Had a fettle on the Trek multitrack I've just bought.

Swapped some Randonneurs in for the nasty Cheng-Shins and fitted the rack from the other Trek(which is going to be a single-speed beater). Also gave the drive-train a quick clean and lube.

Oh and put a Charge Spoon saddle on.

Stared at the pack of Jagwire cables in the garage.
    That's it. Stared.
Decided id better return the MTB to road tyres rather than the snow studs first, so did that instead.

Replaced the BB on one bike, chain and cassette on 2 others, replaced the internal routed gear cables on one bike, and the externally routed brake cables on another. Replaced a PF30 press fit BB with a very nicely made PF30 to threaded HT II adaptor, and fitted a 105 crankset, in place of the worn out FSA Gossamer number. I've been busy this weekend.

Replaced front and rear mech cables on the Triban. Good job I did as well, as the rear mech cable was hanging on by a thread, at the Brifter end ( typical of Shimano Brifters ).

Hardcore fettling done in the sun today, fresh bottom bracket, new chain, cassette and rear mech (needed new jockey wheels and thought I'd replace the whole thing for an extra tenner). Running sweet now, put the roadie pedals back on too now the weathers peeking up again.

managed to finally silence the front mech. So nice to not have that grinding sound accompanying constantly. Theres still a definite creaking coming when the cranks are under load though so I need to start investigating

I sorted out the graunchy headset on my Triban 520. The top cup and race was a straight replacement job, very easy with a bit of hammer action and a drift to get it out, and a decent bearing press to put the new one in. The bottom bearing and crown race, however  . The bearing pressed in okay, seeing as though the steerer / head tube on that bike is a straight 1-1/8-1-1/8" with no taper, but the fork crown is slightly flared, so the crown race that came with the new FSA Orbit headset kit, didn't quite fit. I thought about cutting it open and banging it on with a hammer, but decided that wasn't the best idea I'd ever had, so I serviced the original bottom integral cup / bearing / race arrangement, by cleaning and regreasing the bearings, then using it again. It worked a treat, the original top bearing was shot to hell, so I couldn't have saved that, but the bottom assembly was fine with a service.

Gave the chain a good squirt of GT85 and a wipe, lubed it, wiped it again. Measured the chain stretch - new chain and cassette going on next weekend, though fully expected after a winter of road gunge and lack of attention. Pumped up my tyres. It's like a new bike!

Bloody hell, I didn't realise how knackered my BB was, also it turned out my iffy shifting wasn't caused by cheap cables. It was like having a new bike today, glorious silent, wafty, effortless ride to work. Looking forward to the ride home.

LBS swapped out the old fashioned cup and cone BB on my Peugeot for a cartridge BB I had in the parts bin, similarly improved experience on the ride in today.

Perhaps not new bike good, but certainly nice not to have it clicking away.

Isn't it fine to clean them with it, just lube them with proper stuff after?

Have had an annoying headset click in my FXE that only made itself known in the first 15 minutes of a ride and then disappeared. Took the headset apart, cleaned, greased, and in a moment of inspiration chopped off 6mm of steerer (and removed a 5mm spacer underneath the stem). And the click is gone. Was just an indication from the bike that I needed MOAR SLAM (or rather that the steerer was too long).

Bought and fitted a 5700 Crank set to the new bike, and got some cheapo R550 pedals, chucked in for free.

New brake cables in the TT bike. I can now adjust the brakes so that fat carbon rims fit.

Put a new brake cable on the commute London Road on Thursday, as the original was just that little bit too short and put new tape on the bars. Despite two days of riding since I still haven't cut the excess inner cable off yet.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

    Basic clean.
Chains hit close to .75% wear, (it's almost flat,) which of course I checked after cleaning it all up.

Used muc off spray on (in a can) degreaser, amazed at how clean it got it so quickly compared to the bio degreaser & bottle or ultrasound bath method. Still, don't like spray on stuff.

  • Fettling by LBS (Giant store, old Cycleworld store in Thornhill), rather than me, they fitted my On One Fatty Fork that had been sitting around for ~8 months ( ) and a Hope Integral headset. The Wazoo losses another ~900g and more importantly, feels nicer over rough stuff including some of my local quality tarmac!

Fettled by LBS last night, first brake/gear tune since buying the bike 2 months back and straightened the rear hanger after it got blown over in the wind last week. Rode like an absolute dream this morning! A few nice comments from the chaps in store too :D

Schwalbe Pro One onto the Supersix.

Moved the Schwalbe (normal) One to the SuperX.

The latter is quite a lot quicker now.......

I have a self extracting crank, that must have been tourqued up, by a silver back gorilla. It's wedged on and I managed to round the bolt off with a 10mm Allen key, but only actually shifted it by about 1/4 of a turn. I'm going to hacksaw the crank spindle between the crank and the frame to get it off. Then I can get on with fitting the PF30 to outboard threaded cup converter, and fit the Tiagra crankset that I liberated from my new bike, when I upgraded it to a 105 crankset.

Stripped and regreased rear hub. Quite pleased as it was only the third time I've done a hub, took me an hour and now is quiet, rather than sounding like I'm dragging a bag of spanners behind me!

You must be in my neck of the woods. I try to avoid that shop as much as possible. It could be bad for my bank balance if I don't.

Giant bikes certainly aren't cheap, but I do like the looks (but not spec) of the yellow Anyroad they have inside! They did a great deal on the Hope headset and fitting the forks for me, £85 all in. 8)

Day off today, as it's my birthday. Converted my Mercian to retro track specification this morning, in anticipation for taking it on the track at Herne Hill tomorrow. Track bars, temporary front brake (to enable me to get there on the roads), and clips and straps fitted. 17T cog fitted to the other side (front ring is a 54T) - will flip the wheel when I get there.

Slightly concerned about riding with clips and straps through traffic. Haven't done it for years! Hoping that my pull back rather than twist reflexes still work!

Happy Birthday - and a picture of the aged beauty (the bike obviously) gracing HH velodrome would be cool

I swapped the aluminium seat post on the new Triban 560 for the Carbon one off of the Boardman. A subtle change, but it's quite a bit more comfy now.

connected up my front sora mech disc brake and fitted the old old tripe deore mtb groupset with my road superstar arc31 wheelset and an 8 speed cassette, looks ace but mech disc brakes FFS on full lock they still roll.

8 speed chains are MASSHOOF but i do love having an 8 x 3 gearing again.

I ran out of gear outers so i cant complete the rear and even with 180 brake mount my 180 disc is too big, i suspect i need a 200+ post mount.

Any tips for improving the mech disc stopping power?
