I've got to bring the Focus, I think, so DDD can stroke it. And people can come up with ways of stopping the internally mounted cable slapping away over the smallest bump. Current idea = fill top tube with slime.

    Is that still not sorted?!

Is tension an issue? Alternatively, is there a sleeve of some description you can use to raise the cable within the tube itself? This would require re-routing though.

Spotted this too - you are not alone...: http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=15042358

Expanding Foam Polyfilla is ideal for filling and sealing awkward gaps, hollows and cavities. It shoots liquid foam deep into cavities, creating a long lasting seal, which insulates against heat, sound and moisture. Suitable for inside or out, it can be easily trimmed and sanded ready to be painted, filled or plastered. Contains a CFC - free propellant.

Thing is I am quite tempted! I can't use anything which will seal it permanently though otherwise it'll be impossible to change the cables. I wonder if an internet-wide search might come up with a solution?

(CJ, yes, it's clearly not tense enough but I just can't think of a way of making it sufficiently tense since then it'd still bang against the top of the top tube. Sigh.)

    Cable donuts?

You are sure it's the cable, right? CF frames are notoriously echoey when it comes to noises, making it difficult to localise the cause.

Yep, certain it's the cable. There's an actual occasional other noise, closer to the front, which sounds more disturbingly like carbon fibre cracking, but I'm pretty sure it's one of the cables leading off the bars.

Are cable donuts the small rubber rings that prevent the cable from slapping the frame? Yes, in theory - except how do you get them *inside* the top tube? I'll show you on Friday why I'm baffled :)

You will probably need to re-route the cable. On the strength of the other thread I mentioned, your situation is not a one-off; it might also be a problem with those TT bikes which have internal cable routing. It might therefore be worth taking it to your LBS (Holdsworth on LR Rd?) to see if they can suggest anything. One option might to cover the section of the cable which is inside the tube (so that it weighs the cable down and reduces the slap and the sound of wire on CF) *provided* you're able to get it in and out comfortably.

I still wonder whether you can buy some rubber thingy which fits into the area where the cable enters and exits the frame and which continues into the space within the top tube, thereby lifting the cable away from the frame.

Can you post pictures of the sections where the cable enters and exits the frame?

Biondino - I think a couple of guys in my club have got a Focus. I'll ask them if they've come across this problem and, if so, how they have resolved (assuming they have).

@Biondino - you should hear the noises my Pinarello makes - internal routing as well, I've just learned to live with it. I have donuts (mmmmm donuts...) on the outside where the cables skirt the headtube, these help a bit. TBH it's only noticeable on rough tarmac so I don't worry too much. Scared the cr@p out of me when I first rode though!

I'd always imagined the Prince to be about as close to a perfect bike as possible :-) Still I guess it is a fairly difficult thing to eliminate tho, without putting a layer of foam padding inside the tubes where the cables run internally.......still a small nuisance to put up with and as you said it's only over rough roads.

Speaking of rough roads I went over the cobbles in Leadenhall Market the other day (hadn't been up there for a while and my usual cut through route was closed so had to divert) and jaysus christ! I know I'm only on a bottom of the line Giant road bike but I was being jarred all over the place, I have no idea how the tour riders race on cobbles for the final stage!!!

See the "Tour of Flanders" thread in the "Road" section: lightly grip the handlebars, put the hammer down and keep it down. (Fyi, I bounced all over the shop. But there's a downhill stretch of cobbles on that route too. That was just nuts. At the top, I thought, "Mummy.". I would have cried had it been wet. The locals fly down it; they're barking.)

  • I broke my wrist falling off on cobbles in Oxford.

I am now a leeeeetle bit nervous riding on them.

    Ahem.

I think you'll find, BJUK, that when the pros want a silent bike that soaks up cobbles, they look long and hard for the perfect candidate.

Which is Bike 2, below.

  • I've got a lock or two but would rather bring the bike inside if that's an option, I gather I can carry it upstairs somewhere? Haven't been before.
  • Bikes can be brought upstairs, the manager is fine with that.

I'll be locking mine outside - don't fancy carrying it up the stairs!!
  • I haven't forgotten my lock, but sadly I'm not coming either.

I have, however, invested in a HUGE extra-super long range ex-NASA high contrast 8-bit grayscale instantaneously-digital zoom lens for my camera, and will try to take pictures of you drunkards from my bedroom window tonight.
