Here's the difficulty, I hadn't really envisaged a week, more like a long weekend - say 4/5 days (I imagine this would suit more people as well?). However I imagine finding somewhere that will rent for an odd period of time may be tricky... I'll do some research over the next few days but keep the ideas coming folks.

Location wise I'm happy with the lakes or the beacons. I've ridden the Black Mountains before and Gospel pass is wonderful. I suppose Wales would be my first choice simply as it's closer, and August looks good.

Wales would suit me more as I can combine it with a trip to see the family and would have babysitting on hand, so it takes pressure off the good lady. However, I'd probably stay at my mother's place near Cardiff rather than with you 'orrible lot (so I can see the kids etc  ) and I'd drive up to wherever you're staying.

So, best you don't include me in your booking plans. :)

though i live in london (ish) i was born in abergavenny and my folks still live there so assuming i'm around that time i'd be happy to show the areas i know and some of the less touristy bits as well. abergavenny is also very easy to get to from london being paddington/newport/abergavenny.

    Yeah, although I'd definitely be up for a long weekend - a 4-dayer perhaps - I couldn't do a week.

    Not enough holiday, you see!

My concerns are around ability. I don't want to hold anyone back by having to wait for me. Obivously if more people go then its possible ability groups would form (one slow and one fast)

Would prefer to do 4 days I'm hoping for a Fri-Sat-Sun-Mon combo.

Jash let me know the when, where and how much and I'll let you know if I can.

DDD, worry ye not. On trips like this everyone is just generally happy to be riding. It's not training. Waiting at a cafe to regroup is good too :)

Yep 4 day weekend Fri - Mon sounds ideal really.

I've had a little look on this site this am. There's a range of options and they only appear to offer a week or 3 days. £ day prices range from £400 to 900 so could be quite reasonable depending on numbers. I reckon if we get 6/7 of us we could be looking at £100 each perhaps less, not bad.

A 4 day weekend (Fri - Mon) suits me down to the ground, and the cheaper the better.

As a bit of a curve ball, I've got access to my parents place in Dunwich when it isn't let. It sleeps 8, and you could definately get about a dozen or more if you used all the floor space. My preference would be the Lakes or Beacons for truly great riding, but if you get stuck for a place to stay let me know (plus it's free of course).

Sounds great Rich, ok so it's not the beacons/lakes but it would be handy. What's avail like in August?

I'll have to double check, if there's enough interest I'll find out today and report back. There's also a very nice pub just up the road that does B&B, and good beer :lol: if numbers get too high

I should also qualify that the accomodation is over 4 bedrooms, iirc two doubles and two twins. Top and tail anyone   and there's enough floor space in the double rooms for at least another two people on the floor.

Would definitely be interested - sure, it's like 45 minutes from my place in Essex, but riding in a group is fun!

If you guys do go to the Beacons, I heartily recommend this place to stay:

    http://www.canal-barn.co.uk/

My friends and I stayed there at New Year, and apart from a slightly overinterested host, is a great place to stay (sleeps 24 I think) and has the drying room and storage space (lockable garagey thing) for plenty of bikes and kit. Is v close to essential amenities (pubs obviously) and also on edge of 'town' for easy access to countrified roads for cycling fun.

Won't be able to make it this year as I will be stuck indoors writing a literary masterpiece* but perhaps if successful it could be an annual thing?

Certainly were some nice lanes around there and very peaceful. Mind you we were there at 7am on the Dunwich Dynamo so maybe they do get busier. :? For a mixed group I reckon you would all be able to stay together more easily in Suffolk, where as in the big hills huge gaps appear very quickly on the ascents and descents.

edit: I know that no one gets left behind but if you are one of the tail enders it can get a bit demoralising seeing everyone disappear over the horizon all the time.

    +1.

No-one gets left behind and you wait at the top of the climbs.

Good point, but then I live for the hills, climbing and descending are what it's all about

Why don't we have two trips, do the Lakes or Beacons in the summer, and Suffolk over a half term some time so the teachers amongst us can still attend. It would be easier to get the house in Dunwich out of season, and after all the cost would be absolutely minimal ie food and booze only :lol:

Not everyone is as sick as us

btw Mid Wales has some great roads and of course the Bwllch. I would love to cycle around there sometime. Shame my Honeymoon is going to get in the way this year

All this talk about living for hills kinda smacks of TotalNewbie's point and tells me that this may turn out as a race enthusiast trip and not a Commuter/social ride trip....

I may decline. Marlborough loop (although that storm did play a huge part in my confidence levels during the ride, as did the cramp, bruised knee from night before and falling off) was my limit.

All I ask is that when its arranged, be honest about the difficulty and take into consideration that not ever is of the same ability (which I trust Jash and others will).

Like the Greg, Jash, Jon and Chris's ride up Boxhill, no way (right now, maybe next year) would I do that with them...

    I want my Kuota....

Ultimately the aim is for it to be a social trip. I think what we need is a list of names and what you'd want from the trip, then we can move forward!

DDD, there's no problem with ability, those that get to the top of any hill first wait for the group, it's basic club run etiquette. As is always riding at the pace of the slowest rider so that no-one gets left behind.

I don't see any problem with having a couple of rides with everyone as part of a group, and a couple where we split into fast and slow, that way everyone is happy. As has been said this is a social thing, not a training camp.

DDD if i attend I can assure you that there is no way on Gods green Earth you'll be watching me disappear over a hill.

    Unless:

    I'm driving.

    You're dead.

Really; my climbing ability is right up there with my ability to give birth and talent for making people laugh.

Yep, like women shopping for clothes, we lost track of time! :D

DDD - the reality is that everyone has their own pace going uphill and even club runs can splinter when the road goes up. But, as Rich said, everyone re-groups at the top. So you needn't worry at all. :)
