  • :o Wow, that looks like it's going to be as fast an smooth as when it was first built. How long's it going to take to bed in???

(note to self: don't go riding it just yet!)

Hopefully in three to four weeks, trouble is we didn't finish so it'll be three to four weeks from when the last bit is laid which might not be for another month or so. Good news is the rain and snow should be helping it bed in quite quickly.

Next dig day should have been today but it's been cancelled. Not sure when the next one is, but I'm sure Jon will be along shortly to fill us in!
  • hi next official dig day is scheduled for the 14th of march but stumpyjon is organizing an extra for next Sunday the 7th

And an extra extra one on Thursday the 11th too cos I'm nice (except if I catch anyone riding stuff before it's open).

Dean, PM'd you back and will email you.

Are parts of gisburn closed for repairs, fancied having a go this weekend.I have also been told its not well waymarked and easy to miss good bits, are there any maps available.
  • its well marked. The roller coaster bit is shut (best bit IMO). It was VERY wet and muddy on Saturday. If you are travelling along way i would let it dry out first.

Yes the coaster section is still shut, we've got another repair day planned for Sunday. Everything else should be open. As for the mud, yes it's muddy in places, it probably always will be.

There aren't many good bits to miss.Went last weekend and its a mire. The whole point of trail centres is they're supposed to be ridable all year round.I'd like to try Gisburn again but i'll wait until we've had a long dry spell.
Where they've got it right its good, where they've got it wrong its very wrong.I'll pass judgement when i've ridden it dry(if ever) but at the minute its a only held off bottom spot in the trail centre stakes by Dulby.

Dean, yes we're on for Sunday, meet at 10 at the top pf the gully.

Paul, you could always come and lend a hand with the repairs, the more help we get now the sooner it will be all weather. Mistakes were made with some parts of the original construction but to say it's all mud is pretty unfair to be honest. The only sections to have really suffered are on the way up to the crag once you've crossed the boulder causeway to the crag itself, Hully Gully and one berm off the old red after the valley. Pretty much all of the volunteer stuff, the two sections of blue, the section through the quarry, the section around the long boardwalk, the old red section through the valley and the sandy berms are all fine. Even the section after the rock causeway isn't that bad, it's when you get to the top it goes completely to pieces.

Even then the volunteers have stepped up to help with repairs rather than build new trail. We got a third of the Gully resurfaced a couple of weeks ago, the weather got in the way, we have an extra dig day this Sunday and another next Sunday. In the meantime Martin has has contractors in moving surfacing materials around so we can mninimise the amount of barrowing we have to do.

We all want it to be like it was in the Summer before it openned, but it's not, some of us are making huge efforts to get it back to that state. In the meantime it gets a little disheartening to hear people say it's all fooked when less than 25% is poor and of that probably only 5% has become a real pain to ride. Hopefully next time you're up there more of it will be resurfaced. If you can spare so time your help would be very much appreciated. Just PM me your email address and I'll send you some details.

I'd love to volunteer,I live 10 mins from Wharnecliffe woods and have been meaning to go on dig days for years. The problem is with work and kids etc i get 3 or 4 days a month free at best and these are precious days taken up by riding.

  • thanks for a great day me and ty had a good day (a few aches and pains but ok ) will try to get on another as soon as poss its not till you help try to repair a track you see how much go's into a track and its up keep if more people turned up and helped the quicker things would get done and reopened quicker

Cheers Dean and you can definitely bring Ty again, worked like a trooper. Yeah I was a little disappointed at the number of people who had ridden the Gully despite it being very obviously closed. Shame they don't come out and help rather than just take the p*ss. That said you two definitely earned your pass today.

I'm glad you only had a few aches and pains, I can hardly move

can i just say, as a nonhardcore rider, i've never yet to have a bad day at gisburn. ok so i don't do the ultra massive stuff (for me anyway) but it's still a great place to get about.

it's outside, in a forest, with people who give up time to build it, i'm just grateful it's there at all to be honest. it's been a godsend to me, and it's got my wife into the idea of biking. so props to the diggermen/kids/women. it IS appreciated.

  • Hi Chaps

We were looking to head up to Gisburn this weekend (11th April)

What condition is it in? Are the berms open/safe etc?

    Thanks

    Lee
  • Berms are still shut I believe.

Lee Quarry might be an alternative option at the moment!
  • A few of us went to Gisburn on Tuesday, it was my first time there and to be fair i thought it was great, the roller coaster part was still closed, but i'm sure i'l get a chance to ride it at some point in the future .... Yes there are muddy parts, but after the terrible winter weve had and the rain other the last 3 weeks its going to be in places .....

All in all i think the people who have put the effort in and made it how it is now have done a brilliant job ... remember they are doing it for free, and they are doing it for people like you to enjoy it ... so i think its a bit unfair to say its knackered and all mud, because thats not the case .....

Anyway, keep up the good work, and we enjoyed it so much we are off back on Sunday ....... :) may see some of you's there .... :)
