Redlands. But must be quite old as the northshore stuff is gone.

I've heard the term North Shore before, I take it it refers to a style of terrain or mountain biking that has been influenced by riders/riding from the North Shore of Vancouver? Is that about right? What sort of terrain/riding does it refer to exactly?
  • Just found this. Kind of explains it all:

Saturday, 10 am Swinley anyone? We could do the 'Big Loop'. For those who don't know thats the loop I posted a while ago that :

    Starts at the lookout:

    out to >
    New England Switchbacks
    Monaco
    Watsons Wander
    Satans Grotto
    Seagull 1,2 & 3
    Tern
    Stickler new and old
    Tank traps
whole nine yards for a bit down the bermed trail
    Jump gully
    Rollercoaster 2
    Car crash moor
    Club house for a break.
    Deer Stalker
back up to the Club house
    Baby Maker/Labyrinth
Back to car crash moor a different way
    the drop offs
The downhill next to the drop offs.
Back up to the reservoir XC style
    A few more drop offs
    DH to the gully.
The whole nine yards but avoiding the bermed trail
    and back to the lookout.

Its probably about 13 miles all in. Anyone who's not familiar with Swinley welcome to join, as its a good route to learn your way around. This route covers pretty much all the main trails in one direction or the other and doesn't go over any trails twice except a little bit of Car Crash moor. Depending on how were going we may also stray into crowthorne wood for a while. Hopefully be back at the lookout between 12 and 1. Will be a fairly good pace, not too much stopping.

Meet at the wooden Gazebo in the Lookout car park? Given the current weather, should be very dry on most of the trails, so put those wet weather tyres away.

Ben that sounds liek too much riding. No time for epic stories to tok about, nor any good time to see the bling.

I'll choose not put too much stake into someone's opinion who is admittingly terrible though
  • I'm up for a bit of Swinley Sat morn.

I'm on, providing I can get the bike back from thel33ter, fit new mech and pads, and get there roughly on time.

@thepriory - as with most 'ministers', he's better at talking than doing.

@BDJ - that would be it.

Think will squeeze some riding into Friday after lunch time. This weekend i wouldn't be able to join you lot, but next weekend most probably. Enjoy weather if you can.

p.s. Facebook's recent talk was about beers, who is up for it ? Supra as it sounds organises it.

  • The Big Loop sounds great, but knackering! Unfortunately I can't do this Sat. Definitely up for next weekend though.

Looks like a fantastic route. Wish I could make it but I will be with a group of Scouts getting rained on in our tents this weekend! Shame as it would have been a good chance to put my rejuvenated bike and Rebas to the test.

I suspect I would just slow you lot down anyway, but I may try to retrace the route from maps next time I go there.

    Have fun!

Might pop along for a Swinley loop. 13 miles is fairly normal, though bit faster than a typical weekend warrior pace. We can be out the entire day and only get that distance done. Mind you, usually at Surrey Hills with plenty of climbing, stopping, talking, eating :D

Waiting to get a nod or otherwise from P&S on their demo weekend though and when/if I can get a go on a Nomad. If that goes ahead I'll be fixed to a day/time at Surrey Hills.

As an aside, how well does GPS work in the forest?

iPhone and Garmin are both fine. DK's Nokia is a little random though.

Now I figured out how to get Trails on iPhone to track every 5 yards, very well.

Thats cool - with Open Cycle Maps on Viewranger much of the Swinley stuff is marked already which would make finding things even easier. Doesnt have some bits on it but my other map does.

It turns out it's Sports Tracker, which lacks GPS filtering on the Nokia version. It was there in the original back when Nokia owned it but since going independent they removed it in the new sexy version for no explicable reason!

Since found out that the new Android version of ST has a GPS filter option. Not sure about the iPhone version.

Tried out Endomondo again. GPS seems better, but the app on Nokia is very basic compared to ST. ST has nicely cached Open Street Maps to navigate with. But as mentioned, Viewranger can be used for this also.

Have updated a couple of bits on the map to inlcude some stuff like Watsons Wander which was on OpenCycleMap but not on the one shared round the forums.

Is there anything else I can label, or anything wrong with this?

  • Tern is missing. A little natural track, which is fairly straight which runs along the right side (as you look at the map) between Starposts 5 & 6. Its a bit bobbins but its nicer than using the fireroad if you are not using Seagull 3.

And the Stickler is the old sticker. After the ride I will send you the GPX so you can update further. Good work APReading!

PS - Also, with Trails you can import GPXs and follow them on your phone, which is nice.

Dont know if this is the new Stickler or not but have updated it to fix where this map is different to Open Cycle Maps.

GPX would be great -thanks Ben!

Stickler looks good. Where the whole nine yards splits below the 10 post, the top line is Monaco.

I'd like to link the little puddle avoidance trails from lsp to usp on the left, that would give a loop to and from usp which would be nice. We could call them tern and re-tern.

    Hi,

I would like to join you on Saturday, but I don't know where is Swinley Forest and how to get there using public transport.

Does anyone of you know how to get there from central London? If someone is commuting from London I would like to meet him.

    Thanks!
    Bruno.
