. I had to ride most of Friday with a spoke in my back pocket & the front brakes open due to the spoke nipple coming off and rattling around inside the rim from 10 miles in. I couldn't fish it out on Saturday AM but Cycology just opposite the guest house gave me a replacement nipple, trued the wheel and refused any payment. Nice. Good service, friendly couple running the show.

After my off on Thursday went out today on the bike and can say the only pain I suffered was from an ice cream headache and not my thigh.

I live in the middle of the countryside and one of my neighbours is the village policeman. He's got a reputation for being very tough, but fair.

I heard this story about him over the weekend which I wanted to share.

Apparently one of the village lads who's about 10 years old was recently caught stealing. He was caught red handed and the victim wanted to prosecute. It turns out that the lad had stolen a pair of swimming trunks so that he could swimming with his school as he didn't want to be the only kid who couldn't go.

His father is an alcoholic who doesn't work and he's from a large family so they had no money to buy him a pair.

Not only did my neighbour manage to talk the victim out of prosecuting, but his wife also went out and bought the lad some trunks.

Now isn't that the nicest thing you've heard today ? :D

Sometimes it's those passing conversations with other cyclists that tickle me the most. On Monday I was filtering through a nasty bit of gridlock going south on London Bridge when I found myself co-filtering with a couple of women on tourers. One of them asked her companion ''Do we turn left here?'' and I thought maybe I could help with a bit of local knowledge around the diversion. ''Where are you going?'' I asked.

''Round the world!'' one woman replied. Oops, a little beyond local knowledge then and just a little bit vague! All I could do was say ''In that case you probably want to go left...''

sadly all the good stories about the Police get lost in the plethora of the "we hate coppers, cos they are bad people " stories.

which is a great shame as 99.9% of the coppers i Know are decent people.

Had a nice little chat with a chap on a motorbike this morning. Looked like one of those hardened courier types. Anyway, he was amazed that I was stopped at a red light and gave me some praise.

The 3 guys in front all jumped em. tsk tsk.

Today was the sort of ride that you promise yourself and look forward to on those cold wet winter commutes, when you're inside layers, more layers, overshoes, big gloves and carrying enough lights to out-do Blackpool Tower and struggle to beat a poxy 15mph avg speed.

Today was a blast. Just a complete blast. Every day should be like today's ride in.

That was like my ride home yesterday.

Only one stupid driver, the rest were mostly well behaved, quite a few could genuinely be called considerate. The sun was shining, the wind was low and behind me, the roads were dry. Another 18mph+ average. I've only done that once before, on the way into work, somehow I did it on the way home which is generally uphill all the way (home is ~400ft higher than work). Got home with a massive grin on my face. Beeeeautiful :D

A while a go a taxi driver slowed down beside me and asked if I wanted to hold on to his door and get a lift up the harshest hill on my commute home.

    Legend :D

Looking like a substantial tailwind for the way home. I'll be trying for a >18mph average again. Just hope the rain holds off.
