On for tomorrow but might just stick to Swinley. Late morning.

What time are you thinking for Swinley? I was going to join DK for a SH ride but I think I'm too knackered to have fun there.

You know me. I'll go with the flow. Likewise a bit knackered anyway to have fun in the hills given the mud may be hard work. Not that Swinley is bone dry any more. Not too bad, but will get muddy.

I actually cleaned the bike post ride today!

Maybe bouncy bike tomorrow for some added comfort.

Pity, we added in the Bombhole and Corkscrew (which is still sh1t IMO) but enjoyed the singletrack there and back which we haven't done for a while.
Also got a chance to test out the kevlar pads - excellent, more feel than the sintered, hopefully will last longer than the organics I tried.
And thel33ter didn't even crash. Although Mtbcrazy did. And guess what, DK was late.

I really like Corkscrew for some reason. Just seems like a nice place to session a few times and try to really improve specific things (and without having to slog back to the start like Deerstalker and so on). Was quite pleased with my performance on it too, got down to 1:01 min on it as my best run. Then Dan managed to do it in a Strava 4th best 0:44 which pissed on my chips a bit! Ah well, I still beat him through Labyrinth. Looks like I've work to do on Seagull too, must stop pootling lazily on that one.

Clearly he attached his phone to a passing stranger's dog, chased it down the right trail and then recovered his GPS device and uploaded the results. I've seen it happen many times before...

Why do you guys always go to places there aren't any public transport? Feel like you do it on purpose to get rid of me :D

  • I'm going to be south anyway Sunday, found a shop doing 0% on Specialized Status 1s and I'm going to lay down a deposit and claim my beast! Going to Devon for the bank holiday so will hopefully have it by then and going to try it out at Gawnton. Anyway... I'll be south on Sunday so SH was my original plan but it seems a couple of people are talking about Rogate which is apparently good in the wet so that'll be my plan for now... DK didn't you say you want to check out Rogate?

Would like to check out Rogate. Depends how serious the place is. Don't want to look a prat taking chicken runs everywhere if it's all big jumps and drops :D.

Gawton also on the list, but again the easy option at first. Might be down in Devon for the bank holiday also, not sure yet and not sure I'd have enough time.
  • Whoops, I added an 'n' where there shouldn't be one! Rogate doesn't look to crazy from pics and footage I've checked out but I guess it's always hard to tell. Depends on the weather though, a little bit of rain is fine but massive downpours and there's no point (IMO).

You may have seen some vids but here's what I looked at, pretty comprehensive by the looks of it and the runs don't look quite as technical/rooty as Aston. You can just see in some bits the run grades and there's defo a 1 dot and a 2 dot in there so hopefully they should be okay:

Looks like it's fine enough to start out small and build up. Some vids I saw were just the bigger stuff.

Weather dependent of course. Holds up better there apparently, but we're in for a lot of rain.
  • DK Re: Gawton bank holiday - I don't know if you're planning on being down on the Monday, 7th, but this looks like it might be fun:

May 19/20 - Anyone up for a trip to Wales? Thinking either CYB or Marin/Penmacho at ByC. Benefit of the latter being more accomodation/pubs/things to do other than ride. I Can put my 2 racks on the roof and carry 3 humans, 1 bike + kit inside the car so thats 3 sorted for transport. Anyone interested? Shouldn't be too expensive if you're ok with sharing rooms (note not beds, even I wont stretch that far).

Are you thinking of going Fri eve or Sat morn? Sorry for asking an obvious question but what does CYB and ByC stand for i.e. where are these places exactly!? BTW I'm interested but all depends on work. Also I can drive myself leaving your spaces still available.

Cyb is coed y brenin. BYC is some other Welsh place. Both are in North Wales thigh.

Betws-y-Coed. Pleasant touristy Welsh place near Marin/Penmachno. Probably expensive to stay.

Dolgellau is nearest proper town to CYB. Cheap places to stay round there, a few pubs and about one restaurant to eat at (very nice though). At least one that lets foreign folk in. Was a hotel serving food but was locked up despite people in there. Pubs seemed a bit dodgy and most people in the place gave you dirty looks and spoke proper Welsh! ;). Still, on the cheap, a few take aways and stock up with stuff from the supermarket. Marin/Penmachno are drivable from there too, just a little longer.

Prefer CYB to Penmachno but then I gather I only did one of the loops at the latter. Was all a bit too XC across bleak moorland and fireroads. Nice descent at the end though. If I want moorland rides I'll do that back down in Devon. Still, maybe I should give it another chance, and haven't done Marin.

Then there's Snowdon. Are we into the voluntary ban season yet?

I found people in Dolgellau pretty friendly actually, one old dude showed us to the curry house 'n all. As for Betws-y-Coed, you could always stay in Llanrwst as a probably cheaper option, it's closer to the Marin too. Even smaller than Dolgellau mind you.

I'll be unlikely for this I think, May is silly season for Wembley matches so I'm probably supposed to be working.
