Changed the wheels / tyres on the hybrid and fitted a 9 speed cassette.

Brake cables arrived today but I'm still awaiting a BB cable guide before I can connect the rear mech.

More assembly of new bike. Cut the fork steerer tube down, trialled a few stems before deciding on 3t alloy one for now. Installed handlebar.
Fitted new Shimano BB, and some very nice shiny new XT cranks, 2x10.
Pedals fitted just to see what they look like.

Wheels arrive tomorrow with luck. Yay!

Swapped red Keo Sprints on the Pug for red Keo Classics. After 5 years across various bikes the front lip was so worn that I could move the cleat in the pedal. Increasing the spring tension may improve things but I didn't fancy another day if riding to work feeling like my left crank arm is falling off.

    You're very sweet!

I do get down to Defra at Smith Square a few times a year and it would be nice to catch up with some folk at the Morpeth. Don't think I've seen any of the That London commuters since the Summer get together during the Olympics :(

A new pair of Swissstop Greens on the back wheel, could have got a few more miles out of them but I left the last set too long and were 0.6mm thick in places
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Mounted brakes, derailleurs on the CAAD, and separately mounted STi levers, routed cables and wrapped bars for same.

The lend of a headset press tomorrow, to take out the BB sleeve and mount bb30 bearings, a quick couple of snips with some decent cable cutters, collect and sort wheels, and I'll be in business.

Weight should be around 7.5-7.6. Not bad for the cost, really.

Fitted Planet X Frog Bollox cantis to the hybrid. This involved lots of swearing and took a lot longer than planned. It tested them out as it was damp yesterday and immediately bought some v brakes on eBay.

Why would you voluntarily fit cantis to a bike you intend to ride?

Stripped the wheels down to get them ready for the LBS to rebuild. It's amazing how fast I can get the cassette and disc off the rear wheel nowadays....

Especially if it has flat bars so V brakes are not an issue.

Because I already had them. They has been in a box for three years whilst I got round to doing something with the hybrid frame.

  • Since I'd received my new cable-puller, I thought I'd have a go at the front mech of the CR1 - it's never been quite right if I'm honest.

Done and perfect in roughly 20 seconds. Why have I never bought a cable-puller before?? WHY?!?

Operation "Save My Unloved Tricross" (SMUT) started last night.

Things did not look good, there were growths on places things should not grow, the frame colour was uncertain, things that are meant to move don't and things that aren't, do.

I had considered performing the last rites and consigning the old girl to the great scrapheap in the sky but watching too many zombie and vampire films made me realise I could create an undead bike (non-sparkly) nosferatu stylee...

Bike on the stand, wheels not spinning; brakes seized; bottom bracket... well.... green; chain fluffy, rear mech also seized (and fluffy) front mech partly seized, bottom bracket shell eating the cables, wheels with at least one broken spoke (sob), cassette is black (which I guess is better than green), triple chainset looks like a road surface (black, covered in tar, mud and full of potholes)

I look over at the 2 x 5l tubs of muc off cleaner and wonder if it will be enough...

So everything removed from the dead bike...

Wheels off, count broken spokes (sob) lean them outside, wet them and spray with muc off
Chain off, not sure what to do with this... it's VERY greasy so should just need a thorough clean
Chainset and pedal off, likewise leant outside soaked and covered in muc off.
BB out and mowed, sorry... cleaned. Turns out to be in remarkably good condition. I suspect vampirism and soak in holy water. Did not melt and scream so use degreaser instead and it comes up sparkly. F*ck, I have a twilight BB.... Put to one side and think about using the spare BB anyway.

Spend 2 hours with the hose and muc off on the bike when encroaching darkness stops my fun and I move everything back inside to start again tomorrow.

I'm not saying the bike was bad, but there was an oily sheen on the drive afterwards.

    More SMUT later.

At the weekend: recabled the posh bike with jagwire ripcord, re wrapped handle bars, changed pads for swisstop blue. Feels like a new bike!
What do you mean you think 64cm is a big frame?

when the wheels were off I noticed that the front brake blocks were pretty much non existent

    So they were replaced
