  • thanks CJ thats quite heavy for the price then. xt cheaper and lighter.

I called in the local bike shop today to pick up those sram power links you were advising me on.they didnt have any in stock so not possible to fit front mech yet.

im just going to order kmc x9 sl chain in silver and be done with it.

i removed the granny ring today off the slx crank it saved me 46.7 grams with bolts!!!

i wont need granny ring so i wont miss it to be honest.

KMC chains are very nice, but get powerlinks (or KMC spares) as well (KMC comes with a pair - own version but essentially the same, think they call them missing links - it is always useful to carry a couple of spares).

Yep on the SRAM, about £20 more than XT and heavier. About the best bang for buck IMHO, and last very well. My KCNC is quieter today, reckon it must have been grinding off the CNC machining edges yesterday.

My frame is goosed :X I was riding last night and experienced some strange changing. I got home and took my crankset off to find that the housing for the bottom bracket was loose. It had come away from the carbon. Needless to say i am gutted. Was a sad few minutes stripping it down.

I've spoke to my LBS today and they will send it off and seemed to think it will be covered by the warranty. Let's hope so. I might be cheeky and ask for a Scale 10 frame if i pay the extra... we'll we.

See my post - if you get it replaced it should be a Scale 10 frame - seems like it's standard procedure at Scott. My 2008 30 has just been replaced with a 2009 10 (the frame is the same just different colour)

    Sorry to hear this anyway

I've been told by a few bike shops that Scott are really hot on warantee issues.. so you should be OK ... here's hoping.

On wheels... I get another bonus soonish [I'm not in financial services] so thinking about Mavic SLRs. Reason - I like Mavic UST rims / wheels, nice and light (1400ish Kg), reasonable price (less than £600)) and tough. Can service them myself. And couldn't justify another £1,400 for 200g saving for carbon DT Swiss that DON'T take UST tyres and NO WAY am I going back to tubes (or mickey mouse tubeless conversions)

I think the SLRs are meant to weigh nearer 1600 grams for the 6 bolt disc version. You might want to check this out before spending your hard earned cash.

    Accordiong to Mavic webbie...

Proven and tested in World Cup, this wheel won every major titles in 2006. Light : 1420g per set AND stiff thanks to the exclusive mavic technologies : straight pull zicral spokes (10% stiffer compared to steel spokes for the same weight), fore drilled rims, isopulse lacing... Low inertia thanks to 21mm rims with maximum ISM (Inter Spoke Milling) for a better boost.

You might be thinking of the Mavic SL (about 1550g).

    But other reviews say different...
And the weight? The 15/9mm front wheel comes in at 690g, with the rear being 830g for a six-bolt and 820g for a Centerlock. So a six-bolt pair dusts the scales at 1,520g. That's actually the same weight as the 2008 wheels, but Mavic's big thing for '09 is reduced inertia and better stiffness - the weight's come out of the rims and spokes and gone into the hubs and axles.

    :?

I'm guessing the weight quoted on Mavic's site is without valves or something. It's a little annoying when they quote weights that are not real, eg forks quoted without oil

I wouldn't really take the weights which Mavic give as correct. I remember reading many times before that the weights are usually higher than what they state. Here are a couple of threads:

    http://weightweenies.starbike.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=48235&highlight=slr

    http://weightweenies.starbike.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=47757

It also sounds like the weights they specify are for Centre Lock version which is slightly lighter than the 6 bolt. Judging by your cassette and saddle you are concerned about weight. I didn't you you to buy the Mavic wheels then find out they are alot heavier that you thought and then I wished I would of made a post.
  • I would prefer to keep the DT swiss 240s hubs you have and have them built up with some aerolite spokes and a strong light cross country rimset.SLR.s are quite heavy for the price i think.

ON another note the chain i ordered wont be here until the end of the month ended up ordering the x9 sl in gold lol .
Also i have bought XTR shifters, rear cassette and nokon cables.wont fit them though until new chain arrives.
maybe oneday CJ my bike will be as light as yours lol.until that day ill just keep pedaling.

came of the bike yesterday bike is ok apart from outer chain ring getting the anodising ground off lol.i have a stiiff neck though and a slightly bruised ego hehe but i will live for now anyway.

