Replaced chain on my 'winter' fixed gear bike that only ever gets used in rubbish weather. Chain checker said that the previous one was near its limit, but not over.

Bike sounded like a tractor this morning with the new chain. Guess the rear cog needs replacing too.......

Front wheel rim looks like its in need of replacement too, as it's getting alarmingly concave. I'm planning a 650B wheel build for the wheelset to go in their place.

Cleaned the singlespeed and the winter bike yesterday. Got caught out in "biblical" storm on Saturday whilst out on the winter bike, so it needed a good going over given the brown marks on the chain....
Also tried to chase down a creak seemingly from the BB on the Solace since fitting the new crankset. Re-tightened the left crankarm, tightened chainring bolts, pedals and also the headet and stem bolts (and stem face plate). Still creaks when climbing out of the saddle, driveside only i think

Fixed puncture, fit a new tyre, cleaned the bike, lubed the chain and attempted to fit mudguards. It turns out that Michelin Pro4 Endurance v4 + Shimano 105 brakes + 2016 Giant Defy 2 are a no-go combo for Crud Roadracer MkIII's. FFS. Bike is dirty again, after a single 10-mile commute. Will need to talk to LBS about Giant's own mudguards.

Note to self: next commuter bike will need to have disc brakes & nice mudguards.
  • Cleaned chain, on commute bike which I hadn't used since being on holiday, which was a thick black mess! and found that my saddle height was way off, after using my *fun* bikes for a while. not quite sure how I managed that! tirednesss I suspect, the bike had gone though a phase of loosing bolts etc, after I increased the milage.

Dealing with aftermath of weekend's racing:
Replaced bent mech hanger on daughter's bike
Ordered bits to rebuild my favourite rear wheel that daughter was borrowing when she bent the mech hanger
    Enrolled daughter in coaching day
    Cleaned glue off carbon rim
Ordered tape, to glue tyre back onto rim when I've rebuilt it
Ordered new spark plug for pressure washer
Removed broken carbon bars from race bike
Built jig to support broken carbon bars while I repair them
    Repaired broken carbon bars
Started repair of friend's broken seatstay (casualty from a previous weekend)
Repaired cracked carbon sole of road shoe (since I had the carbon out anyway)
Checked bikes/wheels/tyres etc to confirm we still have enough working equipment to be able to race this Saturday

I have a nagging suspicion something else needs doing that I've forgotten about...

Removed the oversized TCS Nano's and fitted the new Gravel King SK's this morning. Probably better practiced in the "art of tubeless" these days but they seemed to go up way better than the WTBs - no need for washing up liquid to help them get seated, though did use a tubeless booster tank thing. Was initially disappointed they're more brown than tan wall, but actually look pretty good on the bike. Measure up @ 39mm, so now have that much needed clearance between tyre and front fork blades. First proper ride on them tomoorow....

Long overdue clean on winter commuter. Discovered dicky front shifts and chain drop was due to loose bolts on front deraileur. Then realised hollowtech BB was gunked up on one side and grinding on the other. Found and fitted new one bought months back but forgotten about. Also found swisstop blocks in the same box so fitted those too. Botched-repaired bar tape to get me through winter. Spin round the block and it now feels and looks like a different bike.
  • Gave MTB a very good clean! And found that the saddle had slipped, hopefully will feel more normal now! Amazing amount of earth that had made its way into the Seat post fixing!
  • Finished building my RT-58 commuter, a project started in April.......

Just in time for the crap weather

The large chain ring on my Dolan (2009 Veloce) was slightly out of true, causing chain rub on the front mech in gear combinations that shouldn't cause chain rub.

So I came up with a plan to take it off, borrow a mate's dial gauge and man handle back into true with an adjustable spanner and a vice.

Not necessary. Loose chain ring bolt. Nipped that up and we're true again.

    Embarrassing.

