But I guess if you're slim and 11 stone on a bike weighing less than 9kg then headwind doesn't affect so much...

Whereas if you're pushing 12 stone and on a bike weighing more than 20kg, it's a real issue.

Sadly all too well. It was my weight this time last year before I embarked on my Marmotte training. A hard slog indeed.

I can recommend that stomach bug I had the other week - 5 pounds lost in a week

Au contraire. I reckon they'd be the most efficient way of gaining 5lbs bar chips and gravy.

    Eventful night...

Some berk was too close to me heading down Millbank (the bit before LBR) and, when it came to stopping at the ped crossing two thirds of the way down, the guy behind was too close, couldn't stop in time and tried to slip between me and a vehicle on my right. He did, but not without hitting me. Didn't look back to apologise either.

Suitably irked, I caught him on Millbank and pointed out there was no need to apologise..

After a brief chat with a Scouser at VB lights about the headwind, the lights go green and an SSer zips away and he's quickly gapped everyone. Passing the masses, I set my sights on the SSer. Hmm, the silly cadence and his slip of of a frame seem familiar. I'm pretty sure it's The Other Me ("TOM"). Yep, definitely him. He's making good progress down DSC and I eventually pull alongside just as the road bends right at the end of DSC.

A quick chat to acknowledge each other and up to CB. Proper introductions take place at the red lights. Nice to meet you, sir. :)

CB to AB was just a world of pain. Me and TOM pass a chap on a Giant off the slope who's pushing what looks to be too big a gear for the conditions. He's dropped.

I have to crouch on the hoods (although the crouch could easily have been a slump) and I'm absolutely dying inside by the time we reach AB. No danger of me shaking TOM, though. I think we then got separated by the traffic up to BB.

Was forced to pootle down the LRR, until I spotted a chap on a Spesh on Queen's Ride. Damn this SCR! Caught him but he got the better of the traffic before Bolan DCB, and I then miss the lights. Pootle through Sheen before some hill reps in Richmond.

    I need a beer.

After a day on PT I've got a nice Californian Zinfandel on the go. Combination of a tough 2 weeks at work plus the tube warranted opening a decent bottle from the collection.

Back on the bike tomorrow with fresh legs

Just a couple of scalps along DSC again this evening. Wasn't realy feeling the wind too much at that point, but it must have been taking its toll (along with starting the day at 0510hrs), as by the time I got to Tooting Broadway, I was properly spent. Pootled the rest of the way.

No that's not me. Mine is more like just two green strips going down the bag cover. I also hope I don't look as....ummm... well built as that chap, from behind.

That's great footage though, really clear. Do you wear the helmet cam all the time? I'm kind of tempted to get one now :D

Was it no cycling day and nobody told me? Roads almost completely devoid of cyclists. Only person that looked like they might SCR was a chap on an Orbea and dhb shorts at the top of London Bridge. Went over the bridge and then he went straight and me left.
Was a nice ride in though, lights were kind so managed to just cruise along at a decent pace the whole way.

Chaps, you're getting in way too early. Should have come in with me just now: I've just stopped sweating. It was SCR from the moment I left the Park to Blackfriars Tunnel.

  • Very nice to meet you last night CJ.

And impressive speed between CB and AB btw - although there is a part of me that is relieved to hear it was hurting !!
I thought I should help out with some of the work, but the couple of times I got close to level I had nothing else to offer and just couldn't make the final leap. So, sorry about that, and thanks for the tow!

We split just before AB - between the small lights, and the bridge - I think you went one side of a bus whilst I went the other (as I then turn off up Oakley St).

For a friday this was great a very pleasing ride. Washappily bimbling along it till I went past a roadie at some lights... he then comes past so I stay with him upping the pace a bit, he shoulder checks drops a couple of gears and accelerates.. I stay with him he shoulder checks again this time double takes.. yes I'm still here. drops another cog and pushes harder I stay with him I feel absolutely fine we're at 28mph at this point he starts to slow ever so slightly and bam I increase a little more and zoom past him... I shoulder check and he's looking at his cranks losing ground..bye bye

so is that a scalp? he did me but then I crushed him at a much higher speed.. thoughts?

No SCR-like action at all for me this week. Must be riding at the wrong times...

I came in 30 mins earlier today. Did some exxtra miles in RP then headed out of the Park at the same time as another fast-moving roadie, immediately thinking that riding the extra miles was very bad idea.

No sign of the white-haired Giant MTB RLJer this morning, so I had to make do with seeing how comfortably I can keep a reasonable cadence up with the new 48-tooth chainring on the leviathan.

Answer: not for long. Those extra teeth will take a bit of getting used to.

Remarkably swift run in this morning, despite the headwind :) Nothing of challenge at all and as others have said, lack of cyclists on the road maybe? Even overtook a Police motorbike (not a CSO), so whats the FCN for that? It wasn't much of a scalp as he was going with the slow moving traffic...

Speedo in the post (apparently) so will soon be able to see what speeds I'm attaining. Wonder if it will arrive today?
  • I really shouldn't be SCRing yet, but my excuse is that fast is often the only safe way in London, and that last night, I couldn't resist.

Top of Kingsway/Southampton Row, a bloke in a fixie with really short-cut bars pulls up beside me, and gives me a bit of a dismissive look. Sure, I'm on a Brompton in suit trousers and oxford shoes, but don't dismiss me, dammit! I got away from the light well, and absolutely battered him, left him in my dust as I shot down that last 1/2 mile. He was 20 seconds or so behind me by the lights at the bottom, but he got the luck of the change and shot past me as I was accelerating from a standstill. No matter, I caught him again on the lights to enter the Strand, and easily binned him in actual competition. Dangerous filtering in the traffic approaching Waterloo Bridge put him back in front, but I reeled him in again less than halfway across and again put plenty of air between us, and again he made it up by diving inappropriately into the traffic at the roundabout. He went straight on as I turned right to Waterloo, but seriously, mateyboy, I did you over 3 times and you know it.
  • Bromptons are funny little bikes arent they. Sometimes I ride my 6 speed brommy into work (down the kingsland rd, down old street, clerkenwell, and then onto Kingsway) and other days I'll be on my Allez.

Anyway, a couple of weeks back I was going down old street from work on the Brompton and had been cycling just behind a young chap on a yellow fixie. Took a bit of doing as he wasn't hanging around, but I dispatched him fair and square. He clearly wasn't happy and did his best to restore family pride - but his lack of gears seemed to hinder him as he looked like a hamster spinning around in a wheel.

We got to the old st roundabout, and he pulled up alongside me and said "I've never seen a Brompton go that fast before". I told him, it's not about the bike mate, it's about the engine!

    Not sure he understood.

Last night was a bit hairy at times, what with the traffic after AB, wet, slippery red lines and a shoot load of leaves. As a result, when I saw a chap on a carbon Giant who looked like the real deal, I decided (especially with me wearing my hi-viz jacket) that these were not the condtions to try to upset the natural order of things.

Also saw that chap on the Merak riding in his trainers. He rode away from everyone at VB lights and took some genuine effort to reel him in.
