After removing and cleaning the cassette last weekend I noticed that the open end of the freehub tube had 2 steps in it, and I thought "hmmmm, those look like cracks". I hadn't noticed any particular symptoms up to then, and I put it in the "aware and monitoring" category. So this week it came as no surprise when I started hearing odd intermittent cracking noises from that area. On looking down, I also noticed a pronounced wobbling or shimmying of the cassette relative to the rest of the wheel. Unfortunately that meant an enforced go-slow for perhaps the best tailwind conditions I've ever experienced, oh well.

So, last night I quickly swapped the cassette, tyres and tube over to my brand new Campag Eurus rear wheel, which I'd been trying to save until Spring. But now I have complete confidence in my drivetrain again \o/ .

You've not been having much luck recently, have you? Worn out front rim, broken derailleur, cracked freehub. Sounds like you need to buy a new bike ;)

New chain & cassette for the Canyon. MTFD to an 11-28 from 11-25.
Decathlon chain whip is excellent. Finished swapping the cassette with the same amount of skin on my knuckles that I'd started with.
Adjusted the lever reach a bit so that I'm not flailing for the brakes when on the drops. And straightened up the left hood after dropping the bike a while ago. Not sure why I hadn't twigged until last week that it might be the reason my left shoulder always started twinging 90 minutes into a ride.

Fitted replacement decals to the Mercian. Not an easy job. Still have to varnish over them to protect them from damage, but it's looking MUCH better now!

brakes off and soaked in wd40 but snapped the adjuster screw whilst trying to unseize, duhhhhhh

the ride home yesterday with a snapped spoke has eaten a groove through one brake pad, I going to try and replace the spoke myself

what could possibly go wrong :|

New cassette and it's still jumping, anyone got a good derailer index video?
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Cleaned what felt like an entire clay pit from the kaff after a weeks wet disused railway commuting, Completely stripped back the bike, cleaned and degreased everything and lubed and put pack together.

Will be doing it again this week as its already filthy after the 8 miles in to work this morning. Might just stick to the cars and the road when there has been any significant rainfall.

I didn't do it, but got the Italian thread of my new Merlin/Merckx AXM frameset cleaned, so I can fit the Bottom Bracket and get on with the build.

Not many shops out there have spent the money on tools for Italian BBs, so thanks go to Addiktion in St Albans who did!

It's not that bad actually. That front mech had done 25,000 miles, I estimate about 14,000 actuations, it was a fatigue crack, it had had a good run. As for the wheels, whether it's a worn-through rim or the cassette-holder getting cracked, it's been a deliberate policy of "using up" my old still-usable wheels, of which I had loads, while it's still winter. So I'm seeing the retirement of these components as a good thing, clearing space in my shed. But I am building up a good stock of still-usable hubs.

Very, very nice Mercian, by the way.

Put new tyres and tubes on the BSA (old ones completely perished) and swapped over pedals and a saddle, as well as cleaning the tar-like residue of oil and dirt off everything. More or less rideable now, so just need to see if I can remember how to use non-indexed DT shifters. :|

Fed up with scraping and poor performance from the roadies rim brakes, took the pads off to clean them at lunch time, assuming it was just winter road grit in the way.
Nope, had worn them flat on rear, and had could just see the indicators on the fronts. Whoops.
    New ones now due tomorrow.

DT shifters absolutely fine. Like riding a, um... General set up of everything else was all wrong and very uncomfortable to ride. Needs a couple of hours fiddling to get the saddle and bar position right, plus the front wheel has a 5mm wobble which makes braking a little episodic.

Bought and fitted some replacement brake pads from Uber Components - really good feel already, wide selection, and seriously cheap.

just swapped over freehub bodies on the superstar ultra rear wheel, easy to remove and fit but when i tightened the 5mm axle ends the hub body wont spin freely, now i assumed that as i needed to give it a twist to remove it should be done back up tight, however if i tighten it anymore than finger tight it binds.

    what gives?

thin washer/shim for the bearing inner race missing? ie freehub body not clear enough of the hub outer to allow the freehub inner ring to bind to the bearing inner race. apols if grandmother, eggs etc or if that's toal gobbledegook

Cleaned bike & fitted GXP brakepads.
Fitting brakepads highlghted that both wheels are quite out of true.
Had a go at fixing it, didn't work, to the shop tomorrow i think.

    where to start ...?
cleaned two bikes and the mancave which was super dusty
then changed brakes on the rear of my ribble sportive, now with salmon koolstops and a new tension adjuster
puncture on a spare wheel from yet another failed split value base different wheels each time ????
made a MTB from my spares
removed the crown spacer from one set of forks to fit a better fitting new one
changed pedals look to spd on MTB
moved everything around in the mancave to make more room and fit said new MTB
    added more wheelset hanging hooks
and a load more stuff .............

Finally fitted the roadracer Mk2's to my wet bike on Saturday in advance of the Sunday club run - I think they've been sat in the garage about 3 years.

Anyway, after an hour of rain, glorious sunshine emerged, so you can all thank me for that.

For those of us with a two bike commute with a train journey in the middle, finally resolved my rattling D-lock with some home made O rings cut from a dead inner tube. A small fettle but my word what a difference, it feels like a new bike!

Dismantled my old front wheel, following the badger crash last week. On releasing the spoke tension, the old rim has returned to its taco shape, and is only fit for the bin :(

Nothing wrong with the hub and spokes though, so I may well rebuild in time, although I'll probably wait until after the next Ripley Cycle Jumble on April 29th, as nice vintage wheelsets can often be picked up there for less than the price of a new rim.

Cut two fork steerers. Never done it before - a little apprehensive but no problem albeit seemed to be mm or two shorter than expected. Was supposed to be doing three but turns out one is carbon so ordering another blade for that.
