I must plead ignorance when it comes to English and or British and their uses. Please give me a brief lesson, so to speak. Really!

  • I don't agree with Dennis' and Arkibal's LA defence of "don't knock him because you don't know him".

He is a person who has not only been thrust into the limelight because of his sporting excellence(?) but because he has chosen to write books about his life and how brill he is and take sponsors money to prostitute their wares.

It is widely believed that he is able to exploit his profile through use of ped's and in so doing has surrendered his right to remaining unscrutinised. You can't on the one hand be shouting look at me, buy my autobiography, buy my products, be my fan then ask for the quiet life when people start to question how you got where you are.

I would generally defend the average man on the street from the scrutiny that Lance comes under on this forum but that's because the average man on the street is different. He generally doesn't profit from self promotion and he generally doesn't earn his crust when considered by many to be a cheat.

Hate to say it but that sounds like it could be just about any sports star. However I don't follow the "brill" thing(from the US you know). My dictionary says - brill - a European flatfish. Fill me in.

  • You are right, you can say that about most sports stars. I think the exceptions, if there are any left, are those that go out and give an honest performance, take their paycheque and go home. Any sports person who does that deserves to be left in peace. If they are believed to be cheats or decide to cash in on their persona then they are fair game.

There are guys in the peleton who are good cyclists, don't cheat and are not suspected of cheating and haven't written tell al books. We don't talk about them and they are probably the TdF heroes that Wiggins mentions.

Sorry about the use of the word "brill" it was my attempt at a youthful abbreviation of the word brilliant. At my age I should know my "plaice".

You could say that about any other topic on the boards. This thread has just passed the 100 posts mark, which makes it a fairly hot topic I'd say.

But then I would say that, seeing as it was my fantastic idea. 8)

Dennis old chap here is the thing.

The English have conquered and subdued the whining scots, the unemployable blackhaired midget miners of wales and the unspeakable irish but have been undone by an observance of liberality that means the scottish basically run the English Parliment despite that none of the scottish labour party have ever really had a proper job, the WElsh are well, Welsh and have their own increasingly independant state intent on disabling its population with its adherance and slavish devotion to a minor obselete language. Even the Irish have have their own parliament of sorts. The right on English are now ashamed of their own flag as its been claimedby the liberals as racist whilst the other members of greatbritain are encouraged to fly flags with pride and enjoy their culture.

Meanwhile English culture is to be swept away in the wave of multiculturalism that says Christmas should be Winterval, and people who settle here for a few months whilst carrying out terrorist activities are to be given support and housing. England is a morally bankrupt state obsesed with self loathing and no identity where immigrant and chav rights run independantly of responsibiltiy.

So the difference is English is to be spat upon and British is a feeding trough filled by the English.

I am English. I would be considered racist by popular directed thinking for pride in independance. yet the scots mostly live in the \english home counties and fly that blue thing with pride, the welsh have little red rabbity bthings on car bumpers and charge to enter their filthy mountain county. Its odd but thats the diference. I.E. its ok to be nationalist as long as youre not English.

The USA is impressive. You can be texan and you might be a lone star flag flying red neck but youre still American.

    Rant over.

Dennis - observe the English right in action. Typical rant goes like this: "I hate foreigners and others who don't share my nationality, but I get upset if somebody calls me racist."

Every Christmas the shops start celebrating/selling in September, the whole country goes into Christmas mode - lights on in every town, Christmas trees etc. Everybody's happy, except for the paranoid nutcase right, who sit there complaining that they aren't allowed to celebrate Christmas anymore because of the Muslims. All because 1 council, about 10 years ago, chose to have an elongated festival celebrating all of the major religious holidays (Birmingham has a massive ethnic minority population) and call it Winterval. I was in Birmingham at the time. The council had put up Christmas trees, Christmas lights, Happy Christmas signs, etc, etc, but because people believe any old shite they read in the Daily Mail, they thought that Christmas had been banned in Birmingham.

And there's my rant over with.

By the way Mark, if you're going to make a case for independence, you might want to learn how to spell the word.

  • Cricket and good manners old chap.

The other defining thing about being English is the Guardian and Telegraph reading self styled intelectual superiors. They are dismissive of readers of the Mail, a paper that panders to peoples frustrations and fears in a blatant way.
Oddly theres probably more independant thinking by the readers of the mail than the Guardian/telegraph.

Many schools no longer do tradidtional nativity plays for children at Christmas becasue theyre "innapropriate in modern multicultural Britain"

Not that this has anything to do with Lance doping
  • Of course if you are from where I am sat you are not English, Welsh, Scottish or Irish but Manx (for the record I'm a recent English immigrant to these shores).

The native people are fiercely independent (the Isle of Man is not part of the UK) even though you can clearly see all the UK countries from the top of the mountain. Anyone not Manx is a "comeover" and they will tell you so. But even though it is usually very windy, most of the roads are rough and it's quite hilly the locals sure can ride a bike!

IndependEnt thinking from a Mail reader?!?!?!

There's a reason that people look down on the Daily Mail. It's crap. 60-odd pages of telling British people (who live a life of luxury compared to the majority of the world's population) that they are somehow poor persecuted victims.

You are right, but I would put what you said slightly differently:

'There's a reason that people look down on the Daily Mail. It's crap. 60-odd pages of telling largely middle class British people (who live a life of luxury compared to a large proportion of the British population) that they are somehow poor persecuted victims.'

The Hate Mail's biggest joke is the way it peddles the myth of the 'persecution of the beleaguered motorist.' As I recall the Mail was also the first paper to use the term 'Lycra louts' to describe cyclists. And yet some would argue that fascism is dead!

P.s to be fair the Daily Mail is not alone it it's attitudes. Just look at the Express!
