    tsk, inexperienced riders, how awfull.
Spose you were all born awsome?

yep have to agree with you there
there are are a lot of opinionated bikers on this fourm with high end bikes
and i dont see any european or world championship medals :?

so where is the justification of getting a four grand road bike just to use in the summer and at weekends .?

some folks cant afford high end bikes . so while you smirk at other cyclists just remember YOU dont have the lungs of armstrong.

as a famous person once said
"it is easy to critise and break down the spirit of others but to know yourself takes a lifetime"

I'm sorry but that's a ridiculous statement. No one has to justify their choice of bike to anyone. High end bikes are not just designed for Pro's they're designed to be sold to those that want them, regardless of talent/ability. You don't have to be Federer to use a Wilson K Factor KSix-One Tour 90 Racquet, or Tiger Woods to use a Nike SasQuatch Sumo. FWIW I don't sneer at people on cheap bikes (although I feel sorry for peeps on ARGOS BSO's :D ) I'm happy to see people riding but I will give newbies a bit of a wide berth (for safety's sake). If you look back over this forum you'll find nothing but support and helpful advice for new commuters, the old C+ forum was of great help to me when I started.

I think you might have be misinterpreting the general tone of this forum btw.

I missed this - so am I Soul Boy - and I'm not sure why it doesn't happen but think it may have soemthing to do with pre-paid passes - throwing open the gates would not make a huge amount of difference in terms of income.

So hang on... Your finely-tuned spider sense begins to detect safety concerns at the mere mention of workers not getting a pay rise yet you can't see anything unsafe about throwing open the barriers to everyone in the rush hour and having a free-for-all?

Mmm, I'm sure most of us here aren't against unions per se, but as Greg points out there is a real whiff of the 1970's about Crow and the RMT, and it is their timing which has really annoyed people this time round.

+1. Unions on the whole may be a good thing but that doesn't excuse what many people perceive to be an abuse of their position to make unreasonable demands. Nobody's arguing that workers shouldn't have some means of safeguarding/exercising their rights, but that doesn't extend to public services being run as a benefits systems for their workers (which I appreciate is just one interpretation of what's going on).

I think this strike is also too soon after the Royal Mail messing about which also didn't find much sympathy IIRC.

+1 for JashBurnham RE : High End Road Bikes.

I have 2 x bikes an Airnimal (as I had to have a folding bike as I live 40+ miles from London & need to use the train) and a £1.5k MTB that I have ridden over 2000 miles on -VFM I think.

Airnimal was bought on BTW Scheme and saves me £100 tube fares, likewise a lot of people have chosen to fund bikes in a similar manner. Instead of paying for over priced unreliable public transport they have made an informed choice. It doesn't take long to work out 40% off BTW x 100 x ?? = a very nice road bike :)

Having been made redundant recently I've had enough time to read through all 11 pages this morning!! Some very interesting comments.

The one thing that bothers me about public transport, including the tube is how much it costs. The Government is apparently trying to cut the subsidies it provides on rail travel to make it "fairer to the tax payer", despite it already being the most expensive in Europe. If it is cheaper for someone to drive to work in a private car than to do the same journey packed into a carriage barely able to move due to overcrowding, surely something is seriously wrong? Should we just tarmac over the tracks and open them to private cars (then turn the train stations into car parks)?

Regarding the whole debate about Government spending and redundancies, the fact is that whoever is in charge of the country the next 4-5 years is going to have to cut public spending. Presumably that will be the Tories and no doubt Labour will be spouting off about them being "typical Tories" making cuts, but this time there is no choice. The spending defecit is simply too much. Even Labour would have to make cuts should they stay in power. My hope is that they don't just try to retain spending increases on things like the NHS (a doctor friend of mine is constantly telling me how much money is wasted in the NHS) at the expense of everything else. Our infrastructure has been badly neglected and we all suffer as a result.
  • My lass said that she was in Brixton the 1st day of the Tube strike and some bloke RLJed when a woman with a pram was crossing. He was in no danger of hitting her.

However loads of other cyclists had stopped and one bloke went nuts. Shouted after him. The RLJ stopped and they had a massive row. This almost came to blows at the next set of lights and a 3rd cyclist had to intervene to calm it down.

Some of the light jumping I’ve seen this week has been unreal. Gormless lasses on shoppers in floaty skirts are the worst for it. Easier on the eye though.
