Oh, I should add, off skiing next year. Already decided it will be Giro helmet and googles. #fanboy

It's just the bit between the shoes and the helmets that you can't make your mind up

  • Had to replace the wheels on the commuter (13 Innate Alpha) as the crappy generic ones supplied with it kept going out of true/snapping spokes. Planet X have 700c disc wheelset for £60:

What tyre size range would go with an 18.5 internal rim width?

I'm wondering if the above wheelset would suit my London road bike. It still has the original PlanetX wheels. They're a bit out of true but I'm wondering whether this cheap replacement could be better than getting my LBS to re-true the wheels.

I think at 18.5 your looking at 25c min - that's going from the instructions on my 19mm internal width rims.

Wow, that really is as cheap as these once cut up and cooked, and almost as heavy to boot.
    2.5%20Pot%20Bag.jpg

Am tempted to get a pair purely for the rear as my gf's Fuji disc is currently sat on the turbo with stock wheels and a normal tyre, so this would enable me to fit a proper turbo tyre, and buy a second cassette to make it easier when she wants to go out, and not wear out the standard tyre.
Having said that I have a brand new pair of Aksium discs with tyres that no one seems to want to pay a reasonable price for, so maybe I should just use them for it on the road, and relegate the stock, and likely as heavy as these wheels, to turbo use.

I appreciate that does not answer your Q, bvut looks like Dinyull has that covered above :-)

seems the Aksium very poor quality and dead ride feel has been widely reported, mine are on the turbo where more effort to spin is a benefit and a lesson learned

Sorry for being stupid but are these wheels just for bolt on discs?

In my defence they came with a bike.

They are indeed, so just for disc brake bikes, and have fixing points for a rotor on each, have no rim braking surface, and will be wider at the rear to accommodate the extra girth.

Are they wider at the front as well, or is that the same?

I'm not that stupid! I meant were they just for bolt on discs as opposed to centre lock

Anyone else here buy the Campag Khamsins from Planet X which were on offer for £75 about a year ago?

Freehub started playing up this morning and although I haven't taken off the cassette yet, I'm pretty sure it's going to be in more than 1 piece.

I remember someone else having a problem with them, how did you get on with Planet X?

Mine were bought a year ago to the day so should (hopefully) be covered under warranty, but we'll see.

As a datum, I'm running 28c Marathon Pluses on them no problem. They're currently the stock wheels on the London Road.

Good luck, when the freehub exploded on my PX wheels after less than year of ownership they told me it was a consumable part. I ended up getting the rims rebuilt around an actually decent hub and swore never to buy from them again!

Might have been me. The bearings fell apart on mine after very little use. I got the bearings are consumables line.

My Campag Khamsin rear only lasted about 2500 miles then I discovered a snapped spoke. I weigh 66kg. Shimano R501 better in my experience and cheaper.

Odd I've got a set that are donkeys years old bought from either ribble or wiggle and they've been fine, I've recently changed the pawl spring which broke i also took the opportunity to clean them for once.

I think they were about £140 back then perhaps the quality has gone down, i doubt its a PX specific batch.

Fyi if you see the vento on offer grab with both hands mine are fantastic again online one issue in years and that was an unavoidable crater which snapped a spoke

Having taken the wheel apart last night, it turned out to be the pawl spring

Seems easy enough to replace, but can you point me in the direction of any guide you used? The spring appears it only fits one way, but because mine was in pieces I'm not sure which?! Struggling to find anything online showing it too.

The protrusion or hook on the pawl spring sits inside the hole which you can see on the bottom face of the freehub.

You have to work the hook into that hole first then fit the spring around the pawls.

The only thing, I needed a single pawl spring for my Eurus free hub but had to buy a packet of 4.
So i'll keep 1 and that means I have a couple spare if anyone is desperate.

its a very simple operation and once you get the unbroken new spring you'll see how it fits but failing that there's tons of videos out there, dont do what i did and over grease the freehub when you put it back together i turned that lovely click into total silence, fortunately after a few rides the click is back.
