Can someone explain to me once and for all the difference between the 205, 305, 605 and 705. e.g. what's the difference between and 705 with cadence and a 705 'road performance package'

And where's the cheapest place to buy these from!?

own a 305 and 705... wouldnt be without one!

205 an 305 are the older models.

    No mapping
    Black and white screen
    No power Reading

205 cannot use accessories, such as HR and cadence

605 and 705 are the newer models with mapping

    605

    Has mapping,

Can't use any assessories, e.g. HR monitor and Power Meter

    705

    Has mapping

Can have assessors like Cadence sensor, Power Meters and HR meter

As for the difference packages, the road performance includes the city navigator maps, both the 605 and 705 come with basic maps, but they look like they were drawn by a child. If you really want to use it for navigating you need to get extra maps.

Personally though I would prefer to buy the maps on a DVD, because you can then use them on the PCto plot routes etc. If you buy them in the pack, you cant use them on the PC only the Garmin 705.

oh you didn't ask about the 500, but looked at one recently

Its half way between a 305 and 705.

It can use accessories, including power
    It has NO mapping
    Does NOt have advanced workouts

If you can define how you want to use it, expect we can suggest what would suit you

    Hi,

As far as I'm aware the cheapest place to buy them from is www.handtec.co.uk.

I bought a 705 with HR & cadence after Crimbo for less than £270

Try here for product specs: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=160&ra=true

  • You are all very clear and very brilliant thankyou.
I think the 705 is what I'm looking for. Ideally I would like it to have europe maps on it as I spend time in France and I am hoping t cycle through italy.
    BRILLIANT! Thank you!

I just got the 705, can't wait to play with it.
after reading all the replies to my post on this, I'm sure I've got the right model.
    Hope you enjoy yours, too.
I believe handtec are still selling them fairly cheaply...

Probably buying one of these next month but undecided between cadence or no cadence. Any chance when you get yours you could do a couple of runs with whatever cadence sensor you currently use, and see how it stacks up against what the Powertap hub reports?

I read that the PT hub reports cadence pretty accurately when you doing something like a steady-speed effort, but can get quite erratic if your pace is fluctuating.

    Let me know either way!

    Cheers

    Will do.
FWIW, I originally ran my PT without the cadence sensor, it was accurate enough, but a little slow to alter, if you suddenly jumped on the pedals, or slowed quickly, so I plugged in the sensor. Same readings, just a faster reaction.

  • Added to basket ... done!

  • To do the routing on your pc download the excellent programme at biketoaster , this allows you to fully route plan with waypoints and it auto fills for you and you can then download this to the 705 , if you get stuck there is a you tube clip to show show you.
If you need help and hints on setting up your 705 check out frank kinlans blog

Does anyone know if the 705 software is compatible with macs? Also how good are the maps? I often use very minor roads and also would like to use for mtbing. Im guessing the maps aren't OS quality?
  • The standard maps on the 705 are primary routes so that is no good for you , the city navigator has just about all uk maps , the only problem with going off road is plotting the course and the unit will try to navigate you on road [so doing the south downs way for example ]doesnt work on the 705 which is a training tool and a navigation device if you want os quaility you will need a seperate navigation only device like sat map etc

Assuming you're following a track and not a route, can't you just choose follow track instead of follow road on the 705?

  • On the 705 does it not have B roadspreprogrammed?! I'm just looking at the Frank Kinlan blog and it appears to only have A road and Motorways.Surely not?

You have to buy maps or get Open Street Map maps - the Garmin base maps are useless.
    More problems but still living....
  • the standard maps are as described earlier either useless or drawn by a child , to use the unit in the way it is designed you need to get the map package , city navigator is great with detailed maps [pan european on a mini 2 g card] and has loads of usefull/useless info on [nearest petrol station restaurant burger king , gay lesbian help desk etc]
the topo one descibed as an offroad map is pretty pants as it doesnt have bridleways or routingoptions
  • How can I, after looking at these babies not known that all this time. Surely for that amount of money it gives you a UK map which is suitable for cycling i,e, not motorways. Surely? How much is a UK map on top then?

  • The garmin price is around 100 you can get them on the new around 80 and google city navigator or ebay there are some 'grey' versions which sell for a lot less and if you good on your 'pooter you can probably find them for free [and buy a 2g card for a £5 or so] .

Hmm that's pretty crap then. Why is it so difficult for them to come up with the one thing that everyone surely wants...ie a 705 with full OS mapping. I know memory map do a unit with full OS but it doesn't have all the functions of the 705

I want to be able to record my rides and also plot out routes I'm not familiar with and have them displayed over an OS map...the technology exists so why is no-one doing it? :(

OS mapping on a screen the size of that on the 705 would be next to useless. You don't need OS level detail if you're cycling on roads with a GPS that tells you exactly where you are. You don't need the OS detail to work out where you are because you already know!
