We actually got loads done, it was just the gravel that was frozen, the ground wasn't too bad. Got the ramp onto the logs finished, and laid most of the trail down to another log at ground level. Still plenty more work to do on the log section so don't worry, got another section in the pipeline once the log bits done anyway.

Next official dig day after the 14th will be the 14th of March but I expect we'll get another one in before then as well, I'll keep you posted.
To see what we got done, check out... 8)

I think what Terry was trying to link to was the vids of the log ride in action here.

It's completely clear, all the snow has gone (well there's odd banks of snow left from before Christmas but the trails will be clear). Might be a bit muddy though

I wont be surprised if its muddy every time I have been there it has been a mud slide. They didnt build a reservoir there for no reason :D

Indeed, although please bear in mind that weather permitting, we're going to be working on Hully Gully on Sunday trying to repair some of the slutchiness. If we are, then the Gully will be closed to traffic as we'd hate our wheelbarrows to get hit by anybody's bike...

We didnt make it last Sat the fog on the Mway was a bit scarey so we wimped out and went to Rivington. Going to try and borrow my sisters camper van and make a weekend of it next weekend.

    Yay.. i'll be there :)

    Riding Gisburn on Saturday too.

But, TBH.... the Gulley wasn't bad last week. IMO, it should be left to bed in a bit longer.
The route up to the slab area and the jumpy bit needs attention much much more than the Gulley!
    Its totally unridable there!

The way I understand it, there isn't actually anything to bed in - what originally looked like decent natural foundation material has apparently turned out to be mudstone or summat similar, which has just broken down as it's got wet and worn. That's why we're going to try and put down some harder materials on the slutchy bits. Not sure what's planned for the climb up to Whelpstone though. :?

Martin's thinking of bypassing it and building a floating trail, i.e. logs down each side and the trail bed built up a bit. Serve you right if you go off the edge then.

You haven't heard Martin's other plan, there was talk of a concrete pump and a very long hose

Tony's right, it's only going to get worse. To be at its best for most riders it needs to be reasonably smooth.

  •

    Seriously... it'll ruin it!!
it was FINE riding it the other day! Its going to get boggy during wet days! It is a black route FFS!!!
Check my videos on youtube of the gulley... I sliped because of a bit of ice/small rutt. There was nothing dangerous apart from the ice!

IMO, all that needs to happen is that a few rutts need digging out at flattening.

The Whelpstone bit need far more urgent attention. That bits not even a ride any more. You may as well just walk it and start again at the gulley!

Well, IMHO the whole point of Hully Gully is that it's not particularly technical as such, but if you approach it with suitably sized cojones, you get an equally sized "wheeeeeeeeee" factor in return, and having to handle ruts and boggy bits detracts from that.

That said, we're not proposing to turn it into a skate-park type feature, which is presumably what we'd end up with if we did adopt the concrete pump / hosepipe approach - all we're looking to do is armour the parts that are getting particularly worn so you don't have to worry about ruts and bogginess and can just get on with enjoying the "wheeeeeeeeee".

As for it being toooo man-made, that's the beauty of doing it by hand - we can control just how smooth or otherwise it ends up being. And let's face it, it's not exactly a natural feature, or summat you'd come across on your average bridleway. 8)
  • When it first opened it was sooo smooth, you could absolutely fly down it (see vids in signature). Now it's more technical but not so fast. I've been riding the cliff face on the left at the entrance to the big berms, but in the wet it's way sketchy. Can't wait to try it in summer with a smooth trail again!

Did me too, I don't think Martin was serious but I really wasn't sure, no way I'm playing him at poker. I think the key to Sunday is getting rid of the ruts and making sure they don't come back. Like Manccat I loved it in the summer, was even beginning to get up the berms.

Ben I do agree about the section up to Whelpstone. Personally I'd like to see the whole section from the moment you leave the trees resurfaced ASAP but that's in Martin's hands at the moment. Have a chat with him on Sunday, just be gentle, he can sometimes get a tad possessive, mind you if I'd been responsible for bringing Gisburn to life I'd be be pretty proud of what I'd achieved.

  • Oh yeah I love Gisburn! its a great trail and less than an hour away from home!!

I like the idea of some sort of boardwalk over the muddy rubbish at Whelpstone...that'd solve it pretty well!
Never really climbed on a boardwalk either!

Hully Gulley is the big berms section that finishes by coming out through the ruined building, also known by many as the roller coaster.

  • i think i bumped into you jon, and some other guys in the d&p last time i was there, couple of weeks ago, popped back in to say thankyou for your hard work, so i'll say it again, thankyou.

is there any help that someone can give if they can't dig? i enjoy gisburn and would like to give something back, but, to be honest, walking/digging isn't possible.

Hiya clodhoppa74, yes I remember you. If you don't do anything else apart from the concious effort you madse of turning around to thank us you did, you've done more than most. It was sincerely appreciated. At the moment we're pretty digging orientated, not a lot of admin / fund raising / recruiting going on but thanks anyway.

Yeah I read about that on Sunday morning, but the good news is we didn't finish so there's plenty more gravel to move. Likely to be there on the 28th as well. Will try and get some photos up of what we did. Should be a lot better when it's finished. I reckon we shifted 15 to 20 tonnes yesterday, only another 80 to go.

Good turn out to, very much appreciated.
