Half chromed if the rear triangle is going to stay the same pattern as it is now.

Half term, so I'm 'working from home' today. 'Commute' involved dropping daughter off at gymnastics course at local school. Took the opportunity to take the Mercian for a shakedown run (as my daughter scootered along the pavement). No other cyclists out there for any SCR purposes unfortunately....

Shakedown run revealed that front wheel bearings need adjustment, the rear cog needs replacing, and that from a fit perspective, the stem reach is slightly too long for my flexibility (it's a 115, and I'm after a 105). All minor stuff, and apart from that, we're good to go.

I reckon those seat stays would buckle under my massive @rse. Lovely looking bike though.

Perhaps you're right. If you look closely, the paint isn't wonderful, but it's perfectly serviceable. The main thing that lets it down are the shabby, and incorrect decals. If they can be removed (they're not varnished over, which is half the problem, so will probably come off with a bit of T-Cut), and replaced with the correct ones, then it'll look a whole load better. Even with the decals costing £40 from Mercian, that's still a lot cheaper than a respray. Fitted decals to my Carlton, and that made the world of difference with that.

Don't want to make the mistake of making it 'too nice to use', and worrying about paint chips.

Yeah, new decal's will sort it. Paint is fine unless you want a show bike.

WFH so finally put this together at lunch.

Turns out I only had dinner plate cassettes in the spares box.

Will be on the turbo getting the front sorted now. Plan is to use the blocks to get the height right and then cut the steered when I'm happy.

Jeebus, that looks like a space bike! I like it. Is it for tri-antelope perversions or TTing?

Perversions I'm afraid; I prepare for a bike ride by wearing rubber.

Must say I'm loving the contrast between the bikes pictured on the previous page. I know which I prefer, I'm not keen on bikes with antlers. ;-)
Rhodrich, I agree it doesn't need painting.

Yes - all the shabby decals have now been removed successfully, using a combination of a credit card to scrape away, and T-Cut to remove the residue. Just about to call Mercian to order new correct ones (plus H Lloyd for the correct Reynolds ones). I'll hold off the respray for a good few years....

Wasn't sure what you meant at first but I think you think the stem is as low as it goes.

    Not so.

The stem fits flush with the top tube if you want. I want.

Only sensible, don't want you passing on those triantelope genes

Also, reminds me I probably need to get back in a pool for the first time in 9 months if I'm going to start anteloping again

  • New front mudguard on the mtb. More importantly got a fair bit further with the Roberts road bike I'm sorting for Eroica. New tyres on. Degreased the drivetrain, so looks a lot nicer now. Still need to smarten up the brakes, then start polishing all the chrome up. Should look nice despite the paintwork being a bit battered.

Checked the bike for the return to cycle commuting next week.
Thought Id quickly wiped it down & gt85d it ok to stop it all rusting up before 6 week storage, turned out I'd missed loads. Rust everywhere, bright orange chain and bottom of the cassette.

So stripped down & ultrasonic cleansed the lot.

Of course, had a 'helper', so it took all frigging day, and still not completely clean (forgot to clean rims with brake cleaner after someone 'helped' with gt85...) rather than the 2 hours I'd expected.

Stripped it all down, dipped it all in degreaser, scrubbed it all, rinsed it, wiped it, greased it, put it back together, no bits left over, then mini hopkinb polished it all with baby wipes. Decided new bb, cassette & chain can wait a month. Changed front brake pads, old one braking on the return springs, new one rubs, despite best efforts.

Bike looks super, I expect biblical mudstorms tomorrow.

You've just made me very jealous. How old is your mini?
Mine isnt at school age yet, If i'd managed to get the bits off before help arrived it would have been a lot easier.
Cos of course, anything I did to my bike, had to be done to mini WBs as well. All my tools, degreasers, torque wrench out in minis hands. And their bike is only 3 weeks /4 miles old.... Gah

I wanted to play scalextric this afternoon!

Tightened up the headset on the old steel Peugeot - bit better but now seems to be a bit of play in the stem, so further fettling required.

Replaced chain and front derailleur on the commuter - so far so good, chain is a little slippy in some gears, hopefully it will sort itself out after a few more rides, don't want to have to swap cassette if I can avoid it.

Damn it my brake callipers are sticking but not with the cables disconnected which almost certainly means the cables need changing, I was lazy recently and changed the gears only.

So annoying as I've literally just retaped the bars

Funnily enough last weekend I replaced the rear mech casing and cable on my Dolan, and for some reason what gave me greatest pleasure was re-using the old bar tape (Brooks leather). That tape has now lived with three complete sets of cables.
