I see the problem. That's a road car. You need a mountain car or at worst a cross car for that kind of surface.
  • cheers for the advice dude. Usually ride a trek 1.9 (dont shave the legs). usaully keep in a high gear, challenge myself to beat cars of the line at traffic lights and so on.

Pain is weakness leaving the body at the end of the day.

    Cheers for the advice.

    Have a good one.

I need a SS. Don’t think the GF will let me buy another bike. What she don’t know won’t hurt her I suppose.

Another thing is I don’t live in the city. I'm way in the sticks (Marlow) a few more hills than the city as well.

guys any advice on a nice single speed.

Answer on an particularly abusive postcard if necessary, a polite one will have the same response

Well your in luck then as you sort of already have one, pick a gear and don't change out of it, it's the best way to decide you want to make the commitment and find out which gear you prefer. If you're really stuck for cash buy a second rear wheel from ebay and convert it to SS and leave you mech and dérailleur in place until your ready to go the whole way.

    Good work there!

Blimey ITB, you must have been going some. It's actually held together pretty well hasn't it? How are you doing?

I have an excellent osteopath who has really sorted me out after a little chav crashed into me a while ago - if you're interested? However, he is in London.

I'm fine, pretty much, still some bruising and a sore lower back not helped by cycling :(

I'm pretty sure braking with my legs has done my knee ligament... I've taken it easy and used the road bike more. Anyone have any suggestions about knee care I think the damage might be permanent :x

  • hello people, I don't normally hang out here. You are a bit scary.

Anyway, I have just joined the fixed commuter gang so it's time to conquer that fear. My new bike is a revolution courier s1ngle, so you can laugh at my small ring (42) and flat bars.

My commute is 125 miles though, so if I pretend I am riding all of it, and not just the last tiny bit, the size of my ring won't matter!

hi one geared people. i am now one of you! Got my one geared bike on sunday!

First commute on it on monday, ran it singlespeed because the shop didnt have a fixed cog in. Beat a litespeed road full Ti bike and left him eating my dust, he then caught up with me when i stopped at a set of lights and proceeded to RLJ to hide his embarrasment of being beaten by a singlespeed steel bike.

Been off work yesterday and today, fitted my fixed cog today so shall be giving that a ride tomorrow into work. First time riding fixed, any tips?

I rode my single speed on my short training route this morning and even with all the mud and muck in the road I was still quicker than with my road bike, could have done with knobbly tyres  so bad it was almost cyclocross.

As you may remember I suffered from patella bursitis a few months back and very almost had to have it removed which would have entailed a long, boring and no doubt painful rehab - I suggest you MTFU and get yourself seen by a pro. (A doc. you filthy minded beast) as soon as poss. the last thing you should do is ignore it.

Low speed man-oo-vering (can't spell it) is a pig as you are clipped in and still turning... Just wait.

Pedal strike on kerbs - you need more space on the inside when filtering as your kerb side crank can't stay high and let you coast along.... This will catch you out.

Post your first "elevator of shame" incident when you forget you are a passenger on the ever turning wheel and have a sudden northwards injection of height.

it's feeling better... I spoke to a trainer at the gym and he reckoned avoid lateral movement and you'll be alright... but a docs appointment would be most sensible

You will come to a stop at the lights with your pedals in completely the wrong position to push off. Never fear - simply lift your back wheel by applying the front brake and leaning forward, and rotate your pedals to the appropriate location.

Thanks for the tips, especially the filtering one, never thought of that. I dont tend to filter too much on my commute anyway as im lucky enough to miss most of the traffic

cheers clever pun, never thought of that one :P

Low speed manouvering? any advice other than just wait?

I shall report on me flying over the handlebars tomorrow, heading skywards!

If i've managed the ride as a SS and im using the same gearing should it be just as shattering? Or is it likely to be much more tiring?

Oooooooh sorry I was abroad, and so had to wait until now to say I told you so....

However, I am not so vindictive that that is my only input - have you seen a doctor? Damaged ligaments can be very serious - get yourself checked out and take it easy.

Seems the FGSS lot are planning a regular RP training ride, given the success of the SCR inaugural RP ride would anyone be interested in our own Single/Fixed version?

My Lidl computer registered a max speed of 53.9mph on a 44/16 SS which equates to approx pedal rpm of 260   Think it more likely to be interference from an outside source but not figured out what yet as this occurred on two different routes.

    re:- the two videos.
Maybe it's my tiny ring, but neither cadence seems outrageous for a sprint, that said the refresh rate in the videos does make working out what's going on quite difficult, try watching the riders thighs rather than their feet to get a better idea.

SS riding has changed the way I ride my road bike of a wekend to the extent that when everybody else is turning 90 rpm, I'm more comfortable spinning along at 105 ish.
    "Impressive break"
