    I love Tailwinds.

ALMOST (but not quite) hit the mythical 20mph average this morning and if it hadn't been for that horse and carriage peleton with the police escort by PS/Birdcage Walk I reckon I would have made it . . .

Wasn't much fun this morning - still more fun than PT though....

Well that was no fun at all, weather was appalling! All wet and gusty. After four days off the bike I was expecting big things. But I guess if all four days involved very little sleep, best man duties and, occasionally, heavy drinking, perhaps I was too optimistic. Legs felt like lead and while I kept up a decent pace, I just couldn't get my HR up enough to care about SCR. :(

managed to only suffer a light misting of rain which turned into a downpour about 3 minutes after I got to the office.

the guy who walked 2 streets away from the station was more soaked than I was after 6 miles

Slow and steady, and wet and windy. I may need new [read working] brake pads.
Which ones work in rain again, Kool Stop Salmons?

MTFD for me today - the combination of heavy rain and strong winds sounded like a recipe for an off, or at least mild hypothermia. PT was fine - got a seat as far as London Bridge.

It wasn't that bad out there this morning. :) Bike rack was nearly empty though?

  • I still cant feel my feet. Anyone know of any West End retailers who sell Seal Skin socks?
  • Great trip in, despite the rain. Almost no perceivable wind at all*. Strange that I didn't see more cyclists.

*However, had I been going in the other direction it would have been more than perceivable. Here's looking forwards to tonight. ;)

Evans usually stock them, the one just off of Oxford Street might be worth a look if its West End enough; http://goo.gl/maps/fWJs

Quite sunny in Bristol now, not that I've rode to work today as I was waiting for a sparky to do his magic which turned out to be something I could have done myself.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

I'm running Salmons at the back, normal on the front (the pair ear-marked for the front are somewhere in the shed). No noticeable difference, tbh - it still feels like I have the stopping distance of a super-tanker.

Be sure to clean the rims and pads before setting off this evening.

Couldn't cycle in this morning due to commuter hack being in bits. Would have taken the winter trainer, but I left my cycling shoes in Yorkshire. And I'm just not taking the best bike out in this crap.

Epic tail wind. Cruising @ 25mph and easily hitting 30mph when putting a bit of effort in - even scalped a couple of scooters who were napping (this is on a slicked MTB by the way :P). Kind of felt sorry for the people I saw coming the other way struggling to do 10mph though...

Not looking forward to going home...

  • I really don't mind this weather at all (not now that I've got my toasty overshoes anyway!), but I had absolutely NO idea which direction the wind was coming from this morning.

Seemed to be all directions at once....
So presumably will be just the same on the way back!

I kinda enjoyed the ride in, wet and windy it may be, but I was warm and partly dry. PBK's own brand pads FAIL in the wet though. Time to get some SwissStop ordered.

    eVent jacket - check
    Goretex trousers - check
    eVent boots - check
    Waterproof gloves - check
Windstopper buff and hat - check
    Disc brakes - check

Feet got a little damp, but that will change when my mudguards arrive.

I thought it was supposed to be a tail wind in this morning, dunno what happened there....

I may need to upgrade the pads on my planet-x, too. There was one "whoa, pleeze don't brake that sharply, mr car in front" moment.

Was regretting wearing mitts for the first few miles but other than that nice and toasty :)

    Somewhat implausibly, I didn't. :D

I quite like cycling in the rain, tbh. Did it on Friday night and really enjoyed it. But there's no shower at my office, so cycling in when the weather's this bad is a no-no.

Mmmm just looked at XC weather and metoffice sites, they actually have large red arrows pointing east & west, that can't be good.

Who knew trees could bend that much

+1 - I was cursing only wearing the one pair of full finger gloves today. On the plus side, crud guards played a stormer, wet feet and hands but otherwise I was pretty much dry by the time I got to work. I reckon that with a pair of overshoes I'll be all set for rainy days.

Caliper brakes in the wet, on the other hand - more than a bit worrying. I probably need to get some Kool Stop / Swiss Stop pads but even with those on the Viner it still feels like suicide hitting any sort of speed in traffic. I actually got overtaken down College Road this morning - the shame!

I was lulled into a false sense of security by the recent balmy weather. What made it worse was I had long-fingered gloves in the bag. My fingers stopped complaining once I reached fulham, though
