It may just be a coincidence, but their website says they are off to dig there on the 14th too.
And rightly so, was at a dig day there in december, and it was brilliant fun, you'd be 'flat cap Tony' I presume ?Now that we are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak and not to please ourselves. ROMANS 15:10 -

bigbenj_08 wish I could join you, I suppose going out riding is the next best thing though.
I'll be there on the 14th for sureNow that we are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak and not to please ourselves. ROMANS 15:10 -
Me, don't know nuffing.....
Should be a good turn out on the 14th, Tim the landlord of the D & P was going to try and round up some labour to.
As Terry says, Martin and Nigel have been playing hooky with the chainsaw so even though we haven't managed to get there work hasn't stopped completely which is excellent. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

Hi,
I took part in last year's event in a team of three. I really enjoyed it, but I was pretty exhausted by the end of it.
From what I remember, the race started at about 7.30am. One team member had to run from the D&P up to the timing area in a field next to the sawmill to collect their bike and start the first lap. Last years course was fast and not that technical. I think it was about 9 miles long and most of it was on sections from the old red route. After each lap the riders would have to go over a timing mat and swap the timing band over with another team member. Some riders opted to stay out for two laps at a time, but we preferred to swap as we were usually knackered by that point. The event was quite small last year, but I think it will have more entrants this year. We had a real laugh doing it and I would definitely recommend it. I just hope the weather is as good as it was last year.
Give us a shout if you have anymore questions.0 -
Going with a mate 13th/14th. Riding though, not digging :P2014 Whyte T-129S0

I went up to Gisburn last night.
Sadly, other than the hand built stuff, the entire trail is in a right state.
This has not been helped by people riding around the trail features and cutting up the edges of the trail causing it to mix with the natural earth at the sides.
If you're going to ride a trail centre on a mountain bike, don't expect a runway smooth ride.
If you come across an obstacle that looks too challenging, get off and walk over it or if you must, walk around it, don't make your own tracks.

MFC,
I was up there again on Wednesday night and would have to agree with you. The section up to Whelpstone has got so bad now that it's hard to even spot the track in places. I think quite a lot of it is down to people riding around obstacles, but I also think they've made a mistake with the surfacing on this section as the sandy bermy section and gravelled sections are fine. When they initially built the Whelpstone section I had my doubts that it would survive the Tosside winter and increase in rider numbers. Anyway, that just my personal opinion.
By the way, were you up there last Saturday morning with a bloke who had hurt his wrist after falling off the boards on the way up to Whelpstone. We came across two blokes and one had a Marin like the one attached to your msg?
Cheers.0 -
Not me, I don't fall off!!!!
Must admit, I had my doubts about the surface material in places too. It's a shame really as the hand built stuff has stood up really well.0 -
I have a worry about trail damage, When this youth outdoors centre thingy thats opening at Stephen Park, they will be doing mountain biking from there, and kids being kids will go off track round obsticles and pull skids so the trail surfaces need to be repaired and strenghtened before the kids are on it.
If it's already struggling now It'll only get worse as more riders use it.

The stuff at Whelpstone Crag has been a bit of a learning experience. When they first dug it they thought it was a slatey shale. Turned out to be compacted mud pellets. Lesson learned. Martin is intending to get it resurfaced. People riding around obstacles has also been a bit of a learning curve, something we now try to take into account with volunteer stuff as we're building it. I would hope in future that all obstacles either can't be ridden around (sharpened stakes is my preferred method although not officially sanctionned by the FC) or have chicken runs. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

AAaaarrrghhh I don't believe this - snow
Sorry I couldn't make it everyone, I was looking forward to it.Now that we are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak and not to please ourselves. ROMANS 15:10 -
No probs, Ben wimped as well (well he did go riding so we'll let him off ). Was OK today, no snow at all  , very cold though, the gravel pile was frozen and all the stones were stuck to the ground with ice. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

Sounds like difficult conditions for digging then - did you get much done?
Will there be another dig day for that part of trail, I know there the gully repair job on the 14, but any planned for the log ride trail bit...?Now that we are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak and not to please ourselves. ROMANS 15:10 -
We actually got loads done, it was just the gravel that was frozen, the ground wasn't too bad. Got the ramp onto the logs finished, and laid most of the trail down to another log at ground level. Still plenty more work to do on the log section so don't worry, got another section in the pipeline once the log bits done anyway.
Next official dig day after the 14th will be the 14th of March but I expect we'll get another one in before then as well, I'll keep you posted. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.
