Transfered the groupset from the dead Madone to the Ribble winter frame. It all fitted np probs, the gears worked first time, and nothing fell off on the club run this morning

Re-fitted my wheels and seatpost after bunging the bike in the back of the car rather than ride it through Friday's weather.

    Greased my seatpost, and self.

Failed miserably to remove my pedals, got annoyed and felt glad to live 50 yds from the LBS.
    Rules are for fools.
  • Removed the layer of mud that made my bike look like it had been pebbledashed.
Cleaned the drivetrain and tuned up the gears.

For the first time in over a month my bike is no longer like my forum name. :)

OK, I faced my fear head-on. Today, I fettled.

One or two chain links had spots of rust after the recent deluges so it got a damn good soaking with WD40. Then I replaced one of its links with a powerlink for easier maintenance, it took all of five minutes (including finding my chain tool) so why it's taken a year to get round to it I don't know. Then the rest of the bike got a clean with the superbly-named Fuchs-Off.

Took all afternoon, my back's killing me (getting old), my fingers are cut to pieces, but the bike is nice and shiny :D

And the rear hub is making a funny rubbing sound that it wasn't doing before and the brakes are squealing like a pig :?

Finally got around to stripping the BB off the Pearson. Replacement ordered from wiggle, my first order in a couple of months

Currently fettling the gears on my scott, the lowest gears of which are jumping again :x

So, first ride post-fettling. Brakes and/or their cables in dire need of oiling (forgot to do them). Quite surprised how much more effective the brakes are post-cleaning, nearly locked the wheels up a couple of times. Gears need a bit of fine-tuning. Hubs still need looking at.

When i'll actually do all this secondary fettling, god knows... :P
  • My fixie needs hardly any fettlnig on a day to day basis. So here's a summary of the last couple of months - fitted dual pivot callipers front and back, which meant I had to drill out the hole for them to fit, but since then they've been great; readjusted the mudguards to stop it rubbing every time I applied the front brake; replaced one side of bar tape (and now I've lost the other roll so I have mismatched tape GRRRR) ; fitted an IQ Cyo which is great and generally cleaned, polished and given it lurve.

Put the Rido saddle on the world's slowest singlespeed conversion(TM), feels okay just sitting on it, but I'll reserve judgement until I ride it - about 2011at this rate

Re-taped one side of my bars last night. Wearing thin on the the drops but won't replace till the winter ends, keeping the Deda tape till the summer.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

  • New chain fitted, never done that before. Managed to knack the cheapie chain tool I bought from ASDA though, had to buy a decent one from a LBS.

While I was in there I got some wax lube too, try to stop the sand from building up on my new chain as much.

    Sorted. Yay, me

Tomorrow, if I can spy a gap in the predicted downpours, I'll be test-riding the Pearson prior to pimping it with a new saddle, brake levers and tape... Now, shall I go SS or fixed?

Sorry to hijack but I was thinking of flipping my wheel for the London leg, after all i'm already slow and London is as flat as a pancake

I flipped the stem on my Defy to raise the bars a little and see if that helps my back pain.

No chance of a test ride tonight so i'll see how it is on the road tomorrow. Fingers crossed it's not worse! :?

Well, I just degreased, cleaned and lubed my chain and jockey wheels.

They were totally gummed up with grit and gunk.

    Took me over an hour.

The sad thing is I only did this like two weeks ago (and it's a brand new chain).

Here come's winter riding I guess.

Well it's certainly not worse, but don't think it's solved it completely. However, getting into the drops is MUCH easier and with the headwind home today that was much appreciated!

Had a very annoying repetitive creak from the left crank on the nice bike all week. After gradually changing bottom brackets, chainsets and pedals, I think I've narrowed it down to the "pin thing" on the left crank not sitting properly in the hole in the middle of the thread of the spindle.

Okayyy, both my ChainReaction (grease & grease gun) and Wiggle (Koolstop Salmon) parcels arrived this morning, so today was a day of fettling.

Set about fitting the Koolstops. It went a lot more straightforward than I expected - it normally takes forever for me to set up the pads on my cantilevers. But this time I also set about sorting out the spring tension in each brake arm. They've been off-centre for ages. So I unhooked the cable, set the spring position and tension the same on both, tested them individually and the tension felt exactly the same on each one. Re-connected the cable, and they're even more skew-wiff than before. Sod that. They're back to the old slight off-centre setup. It works.

Then I set about the hubs. Had the bike for over 2 years and never inspected the hubs. After cleaning the bike last weekend I noticed the axles felt a bit "gritty" and there were spots of rust on the outside of the cones and locknuts. I was scared of what I'd find .... hubs full of rust, new wheels on the way? No - inside they were nice and clean and shiny, and surprisingly still full of grease. Cleaned it all out anyway and put fresh grease in, put it all back together. Back wheel is still making the same rubbing sound so maybe it's the freehub at fault.

Which begs the question - how often do hubs need servicing? It's fair to say I neglect my bike, I don't look after it as much as I should, but I was surprised they were in such good condition.

Just fitted my Minoura SG1 to the rear of my bike but had to cannabalise it with the one from the front of the bike. Got to put the Swissstop Greens on in the morning.

  • New chain and cassette. I might have been able to get away with just a chain.

Either way, 2 chains and one cassette in 10 months and about 4500 miles isn't toooo bad from a 10spd that doesn't get as much care as it should.

    New gear cable, adjusted brakes.

After noticing a little play in the cranks on my Scott CR1 I thought a new BB was in order. Unfortunately upon attempting to remove said BB the metal sheaths/cups which allow the BB to pass through the frame came away. I have since been informed that this is a frame warranty issue (which may or may not be covered by the lifetime warranty!!).

Tomorrow is D-Day. I have contacted a shop in Hertford who are prepared to take up any warranty issues once they have seen the bike. Very depressed.....

(On another note - amused by the post earlier stating London as being pancake flat. My regular 90 minute loop around Highgate area has a nice 2500ft of climbing)
