  • I've heard issues of the batteries not being very well sealed. Mine appears to have 2 layers of heat shrink on it and looks fairly well sealed. Is this a recent upgrade, or should I wrap it in gaffer tape to be safe?

I just got these lights yesterday, and it mentioned something about silicone sealant on both ends of the battery. Gaffer tape or silicone sealant will do. It's going to stay there anyway, unless you like opening up battery packs. 8)

Mine arrived from the states a few days ago. Had to buy a adaptor to convert to 3 pin. The battery was already charged and all seems good with the build and performance. Super, super bright for 52 quid plus p&p. Considering the size of the light unit, I was amazed when I swithched the thing on. I'm sure everyone who has bought one of these lights has had a similar 'Eureka' moment when first plugging it in.

It's a little bizzare that the a) the wire appears out of the front of the unit and b) you have to disconnect the from the battery in order to switch off the unit completely (the green switch LED remains lit otherwise). The battery pack is not water proof although the batteries themselves appear to be sealed.

Small niggles for the ludicrous price of the product though.

I have a GT XCR and the battery pack fits nicely under the stem. I will see how this works in anger. If it proves to be unsuitable, I may seal the batteries in a water bottle and feed from the holder.

  • A few people have talked about batteries in a bottle.

My batteries are tiny, much smaller than my mobile phone. Is this normal?

Yesh. The battery pack is relatively small, but the hours you get out of such a small pack is great.

  • The battery is on charge now, the charger light went from green to red as I flicked the socket on.
I'll give it 3 hours and see how it's doing.

The light is now green again! :)

2hr 10 mins. (I know it wasn't flat, but at least it has some kind of smart charge technolgy)

    It appears to.
In the instructions, it states there is some protection against overcharging.

  • What are these instructions you speak of?

i wrapped mine in some self amalgamating tape right round and onto the wire that comes out of the pack seems good.
    Fancy a brew?

  • My battery bag is nowt like that. It's more like a pouch that I coud attach to a belt. I've plenty of velcro straps knocking about and I'm a dab hand on the sewing machine, so I can see a bit of a modification coming!
  • If anyone's interested, I've taken some photos for comparison. All at F2.8, 1/25sec, ISO400

    LED unit:
Undo the screw on the light bit. stick some bathroom sealant in the hole and between the slots around that hole....screw the thing back on again. put the rubber band thing back on swiftly or you'll end up with a blob of sealant getting the way.

Unscrew the front lens holder. Remove the clear lens. smear light strip of sealant around the lens. put back in holder. replace clear lens in holder. replace holder.

    Battery Pack:
use bathroom sealant or a hot glue gun and smear all around the opposite 'ends'. Then use household electrical tape and 'bind' the battery like you were preparing the thing for a burial under a Pyramid. (That happens a lot round 'ere). Apply slight 'stretching' of elcectrical tape when applying and it will 'pull' itself into the battery pack.

Took loads of pictures of above, but have never got around to putting them anywhere.

How is everyone finding the cable length??

i've got 2 mounted on my bars and one on my lid.

The one on my lid doesnt appear to be presenting any problems as the battery pack will be attached to one of my hydration pack straps. But i'm finding i have too much cable for the bar mounted ones. have you just tucked the cable into the strap when attaching the pack to the stem?

just dont want any loose cables to get snagged etc

edit - managed to secure the two batteries using a ski strap, and then wrapped the second ski tie round the whole lot to secure the cables.

considering the straps were only £1.99 from decathlon its not too bad a solution (although it does mean i need a new set for my skis)

You ride with 3 Magicshines :) That's class!

I'll go up on the Oxfordshire ridgeway tonight at about 8pm. Turn your lights on and I'll see if I can see them <grin>

I have to wind the cables up in a very unprofessional manner, hide them under the strap thing. I sometimes wrap a strip of velcro around it ...just to make sure it doesn't go its own way. Also - found the cables don't feel 'right' when it is very cold. They've never been damaged or caused issue, but they do feel rather 'fragile' when it is less than a couple of degrees C.

One of my lights is having a moment, where it will work on Full beam for 10 mins (full battery) ...then start flashing (hi speed) on it's own, with no input from me. Not sussed that one out yet. I use it as the head light on low and it seems to last forever.
  • I've got two of the DX Magicshine lights and I've found that the velcro battery pouch isn't too good (slides around on the bar/stem/crossbar) I've made a couple of battery holders from old drink bottles. Take the top off and snip the two "bars" that hold the central "plug" then remove the slidey up/down part, slice it down the side with a stanley knife (other craft knives are available) then get some closed cell foam to line the bottle, shove the battery pack in, pack it out so it doesnt rattle, feed the wire through the cap hole, slip the wire through the slit in the up/down bit and replace, the base of the plug then slots quite neatly into the hole. I've araldited mine in place. This set up also keeps the battery from the cold and should therefore increase run time. I've had mine running like this for a few months on a 22 mile commute and it hasn't set on fire during charging (yet  )
  • Me and my mates all bought the Magicshine mj816 theyre absolutely brilliant the batteries last well and the build quality is to a very good standard. However my mates battery leaked some "juice" he complained and magicshine sent one out the next day good cust services and my brothers battery seems to loose charge qlot quicker than everyone elses. Other than this no problems and were all happy with them.

A little tip for anyone who thinks the "o"ring just doesn't cut the mustard. We all took the jubilee clip type brackets from our old cateye lights and fitted them to our mj816's. The more modern cateye lights use a moulded clip on the torch body itself but the slightly older ones use a screw on clip. It might sound to you unnecessary but the difference it makes when your hoofing it down a trail in darkness is unbelievable it's an essential mod to the magicshine and I don't know why magicshine don't make a bracket for the units.
