So what changes have you made to the bike, Speed_King - and how much did each 'upgrade' cost you?
I love the little additions like the red chainring bolts - and those bars look rather excellent, too.0 -
Speed_King wrote:I had black bar tape to begin with look at my first pics, but i like change and the colours all match so it looks ok!
I can see the appeal of a white saddle evans do the toupe in white with red trim maybe i will give tht a try? and i may change the cages for a pair of look carbon ones but the chainbolts and jockey wheels stay it is a trademark of mine and i get them free from my supplier as i am advertising them.
How much yours set you back? looks very nice, and are those mavic kysrium wheels on the top pic?
Yes, they are Kysrium ES wheels, I wanted something light that didn't cost silly money. And I've ridden bits of Paris Roubaix on them, so they are pretty stong too!
The Zipps in the 2nd photo must be over 10 years old now. I bought them when I used to do time trialing, but they will take a 10s cassette, so I reckon I'll hang onto them for a bit.
The total build was about £2,700. Got it built up to my spec rather than as a complete bike. Very happy with it, had it for nearly 3 years now and I can't see any need in replacing it!
I reckon you should get a white toupe with black trim, I think you have enough red on your bike anyway.
And here's a more up to date photo of mine, I've changed the pedals from Ultegra to Time and I now don't use a computer...
(Maybe this thread should be retitled "Please post photos of your Spesh").0 -
greasedscotsman wrote:I would go for a white saddle, but black bar tape, as below...
And I would change the red chainring bolts, skewers and bottle cages, black ones would look soooo much better IMO.
(And I will try and take some better photos Mr. NapD, the reflections off the wheel stickers do look a bit silly, no way I can achieve OCP membership with these photos...)
Pics look fine to me!
Here's my black and red Special but not Ized with the new wheels...

I'm liking the wheels, why did you go for different wheels front and back? Is the 808 a bit difficult to handle upfront? Do they make an 808 front?
And shouldn't you be watching Film 4 right now?0 -
It's the classic '606' combo...
They do an 808 front but it's a good trade off having the 404 front as it's lighter and better hanling in the crosswinds but still pretty aero.
I'm at work0 -
Hey nap D I love those wheels i am thinking of getting a pair of Fulcrum zeros or EC90's? Havent decided yet as to which set i prefere i have been fortunate enough to have a FABS (Far Away BIke Shop) let me try them both out on my bike and i got to admit they both feel the same although i think the zero's edge it on looks and more importantly weight. brought myself a new pair of the continental 4000s (black Chilli) tyres today, bloody marvelous!! grip like a mini on glue, Ps: Nap D do those cages hold the bottles well i got a pair of sis bottles and might buy a pair if they hold ok?
Nice rides chaps must have more money than me and a lot less sense lol lol lol (at the moment anyway!)G.H.Allum0 -

FULCRUM Zeros - a MUST have purchase for that bike of yours - said it before, say it again!
and your earlier question - I just like white saddle / bar tape combinations on bikes, thats all.0 -
PS Nap D Are those double tap from SRAM i am seeing under your hoods?G.H.Allum0
-
What do you guys think of the EC90's are they good thoughG.H.Allum0

Caligari uk. The chainring bolts and jockey wheels cost a total of £60 and come from a firm called clee cycles there are loads to choose from. The specialized handlebar/stem combo is called the S-Works Barmac Wedge and cost £249 from any autherised dealer, and the cages you can get anywhere in White, Black, Red, Silver and Carbon ones, i got mine from Evans cycles at £8 eachI already had the spd m540s but they are around £40ish. and the Q/R Levers for the wheels were about £30 from a LBS but you can buy them from CLee cycles also.and so far that is it!G.H.Allum0

I use SiS bottles and the cages hold them very well.
It's a full SRAM Red groupset
In terms of wheels I'd personally get some Shimano Dura Ace WH 7850 C24 CL, I had some before selling them to get the Zipps.
They were absolutely excellent- light, stiff and very very smooth riding and would look perfect- black carbon, white writing and red anodized nipples...
Probably get them for cheaper than the Fulcrums too.0 -

Shame, you missed your favourite film!
Speed King,
Doesn't your wheel choice depend on what sort of riding you do? Aren't the Eastons EC90's a deep rim, maybe better for time trialing or maybe road racing? Where as the Zeros or Dura Ace's better for sportives?
And isn't the obvious answer to get both!0 -

I didn't know Ron Jeremy was in the award winning British television prison drama series?0 -

Okay - cool - thanks for the help. Don't worry - I'm not going to steal your bike's look - but I may add one or two of my own bits of 'bling' (I used to spend far too much on pimping up my old Redline BMX).
I see you're already looking to upgrade your wheels on the Tarmac Elite. Are the wheels that come fitted pretty cruddy?0 -

The 1980 Ron Jeremy vehicle is the original and best, much better than the Jodie Foster western effort and far more entertaining than a gritty drama.0 -
Loving the FSA bling NapD.....Must go faster.0

No Caligari UK the Mavics tha come with the bike are fine until you want to upgrade them. They go with the bike perfectly mate, i just want something lighter and better.
GreatScotsman well then i have a problem hence why i asked on opinions on both? I do a bit of track pursuit and therefore i do a fair few miles of time trials as well, i do like the zero's but still dont know if the price is justified where as the areo's seem to be or is it me? I was looking at the dura-ace wheels actually Napolean D, but a couple down from that dont want to pay out loads for both sets of wheels, i dont mind paying out for the areo rims or maybe even a set of hed ones? the fulcrum zero wheels look like they are quite robust and durable.
How much where those wheels btw Naplolean D?G.H.Allum0 -
areo rim? Is that to cycling what oreo is to cookies?
The list price for the wheels was a lot...0 -
How much was a lot mate? and when did you buy them ( gives me an idea of the price change to now a little bit).
Am on the lookout for some particular black tape out of curiosity really, it looks smooth almost velvity, and has tiny white circles on it so when wrapped around the bars you can see them on each turnG.H.Allum0 -
I got them brand new last week. I'm sure you can use google!
No idea about the tape.0 -
Sorry mate it is obvious you dont wish to disclose the price i understand lol i will google and find themG.H.Allum0

Have decided on a pair of fulcrum 5's as my budget isnt going to allow for anything dearer this side of Xmas lol, Does anyone in here know a comaprison for these rims, as i have had a few in the past from campag, shimano and mavic, got the not so lovely mavic cpx 22's atm ..? All help would be useful taG.H.Allum0
-
There's nowt wrong with Mavic CXP22s!!
As good as most factory built stuff out there, probably as good as if not better that the ones on the Fulcrum 5s.
How about getting new hubs and some Sapim CX-Ray spokes and use your existing rims?0 -
would that not be equally as pricey as a new set mate? inc the rebuld and labourG.H.Allum0
-
No, and far better quality if you use a good wheelbuilder.0
-
I would stick with the wheels you have, save up and get something you really want in the spring. Not much point in upgrading to something that is more or less the same thing. And winter is coming anyway, if you have a hack bike your not going to be using the Spesh much or if you are going to ride it through the winter, why mess up a new pair of wheels?0
-
I took your advice NapoleanD and stuck with my rims for now but am looking into upgrading the spokes and poss hub also, gonna try dave hinde or maybe terry dolan to see what sort of price i am looking into. I took my cpx22's out for a spin today in their new GP4000s skins and my word they stick on the corners like a fly on s**t !!
Bloody good tyres and worth the £65 i paid for them!G.H.Allum0 -

Erm.....
I said good wheelbuilder!
Whereabouts are you? I'm sure someone can recommend a good one near you.0
