Was running late today but was about 10 mins away and hit that diversion. I was in the diversion traffic for about an hour and there was just cars everywhere ahead so I ended up turning back!

That's really my only route to work and back, Monday will probably be a nightmare.
Tried calling you but signal was lousy.

On Friday all was fine, obviously as a Londoner ... came via M3 and that was empty. Back home from Supra's pad and chuffed to see people with throbing smiles post MegaAvalanche experience. Beers and Cognac flowed, tobacco was smoked ... epic stories were told. What's not to like after Friday's solid ride? Hope you lot enjoyed rainy weather, but I happen not to like it that much cos my outfit gets a bit dirty. Ta.

Throbbing smiles? Is that a euphemism?

You could slap them all for all your worth, but they still would smile. Psycho house.

I want to go to Mega.

Just woke up. Shoes still soaking. Trying to dry them. Still may try to get out but not going to make it for 10.
  • My first trip to Surrey Hills this morning. Got to Dorking train station about 10.30 and got to The Plough Pub about 11 just in time for it to start pissing it down! I carried on regardless though and although I was soaked and muddy I had a good morning. I only found 1 official trail, Barry Knows Best and did that a few times. I really liked BKB but wanted to find Yoghurt Pots, Telegraph Road and a jump area I've heard of too but didn't have the time before I had to leave.

It's cool there's a little bike shop at the bottom of Radnor Rd. Is that always there?

    Was anyone else there today?

You must have ridden past loads between Coldharbour and Peaslake.
BKB is part way down Holmbury Hill.
If you were at the top where the monument is (rock thingy with benches around it) Yogpots would have been down the wide trail that heads away from it - about 100 yds off to the right.
Telegraph is down, left, left from the end of yogpots.
Bike shop is one thing, but the little shop sells decent sandwiches and awesome cheese straws.

Bike shop is Pedal and Spoke. Been there a few years and open most days. Not a chain, just a guy and his mates who love riding decided what would be good in the Surrey Hills is to have a little shop to serve all the folk who visit. Very friendly bunch and Howard who runs it goes out of his way to chat and know the customers.

Yoghurt Pots is basically off from the view point at the top of Holmbury. Just continue up the road from BKB and at the top car park entrance, go left into that, up then continue straight on (right-ish a bit) and up until you reach the top. From the view point (can't miss it, amazing view!), turn around and head straight and on the right is the entrance to Yoghurt Pots. Just watch the other riders where they go.

End of Yog Pots, turn right on fire road, then take second left fireroad and immediately left up a trail. That's Telegraph. Follow it all the way to the Youth Hostel.
  • I got the feeling I was missing loads of stuff but I didn't really have the time to get lost and explore as I needed to be gone by 2pm. Also my plan was to ride the named trails first to get the lay of the land then try to find other stuff afterwards but the rain and time didn't permit.

What time were you riding? I saw quite a few areas that seemed like they had some good jumps about, one place in particular on Coldharbour Ln before you get to The Plough but because it was pissing it down I thought I'd go back to it but never got the chance.

    Where do you normally ride?

Only just moved to London so only been on a few rides so far. The guys at Nirvana have built a load of the jumps. We were riding from 11 until about 2.30
They do a skills/freeride spin every Saturday where they session the jumps and do other skills stuff.

Have you done the Sat freeride sessions before? How much is it? The website seems to say the rides are £100 which seems far too much. The website is pretty out of date though. I'd love to do one of those, looks really fun.

£100 is for a private guided ride, not per person. I thought the normal rides were free, but never been on one.
A lot of the pics of trails are way out of date.

    Does a bit.
I think between us we know most of the trails, including the sneaky non public ones.

What were the conditions like over Ranmore? Whenever it's wet it's not very nice. Likewise Redlands.

@Blind Danny Johnson and others - feel free to post if you're planning to go somewhere and others may join, or join in on one of our rides. As said, between us we know pretty much most the place, though individually we can still get lost :D

I'm definitely going to join you guys soon, I don't actually have many people to ride with, a couple of my friends occasionally join me but they're not that into it and since I got my mountain bike I'm hooked so am going to try to get out of London for a ride most weekends if I can.

The only reason I didn't bother trying to hook up with anyone this weekend was because I was short on time and didn't exactly know when I would have to leave etc so I thought I'd just have a little blast by myself and see what I could find. It turned out to be a bit of an ordeal actually!

The route from Dorking Station to Coldharbour was a bit of a bitch, just one big up hill ride basically and then it started pissing it down and I got lost in the woods for a bit which was actually quite fun but I didn't find anything really great so i sought out Barry Knows Best from instructions I had and found it, rode that a couple of times which was cool then had to leave but I fucked up and the nearest train station was shut so I had to ride the remaining distance to Tadworth, where I was going to meet my Girlfriend and her Gran, covered head to toe in mud.

Anyway I did have fun and Surrey Hills looks pretty cool so I'm looking forward to riding all the othe other trails sometime.

Cool. Are your pics entitled 'Intro Series March 2011' from one of these sessions at Surrey Hills?

Been following this online mag for some time, but just been reminded that the first issue had a guide to Surrey Hills, complete with GPS download and video.

    http://www.imbikemag.com/issue1/

    Free by the way.

Latest issue even has the dude from Pedal and Spoke in it (and yeah, it seems to be a locally produced magazine).
