Gorgeous commute today, went via Owler Bar today on the way in, 14 miles of good, country roads, went the short way back, good though it is, I couldn't quite face the 1400ft of climbing, 900 is quite enough after a long day.

Cycling home this evening - and forgetting the fact that it was just bloody lovely, I got a rather attractive lady cyclist eyeing up my legs  :D A REALLY big stare off a lady in a pub car park and a lovely smile off another lady cycling back home.

I'm not bragging - trust me on this. I really am no looker, so these kind of moments... well - for mere mortals like me (and one going through a divorce) they do make a person feel better :)

  • I can't let the anti-rants fall off the front page!

    So...

Spent a couple of hours last night giving the bike a good service. Also swapped the winter marathons for a set of pluses. As a result had a lovely, silent, easy gear changing and fast stopping ride in to work today. And as a bonus, the pluses are about 3mph faster than the winters. Bike looks swish with the last 6 weeks of crud cleaned off it too!

    Lovely :)

Another sunny mild(ish) day and me out on the hybrid. The trails 'round Salcey Forest are very dry now. Last time I did the ride I nearly got stuck. 25miles of simple pleasure :)

The muck from the last ride has been joined by the dust from this ride  I swear I will wash it all down tomorrow, honest.

Lovely evening ride today in the light. Lambs frolicking in the fields.

Spring has sprung (yes I am pretending I did not see the gritter out gritting).

First time on the bike in months without a battery of search lights attached to the bike fore & aft, and did the bike feel nimble as a result of their disappearance. Superb ride, even with the mucky wet rain, one lane being coated in farmers mud, and good headwind all the way in.

And as a bonus, I've discovered that what I thought were socks in the pile of clothes that I brought in the other day, are in fact the other half's stocking socks. To paraphrase Armstrong & Miller, I'm wearing my wife's socks.

    <blissful> ahhhhhh </blissful>

on the way back from City to Charlton via Canada Water and Deptford nodder on a rickety old racer pulls out of a side road in front of me. He then proceeds to RLJ every subsequent set of lights and even manages a pavement detour once or twice until we get to the end of Deptford High St. Normally this kind of thing is on the rants thread but what happened next was wondrous to behold.

I pull up as lights change to amber with peds waiting to cross. He passes the group of cyclists patiently waiting and the police car second in the line of traffic...straight through the lights in front of peds starting to cross. I give a 'we're not all like that' look back at the police car. Lights turn green, I pull away with traffic as does police car...which then pulls alongside RLJer beeping horn. RLJer pulled over and ticketed....beautiful. It's cyclists like that that give the rest of us a bad name.

Now, if we can just get them to take notice of the ASL infringements, SMIDSY, 'YOU SHOULD PAY ROAD TAX' loons etc, commuting would be a much happier place.

The mile of blissful silent riding I had today apart from my breath there wasn't a sound to be heard. No noise from the drivetrain, tyres or wind as it was pushing me along. :D
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Had to smile this morning as I cycled in through the pouring rain. What a difference a year and a half makes. Now I don't look out before I get the cycling togs on, it's just what I do.... OK, had the Night Vision overtrousers on (for about only the 4th time) so was kept reasonably dry. only 2 other cyclists about today, and on Tuesday there as about 15.

Really enjoyed it..... Just wish this cold/chest infection would go away..... then I can get on with some SCR on Maryhill Road, not that there is much there.

Actually had some cars budge out the way a bit today as they saw me coming, so I could go up the inside (cycle lane, with cars parked in it)

Happened 3 times in a row............... amazed.

visited by the p* fairy yesterday - although I suspect the fairy in question was wearing a tracksuit and swigging from a bottle of blue WKD - so stopped to fix the p*, which turned out to be 5 separate holes and require a new tube... so much for kevlar belts.

Anyway, thanks to the 3 out of 5 passing cyclists who slowed down to check if assistance was required and the nice lady for the sympathetic smile.

Popped into the LBS on the way home as I noticed my BB seemed to be a bit loose.

Luckily it only needed tightening it up. He also noticed my rear wheel needed truing, spent some time sorting that and then he adjusted my rear brakes.

"How much is all of that?"

    "Call it £5"

    :D

I felt guilty so I bought some degreaser as well......

I'm going to suffer for this on the way home but:

    12.2 miles:

    36 minutes

Average speed (rolling speed - I don't ever stop on the commute as a rule) 20.333mph :D:D:D

I cannot believe I broke 20mph on a commute. It could've been a bit quicker as well (God damn it :P )

Oh and I got lots of smiles off people as well 8)

Sweet ride in this morning. Lots of cyclists :)

To the guy in the blue 3/4 tights headed towards Elephant & Castle, wearing a black long sleeve top with a black rucksack, you made my morning. Very nice legs and bum :D

me and the missus went out for a leisurely 15 miles yesterday - her first ride since having the baby and it was good to be out with her, up the thames path and then through RP and back down through Ham. Perfect.

Radcliffe & Maconie are now on 6M (or Six Records as they called it). How good is that for afternoon entertainment? Not The Archers, not Steve Wright, not Radio 1, not The Hottest Music Mix For Your Area. Good stuff.

Steep long single track lane in the Chilterns, up I puff, pacing myself carefully. White pickup catches me up but sits a hundred meters back deliberately not hassling me. Well now I am embarrassed that I am holding him up so I accelerate. He continues to give me lots of space but I know he is there and have to keep pushing harder. The hill eases and now I can take a hand off to wave him through. He goes past with a cheery wave and I thank him for being so considerate whilst trying to stop my lungs from jumping out of my body.

So thank you Mr Pickup driver! I think?

Thanks to the driver of a HGV for the near excellent overtake somewhere between headley and epsom - probably the headley road - I forget the number plate but you are a good driver anyhow.

Shout out for Ergon's UK dealer; the grips on the hybrid broke out of warranty, duly returned them to the manufacturer (as CR would not answer any emails on the subect) and they have sent me a new pair, received in the post today.
