As far as sponsorship goes I am only looking to raise the minimum and anything over will be a bonus, should easily raise that through family and friends.

Did you opt for the 50 or 100 mile route?

We went for the 50 mile route mate, its our first one so we dont want to risk it this year. Next year 100

The mimimum sponsorship shouldnt be a problem, got most of it already and I only registered this morning...... you must be going for the 100?

Found out that I can get the time off work so I have just registered for the 100. Hope to be ridnig with some of you on the day for at least part of the trip. Its going to be my first century so the training starts in earnest this week. Did 45 miles solo(first long ride since xmas) and will be out with the club on sunday so that should be between 50-60 miles. Then its 5 extra miles to the long ride each week and intervals, hill repeats and recovery rides through the rest of the week.

Good to hear that your coming along for the 100.
I am looking forward to it, clocked up just over 600 miles for the year so far so legs are getting back to where i want them to be after having a break in december. got a week in wales coming up soon aswell so should be in good condition ready for the sunrise in may.
would be good to have a companion for the ride, do you have any idea what time you plan to start?

Not sure about start time, I have gone to the site and the info has been updated but the timings have gone from the page so I am not sure. Living in North Norfolk I've got to allow enough time(about 2 hours) to get there and get ready but as its my first century I will have to give myself enough time to get round. I did the Norwich 50 in 2 h50m last year so I am hoping for a sub 7 hour time. I would like to ride with someone so as to keep my pace under control. What were you thinking of doing?

I was initially thinking of starting early but the more I think about it the more I go off the idea..lol...would make more sense to wake up and get myself sorted, I live a few miles from the start so not a problem for me.
I know probably 75% of the route so atleast i can warn you whats around each corner..lol...being Suffolk it's nothing to worry about thats for sure.
I am sure we can sort something out closer to the time regarding a start time, I have spoken to Gav about doing the first leg down to Felixstowe together aswell so maybe we can go as a trio!

Looks like a good ride. I didn't get into the Fred and this is local to me so I'll give it a bash.

It's a nice route, fairly flat with no hard climbs at all. If the weather is good the ride up the east coast will be great.

Anyone received their entry pack yet or do they arrive closer to the event?

This will be my first 100 so I've been following the beginners training guide linked off the booking site. I'm up to 66 miles but another 34 miles still seems a lot more to do, especially for a 50 something who's been a cyclist for only three years.

I'm a bit worried about trundling in at or near last last as my average speed on 66 was only 14.5mph and it would have fallen a bit more had I carried on, given my speed at the end. Everyone seems to be aiming to go a lot faster than that!

Is this event going to be a case of a lot of lycra disappearing into the distance in front of me or are there some more sedate riders as well?

I think you will be fine, on the day the adrenalin will kick in and if you find some like minded riders riding in a group will help no end. Don't forget an organised food and drink programme will help enormously.

As for the pack mine arrived a couple of weeks ago, about a fortnight after registering. Nothing special about it, a letter with your number on it , a sponsorship form and a training guide.

    Thanks for the encouragement!

I'm a bit of a solitary cyclist and have only done one run with a group (Suffolk Coast last year) so I'm not at all used to it. There's a few cyclists I give a wave to around Debenham but on my usual 25 miles runs in the more remote parts of mid Suffolk I'm lucky to see a car let alone another rider.

10TT pace for at least 25 miles and then pick it up for the rest :D
Seriously, I won't be going too mad at the start, like you I'm up to 65miles in training and about16.5mph average. I plan to take it gently down to the ferry before picking it up.

Nothing to do with the ride as such but I have some memories of the Bawdsey ferry area.

SWMBO and I were down there one afternoon in the 80s on a beautiful summers day just sitting watching the river. Behind us was a group on a lawn having afternoon tea in front of their house - teapots, china cups, table cloth, cake stands, the works. Suddenly two jets roared up the river at tree-top height from inland and passed right over the manor and out to sea, low enough for the jet wash to go over us. The noise was indescribable and as it ebbed we could hear sirens wailing ( Bawdsey was still MoD and surrounded by Bloodhound missiles) . Basically, it was a mock attack that caught Bawdsey with its pants down. I turned round and the carefully composed tea party was a small forest of waving legs in the air, upturned tables and chairs and a liberal scattering of broken crockery and pieces of cake. They had all dived to the ground, taking their meal with them. They did not seem best pleased that we were laughing so much it was painfiul.

    LMAO :P

FYI guys, if some of you are worried about speed, dont be, although my average is 15mph (rubbish I know) my girlfriends is more 11mph  so I will be having a relaxed 50 miler next month riding with her!! I dont blame you if you want to speed off at the start....

Seems like we have a few forum members doing the ride now.

I am off to Wales in the morning for a week in search of real climbs as Suffolk has none!

When I return maybe we should see if we can arrange meeting and maybe doing some of the ride together, I am up for a leisurely cruise down to felixstowe and once we are off the ferry we can go on at our own pace.

I'm an Ipswich boy and me and a couple of mates are riding.
I did the Essex Road Spring Lamb Sportive at the weekend, and will be using the Sunrise (aswel as a few more) to get ready for the Dragon.
I hope the weather is as good as it was last year, it was flamin' gorgeous!!!! 8)
  • Hi guys.

I've just started cycling and have a mountain bike from the 80's with road tyres. I was aiming to ride in the Norwich 100 in June (hopefully I'll own a more suited bike by then) but after reading your posts and finding out about the Suffolk Sunrise, I think I'll up my training and try and join you all, if you don't mind a noobie hanging on for a while.

The more the merryer, I think the plan is for all to start and ride down to the ferry together then people can go at their own pace.

We need to organise where and when we are to meet at the start, maybe if every one who is interested in cruising down to Felixstowe as a BikeRadar group posts a response to this message we can set about getting things organised.
