Then build up a new rat bike.

Fitted front and rear mech and got my commute all tuned up on Saturday. First time for me and it felt good. Gear changes are silky smooth at the moment (untill the new gear cables stretch of course!)

Just spent the last hour fitting mudguards to the commute too. Managed to lose the fitting screws somehow, so had to dig out some. Had issues mounting the front guard around my disc caliper but got it on :)

Looks like I'm just in time for the judging by the fact that I can hear rain lashing against my window...

Removed the stuck bb shell, using a headset press to hold the tool, an 18" adjustable spanner and a huge rubber mallet.

Removed external BB crankset from inbred, fitted it to pompino, removed cartridge bb from pompino along with cranks and fitted to new rat bike frame. Fitted new ring to pompino cranks.

Then completely assembled a new rat bike, including bodging a tensioner for 1/8" chain out of an old 8spd mech!

Ordered some new disc pads from Wiggle but no sign of them today so I guessing they will be lost in tidal wave of backlogged mail.

So found a LBS that had them in stock and fitted within 5 mins. Result!

They were no more expensive than online. When the others arrive I'll put them on the front.

Didn't replace the pads last night, just went round the rim with some scotchbrite but had to do the pads tonight as I had some metal embedded in the pads. Bit early to replace them tbh.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

I usually just dig the aluminium flakes out with a knife - seems to work OK...

In reference to my earlier post, I found the spare chainring bolt; it had bounced and landed in my toolbox. Just as well really, as I knackered one of the bolts doing them up and sheared the threaded part from the allen head. I wasn't being heavy with it (honest, using a 6" socket wrench) and ping! Now quite wary of the other four as I thought chromoly was meant to be strong.

Faffed around for too long trying to fit some shims and a replacement seatpost on a Trikidoo. Not happy.

Fitted my Michelin Mud 2s for tomorrow's race, tightened up the left crank arm (had come loose!), tuned the rear gears, and about to spending a lot of time fitting the front mech and front mech cable in the kitchen becauses Mrs CJ is out. The kitchen becomes a workshop once again.

  • Indeed, the shoes are so totally different to the old ones i can't begin to make a guess on where they need to go. But went with best guess and see how it goes. Might make it to RP for some laps tomorrow on day off and see how that goes.

Argh! How can I stop my cones coming loose, I took the bike for a shakedown ride before tomorrows commute and it's come loose after about 2 miles. I'm having to tighten the rear cones up at least once a week now. Harumph!

Just covered my pedal crank arms in scotchlite reflective tape. Have spd pedals, so techniclly illegal at night, so thought the tape would show up nicely the movement of the pedals. Also managed a wee smideon of tape on the pedals themselvess, dont know it it will stay on long, but see what happens.

Got the bike to the outside of the flat door and remember the front tyre was softer than it should so was about to get the mini-pump off the downtube and pump it back up when I realised I was 6' from my track pump  Refitted the tailpiece to my crud road guards, noticed I lost it when I stopped at a set of lights this morning which annoyed me a little but knew I had a spare at home. got home tonight with the intention of doing so but stood on something when walking the bike to it's home and found the nut, more searching found the bolt and the lost piece of mudguard was on the floor where the bike lives. :D

    Fettling scares me.

Every time I degrease the chain/gears they go out of sync. Last time I somehow got the gear cable tangled and bent inside the STI.

Every time I inspect and clean the brake pads they go out of true with the wheel.

Every time I try to tweak and fine tune my saddle/pedals/cleats my ankles and knees have a hissy fit.

I need to give it something of an overhaul, but whenever the weather's good enough to get out in the back yard to do it, I'd rather go out for a ride instead!

Noticed the smallest couple of sprockets on the cassette are allowing the chain to slip last night. Only fitted the cassette a few weeks back but it was bought cheaply second hand so no great loss. New cassette ordered, will fit when it arrives.

Ultimate fettling? Just built the bike up from totally bare frame including a little 'retouching' here and there such as making spacers for the 1x front and also fettling the cranks where they fouled the BB rings.

  • Putting the mudguards on the bike permanently tonight - well, for the rest of winter anyway.
Also going to give the moving bits some oil to try and offset the damage caused by the poor thing being left under the open sky at the station every night.
At some point soon I must take it home and spend a few hours cleaning thoroughly and use some grease to properly protect it. Maybe this weekend...

I'm am "looking forward" to a good deal of fettling this evening
    1. replace a rear wheel (rim split!) - meaning that I have to fit a new SS sprocket on the cassette body, fit rim tape, new tube, swap tyre over
    2. while I'm at it, change the chain ring and chain
    3. fit new brake blocks
    4. fit new grips

I'll be dirty and swearing before the night is done...

  • I will mostly be building my new bmc race master- moving everything from my old bmc road racer to the new frame apart from chainset, bb and headset. I then have to rebuild the road racer using old ropey parts so I can commute on it. Im going to be very busy tonight I think

So, I managed to get everything done last night. Of course it all took longer than I thought with plenty of two steps forward one step back. Just as I was ready to get on the bike and ride to the station to come home, the rear wheel jammed. I thought the brake blocks needed tweaking but no. Turns out that when the rim blew out it weakened the join between the tyre bead and the tyre. THe two had now seperated and the tyre had come of the wheel. So a new tyre. Which I do have. But at home.

    ON the fookin tube again...

Lubed my chain this afternnoon and fitted new brakeblocks on my bikes. On a friends daughters' BSO I've diagnosed that the BMX BB was loose and needed tightening up but will put new bearings and some grease.

Change the chains on Mrs itboffin hybrid and my tourer just because the old ones were grubby then emptied the garage come workshop, swept and cleaned the whole place, replaced the foam padding on my cycle carrier.
