Richmond Park Ride

I'm definitely up for a next time, although for me it may be a case of meet at the beginning, hang on for a lap and just then catch up afterwards for a drink.
Although now there's actually some air in my tyres, I may be able to hang on for two laps...;)0 -

I have no idea what you are talking about so I'll take that as a gentlemenly compliment then?
You've got to be careful the barrel adjuster on the rear mech, it's easy to go too far and then you're in the shit.Fixed gear for wet weather / hairy roadie for posing in the sun.
What would Thora Hurd do?0 -

I wouldn't want that.0 -

I was going to ask how you managed to get shit in there, with out it turning to shit
so will this work or will piss turn into piss?
edit: well that worked ...tee heeee0 -
I reckon Jen's tyres were sabotaged by someone who felt their masculinity might be at stake. Not me obviously, cos I only rolled up a minute before we set off.0

Sorry I missed the ride I was vetoed from the early morning start as I'd been away the rest of the weekend.
I did, however, get to ride down to York Hill and Titsey Hill in Kent to watch the Catford CC Hill Climb (the end anyway) and the start of the Bec Hill Climb. A total ride of 50 miles with some fairly decent climbs and descents interspersed.
I'd be keen as mustard for another one though. ]And ChingfordS maybe we could do an East end ride if you had any..green.....space...oh well it was a nice thought [/quote
 Cheek There's plenty of green space in east London - so I'm told  There's always Victoria Park of course - seen a few velo-kids there at times (Mind, I'd still be cream crackered from riding the canal to get there - well that's my F@C'N excuse anyway (see what i did there with the censored word LoL )Pain is only weakness leaving the body0 -
Well RP is definitely possible on a SS - almost even for me. Got halfway up Broomfield Hill (clockwise) before deciding it was too windy and too much effort, so bottled it and walked the rest of the way up.
Rest of the lap was a breeze, although I was coasitng a bit on the downhills, so I wouldn't be confirdent on a fixie round there. But then I probably wouldn't be confident on a fixie anywhere at the moment :oops:0 -
Nice research, so all we need now is the date & time
Who's in?

I was thinking about heading over there on the bowery this evening actually, to see if I could do a lap fixed. I've never been there before... but to be honest 3.5 days travelling has left me rather knackered... another day.0

Absolutely no way, not clockwise at least, and come to think of it not anti clockwise either.
I say that, if you zig zag up the hils then you might, but that would be cheating kindof.0 -

What's the score cycling round there in the dark?
I mean are we allowed, will we be hunted down and our limp bodies taken by the parkie?
Do the deer sit about on the road waiting for night time cyclists??
I wanna know
Anyone?0 -

Can you get into richmond park after dark, I though all the gates were shut, including pedestrain ones?0 -
The park is accessible via the pedestrian gates after the main gates shut. This is year round apart from a couple of times a year when they are shut for deer related reasons (foaling, culling etc)
I've never done it but, it is said, on a night ride you have to watch out for the deer wandering across the roads en masse
@L_i_t: RP on a fixie is doable, no worries0 -
The deer cull starts during the 2nd or 3rd week in November. The gates will be locked after dark during this period. Best not to sneak in during this period....
I've swapped night riding in the Park for night riding at Hillingdon. There's not as much atmosphere, but the deer hazard is much reduced ('lo replaced by a Bhangraboy problem). Even with a Lumi HID it was getting hard to see the deer. Herds are easy enough to spot (but don't want to shoo out of the way), but the problem comes with coming down Dark or Sawyers and finding a concealed solo...0 -
I was wondering whether we had to "sneek in" or whether it was fair game to ride round the park on or off road
Just seems that there are some mild nights and rather mess with cars, a nice bit of clear open, but dark road, could be a bit of fun...if not I'll just get out the Xmas lights and do my 25 mile ring in the dark0 -
+1 for fixed in fact the FGSS lot are already planning both night rides and fixed rides, watch out for the deer they change direction suddenly and quickly.
I was thinking of doing it single speed for now my fixed bike is SCARY SLOW and weird to ride, oh yes heavy and fek plus I don't think a 42/15T would be very easy.
LiT's this sounds like a challenge to me and if anyone among us can do it your the woman :PRule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

Alternatively you could try super early in the morning, not many cars around then either.Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

with the exception of the cull, and any special closures put in (e.g. for foot & mouth), there is a general right of way across the Park at all times. You don't need to sneek in, the kissing gates are open even when the vehicle gates are locked.0 -
Right then, who's up for 2am Sunday? :?0

I would say trying the park on a fixie would be purgatory. You would be walking at least once on either direction.0 -

Well, all you unbelievers... infidels... HA!
Although I struggled massively up the last hill in the 'easy' direction leading back towards Richmond Gate, I made it all the way round in a reasonable amount of time, thanks to my park guide Biondino
So it IS possible in the easy direction (anti-clockwise?) on a 46/14, although hard work. I don't think I'd have made it up the big hill going the other way.
You also don't need to sneak in after it closes, but you do definitely need to look out for runners and deer, we saw a stag - cool!
Tips include:
- bring good front lights, it's proper dark
- buy some gloves Olivia you prat
- eat before going - thanks for the chocolate Biondino
- if it's your first time round and it's dark, bring someone who knows it really well.
All in all lots of fun!!
Oh and next time let's sit INSIDE the pub. Nobody even tried to nick the bikes.
Brrrrrrr....0 -
Don't forget the rabbit with a death wish!
LiT's spokey dokeys that light up are SO COOL. I totally want some now (though my super hardcore aero spokes won't currently take them).
Btw you have another PM (about waterpolo).0 -

Sounds like you had fun - I'm jealous 8)
I'm going to head back over this afternoon, with the aim of not getting off at all on the anti-clockwise lap, but I will most definitely be cheating and be freewheeling down the big hill - respect to you for doing that on a fixie...0 -
Jen J wrote:but I will most definitely be cheating and be freewheeling down the big hill - respect to you for doing that on a fixie...
The secret is that I did it pretty slowly on the brakes the whole way down.
TBH, as it was dark and I didn't know the road, I'd have done the same on a freewheel.
I am a bit of a wuss like that. :oops:0