Failed miserably in getting a good bleed on the MTB's hydraulics (using the Epic Bleed solution) - Wasn't quite concentrating I think.
So swapped everything over that's currently waiting to go back onto the btwin when the frame gets replaced onto the diverge instead and prep it for it's first week of commuting duties.
And damn does having the narrower bars make fitting all the things i've got a PITA.
Intent on Cycling Commuting on a budget, but keep on breaking/crashing/finding nice stuff to buy.

Now to try and get them to fit my Carlton...... longer reach brakes needed, and wider mudguards.

Even though I have had a handwritten note in front of me all weekend saying 'Gear cable' it was only at about 8 pm on Sunday evening that I headed into the garage to replace said rear mech gear cable that had snapped on Thursday morning's commute. I trudged home Thursday evening in one gear and took the train of shame on Friday.

Gear cable was fixed pretty quickly but as I turned the bike over (no bike stand) I realised how totally shagged the botton bracket was. Looser than a loosey goosey. Fortunately I have a full spare parts box and there was a reasonably fresh BB30 sitting in a box marked 'bottom brackets' (yes, plural).

I replaced this, gave the chain a degrease and the frame a bit of a polish and then decided I may as well go the whole hog and re-tape the right hand side of the bars that have had black tape wound around the base, you know, the drop bar end in a total disregard for the rules.

I even found a new set of self-tightening bar end plugs to replace the one original push-fit bar end; the other was missing hence the black tape.

All done now and looking forward to tomorrow's commute although the weather for the rest of the week looks a bit shite.

Fitted new Schwalbe City Jet tyres to my Kona. New Wtb Volt saddle hopefully coming today as the rails on my 20 year old Selle Italia Flite saddle broke on Sat.

Three sets of new pads, one set in the helmet after a wet ride home meant stinging eyes and new pads on the Full Monty as the lever was getting close to the bar when applying the brakes but still stopping me after 3000 miles of riding.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

replaced gear hanger, rear mech, chain and cable, courtesy of the original gear hanger failing....it's also knocked the rear wheel out of true but I have spares, so I can ignore this for now.

Washing machine has decided to stop filling with water. Just makes humming sound. Turns out that it's possible to use a hose in the detergent draw to fill it, but you've got to time it right when it comes round to the rinse cycle.

Took machine apart yesterday, and determined that it's the filler valve that's bust. New one ordered from Amazon for £7.80, which I plan to fit this evening. Amazing what you can get on next day delivery from Amazon prime......

Expected some O'Bree hack, using washing machine bits on a bike, much disappointment! ;)

New drivetrain fitted on Saturday, old one was 6 months/4000 miles old. All went on sweet apart from the 5700 lockring which wouldn't screw into the Hope steel freehub so went back to the old lockring I used previously and the disc calliper needed realigning for some reason, a brief test ride in the rain and gear changes silky smooth though though that might be down to the chain being one link longer than the old one.

Sorry to disappoint with the non bike related content! Fitted the new valve last night, and all is working again. The valve that came from Amazon was a genuine part. Absolute bargain, given that the AEG website quotes £80 for the same part.

Good to know, might try that for a new ignitor for our cooker, Espares and Smeg are comically expensive.

Same when I needed a new thermostat for our cooker. It was about £5 on amazon and about £30 through the manufacturer.

  • Complete bike and drivetrain stripdown and clean last night. Turned into spotting a bit of spongyness on a recently assembled hydraulic ultegra group and then bleeding everything through once again.

A bit surprising and annoying after only just under 1000miles use. Hopefully not a sign of it needing to be done at that interval ongoing.

Broke my front shifter lever last night; fortunately I had a compatible spare lying around, removed from another shifter when building a single-ring CX bike. Turns out that replacing a SRAM shift lever is quite a fiddly job, especially if you want to do it without disconnecting either of the cables...

Sorted out the three pairs of wheels I have for the two bikes. Sorted matching skewers for all the wheels from the spares I had which was OK till I put them into the wheels on bikes and found one of the rears too short so although the nutted ends match the cam ends are two different Shimano profiles.

I noticed a couple loose spokes on my rear Aksium once I got to work, so I tightened them slightly with the multi. It's the first time I've done this so I hope:
    1) I'll make it back home
    2) I haven't untrued the wheel too much
