How much abuse do you think the Scale 30 could handle?

I've been riding my 2008 over some pretty gnarly stuff recently.. not major dropoffs more 30mph rooty/rocky sections, north shore, 1-2ft drops... :D mosty clean lines when I can.

No problem with what you are describing. I was talking to the owner of a bike shop in Dollgelau (sp? - near CYB) Wales a little while back, and he takes his scale 20 over pretty major drops with no problems, he reckoned they were a lot stronger than you think.

Just to post more knowledge onto this thread...

    Scott Scale 30 2008 Upgrades
    1) Swapped the Racing Ralph tyres for some Panaracer Fire XC Pro 2.1s. three reasons. a) Racing Ralphs are way too sketchy in anything but bone dry hardpack singletrack. On that they totally fly. Show them some mud, roots, wet rocks, etc and its like cycling on ice. with slicks. b) punctures, tyre walls are far too thin, and c) a sharp rock put a 2" gash in the rear tyre wall... rubbish. Downside of the new tyres is weight and rolling resistance. Far more enjoyable ride tho.
    2) Red hope bar plugs - just because they look bling with the red walled panaracers :)
    3) Specialized ergonomic bar ends
    4) Replaced the saddle :)
    5) XTR clipless pedals for long XC sprints
    6) Red DMR V12s for playing in the local woods.

Nearly replaced the bars and stem to risers as some steep DH felt like the bike was going to throw you over the bars. After pumping more PSI into the forks this seems to have improved things so going to stick with the flats. They put you in a fantastic 'attack' position which is what this bike is all about.

    http://www.bikeradar.com/mtb/gear/category/components/pedals/product/xtr-pedal-13428 For the pedals :)

Saddle - interesting question, I have a Fizik Gobi XM saddle on trial from the LBS. Went hammering through the local woods and not quite convinced its the one yet. Did get back and notice its a little 'nose up' so will level out and try over the course of the week :D.

If not then next on the list is a Fizik Aliante Gamma XM, following that a Specialized Toupe. Notice all these saddles come in white so they match the fox forks :)

Also about to order these to match the forks :Dhttp://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=24585 in red white and blue of course ;)

odd, even when plugged full of mud I can still clip in and out no problem, the mud just 'squidges' out the way? Round here the mud is like clay, super sticky and thick, never once had a problem.

OK, while we're on the subject of scale upgrades, here's mine (mostly wear and tear replacements tbh)

LX to XT Shifters, cassette and Front Mech
XT to XTR Shadow Rear Mech
Selle Italia SLR XP saddle - scott saddle was awful
Swapped RR's to Fire XC Pros and then back again IMHO Fire's ruin the feel of the Scale, RR's make it sketchy true, but that's my impression of what scott intended for this bike - ie light, sharp etc - they certainly keep you on your toes. However, now that winter is here the Fire's are back on  because RR's are pants in the mud.
Time Pedals - they never clog, ever
XTR Cables as my Jagwires were cracking (!!)
Deore Skewers - they weigh 2g more than XTR, but a fair bit lighter than the boggo mavic ones, plus I got sick of lubing the cams. Shimano skewers also dont require a crowbar to set up tight!
Truvative to XT crankset/BB as the BB wore along with the middle ring on the truvative

Apart from possibly the bars/stem/seatpost which I intend to swap for Ritchey Carbon affairs that is all I'll do to the scale - I'm happy with the Crossrides despite them being 'heavy' and the fork is spot on.

With all that done it'll be high 21lbs, which if i'm honest is light enough, especially as i've now got a 36lb freeride bike to lug around the peaks to do some training / light DH on. Jumping back on the scale is bizarre now, it feels weightless - so watch out if you do any races next year, i'll be the one with legs like tree trunks struggling to keep traction in top cog

This is an honest question with no harm intended as I too like to upgrade bits on my scale, but.....

Was there a particular reason why you bought the scale 30 ie colour scheme? As it seems to me like you would of been better getting a 20 or 10 - or even Ltd in the first place.

Like I say, this is an honest question

    sorry i missed this post.

To be honest i only had enough cash at the time to buy the scale 20 or 30.
I prefered the scale 30 colour scheme and knew that i would be upgrading components to a much higher spec than the scale 20 over time. Its a hobbie im very passionate about.
your scale 10 frame colour is much nicer than the 20 but like i said at the time i didnt have that much cash to spare.
I see you have the XTR shadow rear mech like me.........its outrageously light dont you think!!! i weighed mine and its 162 .2 grams on calibrated scales!!!!

Just replaced my BB with a Superstar Ceramic jobby. Not an upgrade, simply the Truvativ had worn again (this time after only 500 miles and I never use a pressure wash  ) and wanted to try something different. It's actually lighter by 20g

I weighed the bike with RR tyres on, no sealant, no bottle cage (but with the Garmin Edge stuff on it). Weight was 9560g

Thanks for replying - I was dreading that you'd took offence

    I agree about the 20 - it's a bit garish colourwise

Yeah I love the XTR shadow, I 'bent' my XT one so I 'had' to get the XTR one :lol:

Where did you locate the Pilot Bar/Stem combo..? I assume that what it is.

Still, waiting for my frame to come back. I'll post picks when it arrives. Getting frustrated at not riding.

  • your right dilker that is what stem bars are scale ltd pilot sl bar stem combo.i got them at a real price too.they were the last ones they had i think but if you like i will ask if they have any left and let you know?
I think it looks great with the matching red stripe down the stem.
im just so confused as to what wheels to get.

i use the bike to ride to work each day you see.but i really want the lightest wheels i can afford.you cant beat stans race 7000 for weight but im not sure if you can get enough pressure in them to be useful on the road.i see that sun do a nice cross country rim at 350 grams but thats just a clincher, also dt swiss do the carbon rim but those are very expensive.

Stans ZTR355 have a max inflation of 60psi.

Can get them built onto XTR hubs at JRA for 300 quid.
  • thanks for the advice.Xtr as nice as they are,are just to heavy and are a centrelock disc fitment,i would prefer 6 bolt fitment hubs.i want sub 1300 gram wheelset if possible
i did visit jra web page last week with the intention of ordering the american classic stans race 700 combo but they havent any in stock.i think i might give the3m a ring this week and see if they can recomend a set to suit my requirements

Wow, you really wanna splash then lol, I sorta though about 300 quid! I think for 300 they are about as light as you can get apart from the sale AC wheels I saw on Merlin.

Have a look at posh bikes:

    http://www.poshbikes.com/product.php?id=153

1130g, and would be 1000 with olympic rims!

No don't worry about that, thanks for the offer. I'm about to get a new FS machine. I'll need to save my pennies for that, well modifications on that.

Ive been looking at the disc versions you have posted and they seem a serious contender.I bet when i ring posh bikes they say oh that price is out of date they are now even more expensive.lol
i bought my light handle bar grips from posh bikes and they are quite comfy wilst saving 60 grams off the orginal grip weight.
Cj where are you now ive actually got some pics up youve disapeared?