    Thanks.

They seem a lot heavier than I thought  And, no point changing for the money.... My wheels are currently 1857g (includes valves but after taking off tyres and rotors etc). So for a weight saving of 200 to 250g not worth it for the price.

That'll look great with the gold chain.

Hope you recover quickly. I managed to break a rib earlier this year by tuimbling onto a sticky up root. Took ages to feel properly right again, but carried on riding after 2 weeks.

  • Well CJ i just couldnt resist.

Here is whats happened to my scale 30 2009 so far. pictures are on the horizon.

    Hope mini mono pro
Scott pilot sl (scale ltd) bars and stem
    XTR shifters
    XTR front mech
    XTR shadow rear mech
    Selle Italia slr carbonio
    KCNC skewers
    Continetal supersonic tubes
    KCNC chain ring bolts
    XTR cassette (not fitted yet)
KMC x9 sl gold chain (not fitted yet)
last two items will be fitted next month along with a new crankset.
Now the crankset option seems to draw me to the XTR because its not to exspensive quite light and will stand up to a few knocks.
I have been looking at other more exotic cranks but its a tough call?????
throw up some other sugestions chaps maybe there is something else out their.
    clavs are way to expensive!!!!
Oh and a big thankyou to all who have helped in this thread so far.

i,m considering buying another frame to put all these old bits on lol.
ive tuned the xt rear mech which i removed from the bike ive got it down to 217 grams and thats with out ceramic bearings in the pulleys..........pictures are in the pipeline :D:D

    Very nice.

I do like the XTR cranksets about £200. There are the Aerozine ones for 300, but not seen any reviews (and previous reviews on the heavier ones said finish wasn't too great). All in all, if I was replacing cranks I would go XTR :D

After all my talk earlier of the DT Swiss hubs, my front bearings went bad at the weekend and it is now in the LBS for replacement - would do it myself, but the assembly / dissasembly tools cost £150  Cheaper to let LBS do it.

This is an honest question with no harm intended as I too like to upgrade bits on my scale, but.....

Was there a particular reason why you bought the scale 30 ie colour scheme? As it seems to me like you would of been better getting a 20 or 10 - or even Ltd in the first place.

Like I say, this is an honest question

ive had a probe at fsa cranks the carbon light one was looking like the one to own until i found out their chainrings have an odd bcd?? and are only lighter than XTR by 40 grams or so.this doesnt justify the extra £250.
Raceface mmm will take a look.

What about extralite crankset?? are they all that?? i know their chain rings are so light and would look just right on the XTR crankset :D

CJ surprised to hear about the bearing problem? but i bet youve had your fun out of them do far ......hope everything turns out nice.
It would surprise me if you opted for cermic bearings lol....their like £117 a pop for those hubs i think?? im sure if you mic,d them up and got the OD ID and width you could locate some somewhere on the web hehe.what ever happens good luck .
  • ive got 4 pics of the bike now on pc but i cant upload them ????
i even joined pinkbike and did all they ask still my pics wont upload? hmm computers and me dont mix at the minute??

  • Would also like a durability update on that casset apart from the weight saving would love to see if it lasts any longer. If it does it would be a good investment.

Seems fine so far, but that's after only few miles - since fitting on 10th October I've only done 120 miles. Some of the criticism I saw on other sites said they didn't fit freehubs properly becauise of machining proplems. These were absolutely great to fit. Others said they only lasted one ride, and these have done more than that.

I honestly couldn't see them lasting longer than SRAM or XT cassettes as some of the material is softer / thinner to be lighter. So replacing to last longer would be bad economy I expect. We'll see.

How much abuse do you think the Scale 30 could handle?

I've been riding my 2008 over some pretty gnarly stuff recently.. not major dropoffs more 30mph rooty/rocky sections, north shore, 1-2ft drops... :D mosty clean lines when I can.
