Box Hill Challenge 2010

The snow has vanished from the summit of Box Hill (Surrey's answer to L'Alpe d'Huez) and as the Richmond Park 3 lapper thread has kicked off in earnest for 2010 I thought it was time to start the Box Hill Challenge thread.

63 forumites posted up last year and times look like they're getting faster every year. 5.08 from 'athlete services' in 2009 was bordering on the obscene. Here's last year's thread:
http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12609993&start=320&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

A quick reminder - The start is the turning into the Zig Zag Road and the finish is the entrance to the National Trust car park opposite the tea room at the top.
Box Hill Stats: 2.5kms, 133metres vertical gain, average gradient 5.3%

Some guidelines (borrowed from Nick's RPx3 thread :) ):
1. Please add your post to the previous list and try to make sure you use the most recent list so we don't lose entries. Remove your old entry and put your new one in time order, emboldened for easy viewing.
2. Avoid drafting cars or other cyclists.
3. Your entry should include your time and month the attempt was made. Feel free to add your weight and the type of rider you are (1st Cat, Sportive, Fitness etc). I've added a column where you can add your watts, watts/kg, HR or whatever - I'm a total luddite so haven't a clue what all that means :)
4. At the bottom of your post add any comments about your attempt - the weather, your appreciation of the smooth road to the summit, what you ate at the café at the top etc.

Mykee and I hit the Surrey Hills today. First time I've made it over that way since September. Great conditions and loads of cyclists on the Hill. Pretty happy with the time for this time of year and felt I had plenty more to give. Sub 6 is my target by June.[/url]

Suppose that means I should post my time too, closest I'll get to the top spot I reckon :(

With a final time of 7:02 from last year, I'm aiming for sub 7 this year and would be stoked with a 6:30 (might be wishful thinking though)
It's the vibe of the thing.

The roads were packed with cyclists today, no doubt trying to make up for lost training during the snow. Managed a 7.28 box hill as part of a long ride with an average HR of 182. Looking at my best for 2009, I did it then in 6:52 with an average HR of 168. Looking forward to getting back to the glory days!

Leisurely effort for me, felt quite good, probably could have pushed 7 minutes. Should've tried harder as unlikely to be back before May time!

35seconds and 40 watts down on last year, despite the kilo lighter this morning and the help I got from it being pretty busy up there, always people to pass although that probably sacrifices a bit of picking the nice road surface.

Glad to be back on the list.

Good effort Jim - it's nice when you see you haven't lost too much form in winter. I was up Box Hill today but saved the legs for an Epsom roundabouts hoon and went up in the 39 from the bottom. There were loads of riders there today which was good to see.
There's no big winter pot holes but the surface is really rough at points - how many seconds would a totally smooth surface save I wonder :?:

All my times have been in the 34 or 36, none of this big ring stuff for me. My legs weren't that good for the roundabout fun, but I still managed to split the group with my first attack.

Jibberjim were you in Addiscombe club kit? I saw someone on Boxhill yesterday in ACC kit who was flying.

Most certainly not! I guess we need club added to the Box Hill list too.

I was in my Kingston Wheelers kit, and I wasn't really flying...

Maybe "choufflard" 2nd on the list last year - was getting in some training but is giving the rest of us a chance to be near the top for awhile.

  • I have never seen so many people riding up the hill as I did yesterday, then half way up after passing a fair few of them, it clicked all these guys are wearing Kingston Wheeler kit out on a club ride.
Unfortunately I didn't time this one.. I've not ridden in 2 months and only one week of riding I did not think I'd have the legs after 2hours on the bike, but I think I still went up in around 6:15. Maybe once I upload my GPS data I can tell what time I rode? Good sign for this year already

There were only 14 of us in my group - and unfortunately you didn't pass me, it would've been a good motivation to have someone streak pass! Although the newbie group also went to Box Hill so it could've been those you were passing, they'd've been slower than us too.

There were a lot of folk on the hill who weren't part of our club run either, I had to pass about 15 people from the front of our group. It was certainly busy out there yesterday.

Shame you didn't say hi - not that you'd've known who I was - I could've moaned at you some more about duathlon run biases ;-)

So that's where all the other cyclists were!

I live in Greenwich so find the ride to Box Hill is perfect length on a nice Sunday (40 miles) but I always climb it from the Pebblehill Road approach as I personally find this more challenging due to the psychology involved with the obvious, great-big-fcuk-off gradient.

I've not timed myself though, I just always feel champion for making it and then look down upon the cyclists who've taken the easy approach road

On the Kingston Wheelers forum there's a suggestion we note age down as well... as I'm now over 40 I'd like to move into the Aloha Deck with the veterans.

Thought I'd put my time up from a couple of weeks ago as motivation. Not pleased with it, but this was on my first long ride in a few months so to be expected. Average HR was only 172, which is lower than I normally have for 3 laps round Richmond Park! Might need to shift about 20kg if I'm going to be challenging you guys at the top

I haven’t been out on the bike for a good few months so it was great to be out last Friday despite the rain / sleet / hail / snow – honestly it was!

Art – a 6:30 in January? I shudder to think what you’ll be posting in June!

Could only manage a 6.43 today. Strong wind on the two key straights though so not so bad. There's some scarily fast riders who were knocking on the sub 5 minute door last year. If I'm 5.59 by August I'll be delighted.

Decided to have a go at this today as part of my long ride, pretty happy with that as my one and only previous attempt last November was an 8:12 and this time I had already been up and over Ranmore Hill before having a go at this. I guess the aim has to be sub 7 minutes this year. :D

Nice start, get your TT bike and aero gear out (surely you have all that as a triathlete) and you'll be sub 7 already, TT bikes are worth a fair bit. Even without that cheating, 7:00 will certainly be doable come the summer days!

Testing at the moment I should have about 40 watts more than my time on the list, so come a nice day in a few weeks I'll be out for my first real challenge at the 6minute barrier...

Yeah, yeah..... as will I, though I hope to be well under 6 minutes this year, particularly by June. I am already 5 kg lighter than when I posted my 6.10 last year, but I want to lose more weight but not lose too much power as my new litheness has made a big difference to the ease of climbing.

Thanks Jim, I am saving the TT bike for later in the year when the weather is best and I may have hit a plateau in my times before I unleash it on both this and the RP 3 lap challenge. As you say though, it is cheating after all ....

First bike lap of the Ballbuster yesterday morning. The next 2 were, er, a bit slower.
