I have a set of AYUP's that i am happy with, but I like a bargain, and I always like a bit of extra light :D

Plus myself and my gf have commuting duties that are bound to require extra lights, so I am trying to justify more purchases to myself.....

I am torn between going for the magicshine or some of the torch style variants instead, as in my mind it would also be useful to have a torch to hand as and when it's needed (more practical no?) for camping or whatever really, rather than a seperate light and battery pack.

Plus the AYUP's have their own battery pack as well, so if i wanted to run a magicshine or 2 and the AYUP's on the bars, i'm not sure I would have room for 3 batteries

So has anyone on here used the magicshine and the torch equivalents?

    How do they compare??

  • How long does it take to recharge the Magicshine / Luma?

I have the Magicshine but my charger doesn't work.

I have a charger (from my old Electron light set) that fits the magicshine battery pack, only thing is it won't tell me when it is fully charged, if I knew how long roughly it takes I could stop charging it so I don't cook the battery.

Will it be ok to use another charger?

yeah my light stays green when plugged in, what colour does it go when its charged?

    is it knackered?
  • Silveringsurfer, whereabouts are you doing your night riding? I've been doing some regular rides on a Thursday night with a fella called Nick from Bideford.

    I din't know!

Someone told me in another thread that it should turn red when plugged in and then turn green when fully charged.

    Have you charged yours yet?

It was me, and that's what mine does.

The little light on the charger itself should go green when it's plugged it but with nothing attached. Then red when you connect your pack up to it, then green when the pack has finished charging (assuming it's like mine).
  • No it doesn't

It goes green when you attach it to the battery pack but stays green when you plug it into the wall.

I tried to charge it for an hour like that but it didn't work.

I can use a charger I have from ny old electron light set which fits the magicshine battery pack but don't want to cook the battery (the charger has no indicator to tell you when the battery is charged).

Roughly how long does it take to fully charge the battery?

for alternative chargers try the nuke proof or the lulu charger from on one which are the same unit . after my magic shine charger fried i used my nuke charger and as its a smart charger it cant knacker the battery plus it has led,s telling you when its fully charged. also fully charges between 3-4 hours. nukeproof charger £28.99 dx light £48 ish so buy both and have a powerful light with a smart charger. still cant believe people still knock the magic shine light. its less than £50 posted yet is more powerful than a £250 nuke proof extreme light and has the same run time as nukeproofs 4 hours on high is optimistic i have both lights so can back up my claims. the only weak link in the magicshines armour is the charger and delivery times but the light is worh waiting for and a charger is easily bought. ive fixed my dx light to my helmet and managed to fix the battery to the back of my helmet. i will post some pics on here. i see people on here saying how good the hope vision one is but it only has 1 third the power and no batteries. for the same price buy the dx light and the smart charger. i can also confirm that the strobe mode on the dx light pisses motorists off big time

  • Thanks for the advice.

I found the Nukeproof charger on CRC

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=41031

It's a bit steep though at £28.99, can't find it anywhere else cheaper neither.

    Are there any alternatives?

on-one will probably stock the lulu charger soon for a lower price but they dont have it yet. i think £29 for a smart charger is reasonable enough. the fact that you can leave your battery charging indefinitely is good . i got sick of standing over my magicshine charger waiting for it to turn green

Ye it probably makes sense, and like you say for a smart charger it isn't too bad.

I could get another magicshine charger from here:

    http://www.geomangear.com/index.php?mai ... fufridofd0

But it would take ages (I'm still waiting for 'O' rings from them) and it might break quickly.

    hhhhhmmmmmm.

thats just the basic unit the light comes with. its worth buying a better charger because of the fire risk. if i had not been there to quickly unplug my dx charger when it went pop my house could have gone up in flames. another idea is to buy a 240volt-110volt converter from maplin. they cost £8.99 and will run your charger at 110volts. i reckon 240 ish is pushing the charger to the max .i normally used one to charge my light but i lent it to a mate to charge his magicshine so perhaps my charger fried as it was used to using 110volts and the sudden increase was too much too handle but for the price of the replacement charger and converter you may aswell go for the smart charger

  • might have to look into that smart charger myself, but need to wait for my lights to arrive first. ordered the magicshine on 23/10, and the other one (the one with the helmet mount) on 29/10, but dx have them both listed in my orders as waiting on supplier.

they were kind enough to send out the plug adaptor i'd ordered and that should arrive today or tomorrow (not that it does much good without the lights lol)

You can get a plug adaptor correctly fused from Asda for £1.50, much better quality then the Dx one.

DX seem to be getting slower and slower with their deliveries, try Best offer Buy, they got some to me within 10 days only last week!
  • Hello. I got this light today from dx....

When i connect the charger to battery, the led remains GREEN.

I noticed that if i squeeze the plug, led goes RED. So the chargers plug is not that well built. The light itself works as it should with the battery connected so the problem is in the charger plug.

I just tried squeezing the hell out of mine and no joy, I just opened it up aswell but can't see anything out of place (not that you can see much).

Because my battery is completely flat when I connect it to the charger it doesn't even go green now, even when I plug the charger in to the mains. I have no led light whatsoever.

It is a real shame really as the light itself seems really well made and feels like a quality item. The charger though is just pants, very poor quality.

I think I might go for the Nuke Proof Smart Charger, atleast I know its good quality and will hopefully last.

ive charged mine once but it just stays green now aaarrrrrrgghhh

it better not be shagged!!! ill get on to deal extreme
  • Annoying isn't it!

Let me know how you get on with DX, the only thing is I need one asap, I can't wait 2 months to send it back and then for them to send a replacement!

It might be a common problem though.
  • Ok - I think I've tracked down the manufacturer of the Nukeproof charger and it's stats. http://www.aultkorea.co.kr/_upload/pdf/JBL910.pdf they sell for $30 in Korea where they are made! Now we either need to find some or another charger unit with the same output etc as there is no way I'm paying Nuke Proof for one!

Better price than the Nuke proof charger at £26 if it will work.

  • Hi,

Sorry if these questions have been answered before but here goes:

Do you need an adaptor for the battery charger?

Is the battery pack external? if so, i take it you need to mount this on the bike with the light, so how do you do this?

Is there a link to the battery pack, for ordering spares?

Are the run times accurate? (3 hrs on high??)

    Many Thanks,

    Louis

Yes from any supermarket (I use asda) for about £1.50 much better quality than DX ones

External battery Yes, mounts via the velcro flap on the battery bag, bag also has plasitic strap clips for adding a extra strap if required (not provided). See pic on link below

    Order spare Battery from www.geomangear.com

Runtimes about 3hr 10 average but utilising mid mode for boring bits can get you through a ride 5 hours-ish

    Regards

    Chris
  • I think I'm just going to order the nuke Proof charger from CRC, atleast I know it will be with me quickly, work and I can get back on the bike and start enjoying nightriding again.

Unless someone can suggest something else, forever hold your peace.

Better price than the Nuke proof charger at £26 if it will work.

    Cheers for the help.

The link doesn't work, but for the extra £2.99 and free delivery I'll probably go with the Nuke Proof.
