    The maps aren't a fixed scale.....in other words you can zoom in or out to suite your preference of display........

    Rotti do you know anything about the Garmin eTrex unit? they seem very reasonably priced compared to other units

    Hi frostys, have a read of this very informative review of the eTrex...........The display doesn't actually show a 'proper' map of the area only a graphical display of your route and where you have walked/ridden...............

    The eTrex is priced around £114 upwards but the dakota 10 which has a proper map display can be got for around £150....so for the extra £36 you get a much easier and readable display with instant view of the surrounding area you are in enabling you to make a choice of route in case of bailouts due to weather etc;

    Hmm decisions decisions... and you can upload from Bike toaster or a similar site? do you need to have a base map or is that already installed?

    The basemap iis already installed but is very basic, by that i mean a-roads and motorways only and literally no paths/trails.

    Myself and Maloo have both installed a higher detailed free map from open street map which shows virtually all paths/bridleways, poi's etc;

    Yes you can create your own route in brtoaster and upload it to the gps, you can also track where you have ridden and download to brtoaster and see where you have been riding, this can also be stored within gps to be used at a later time if you wished to ride that route again.

    For our kind of riding adventures i personally would steer away from the basic eTrex and go for the dakota 10 or higher, my 605 is a cycle computer as well and cost more than the dakota 10, for fitting onto bike stem the dakota 10 or my 605 are very good enabling you to see the map whilst riding.

    They are both waterproof as well.

    If your'e going to llandegla me and maloo are bringing our gps's to compare and you can have a look and see more in dephs as to what they do.

    For the amount of readies you will part with in buying a gps getting as much info before you buy is paramount............

    Not sure if I have detailed maps in that area cos it's not part of the National Park? Just been looking at Garmins and I can't see that they do anything that Viewranger doesn't!!!

    i coundt find the instuctions online so here goes

    run viewranger
    in the options menu select data manager
    then select maps
    you should now see two options - great britian and online maps
    select online maps
    hey presto here are a list of free online maps
    the only think is you can only use them online or cached. you carnt save the intire map.
    so go to the area you intreseted in, zoom to the level you require, and move the map around the area you want to download it into your cache

    you can fix them to a bar with a mount, you sent me a link for one

    you can download cycle routes and maps for freee

    and you can buy a boxit (if your theres one to fit your mobile) that provides a waterproof case and a bike mount
