No, you only thought that as you were trapped in the time warp created by the vortex of my awesome speed.

I had a smooth ride in until a lycra'd roadie came past me and woke me up out of my pootle on the approach to VB. I didn't catch the jersey but it was a dark green with white writing. After a rather suspect bin lorry manoeuvre we had a quick chat at the lights immediately after PB, from which point onwards the SCR action kicked off. He technically RLJd by setting off before the lights had changed which just gave me a target to aim for. A quick overtake into the draft from a skip lorry seemed to wake him up as he cam past me as we were slowing down for the lights near Temple.

Nothing much was decided until we both got held up just before Blackfriars tunnel, where again he "anticipated" the lights, pulling out a lead before running out of steam at about 23mph. Now was my chance, full steam ahead to the legs and I wind it up to 28 as I breeze past him. I held that through the tunnel but hit a facefull of headwind out the other side and started to wind down ahead of my impending turn off. II don't think he was expecting the overtake but he must have worked hard to get back on my wheel as by the time I sat up he came straight back around me.

Honours even and my thanks for making the commute more interesting

    A song springs to mind...

Come on, come on, come on, come on

(Together) We will go our way
    (Together) We will leave someday
(Together) Your hand in my hands
(Together) We will make our plans

(Together) We will fly so high
(Together) Tell all our friends goodbye
(Together) We will start life new
(Together) This is what we'll do

(Go West) Life is peaceful there
(Go West) In the open air
(Go West) Where the skies are blue
(Go West) This is what we're gonna do

(Go West, this is what we're gonna do, Go West)

(Together) We will love the beach
(Together) We will learn and teach
(Together) Change our pace of life
(Together) We will work and strive

(I love you) I know you love me
(I want you) How could I disagree?
(So that's why) I make no protest
(When you say) You will do the rest

(Go West) Life is peaceful there
(Go West) In the open air
(Go West) Baby you and me
(Go West) This is our destiny (Aah)

    (Go West) Sun in wintertime
(Go West) We will do just fine
(Go West) Where the skies are blue
(Go West) this is what we're gonna do

There where the air is free
We'll be (We'll be) what we want to be (Aah aah aah aah)
Now if we make a stand (Aah)
We'll find (We'll find) our promised land (Aah)

(I know that) There are many ways
(To live there) In the sun or shade
(Together) We will find a place
(To settle) Where there's so much space

(Without rush) And the pace back east
(The hustling) Rustling just to feed
(I know I'm) Ready to leave too
(So that's what) We are gonna do

    (What we're gonna do is
Go West) Life is peaceful there
(Go West) There in the open air
(Go West) Where the skies are blue
(Go West) This is what we're gonna do

    (Life is peaceful there)
Go West (In the open air)
Go West (Baby, you and me)
Go West (This is our destiny)

Come on, come on, come on, come on

    (Go West) Sun in wintertime
(Go West) We will feel just fine
(Go West) Where the skies are blue
(Go West) This is what we're gonna do

(Come on, come on, come on)
    (Go West)

    (Go West)
    (Go, ooh, go, yeah)
    (Go West)
    (Go, ooh, go, yeah)
    (Go West)
    (Go, ooh, go, yeah)
    (Go West)
    (Go, ooh, go, yeah)
    (Gimme a feelin')
    (Gimme a feelin')
    (Go West)
    (Gimme a feelin')
    (Gimme a feelin')
    (Go West)

Okay... that was fun - but who the f*ck decided a headwind like that would be a nice thing after a monday!

Still - scalps ahoy and ello to the fast old skool racer who I met up with at blackfriars bridge and stayed with almost to the end swapping places. Nice pinerello - shame you had to rlj to ensure you kept your scalp - with calves like that you shouldn't really... Shame on your sir.

As for the rest of your wusses - if you draft a non-roadie say thanks you lazy gits.

First ride with the R500s today so was a bit careful over the first mile. Within 200yds I had a regular tick, tick sound coming from the rear wheel and thought it was the spokes bedding in. No, it was the cadence sensor and magnet making contact so I pull over and I got accosted by a drunk in a suit, not the usual type of drunk for my area of Brizzle, wanting a backie
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Saw a roadie with a specialized courier bag tonight. He was rapid. Maintained a 10 metre gap behind him. I was comforted, though, by his frequent shoulder checks and injections of speed when he saw the distance wasn't growing :D

He blew it by running the red at chelsea bridge.

My legs aren't working today. Stupid turbo.

Had a little to and fro with a guy on a carbon raod bike, he did me as my spidey sense was off, I stayed with him and then opened up when the opportunity arose. He caught up at the lights just before Bromley hill where I left him for dust... awesome

So there I am trying to keep things turned down to a simmer, so as not to make the whole week a grind. Nothing to bother me along the Embankment but a few RLJers, and one vaguely nippy guy on a hybrid after QTR roundabout (no chance, mate). Just settling in for a gentle cruise down the Dragstrip when Citizen Smith (although I didn't realise at the time) zips past, like a hybrid version of G66 - completely clad in red. At first I think, "oh it's just a hybrid; this shouldn't be too much trouble" but a bit of extra effort is just holding the gap so I grab an extra cog and start stamping to reel him in. We stop at the lights, then I take a turn up to the Trinity Road crossroads; I hang a left and CS follows - no let up yet. I turn down Franciscan Road. A quick shoulder check, and he's shaving the corner at some speed: "he must be someone from the forum," I think. At the end of Franciscan Road, we both pull up behind a BMW, and CS confirms my suspicion with a friendly, "Are you RJSterry?"

Fooph, thanks for the chase, I had to work for hard there. Chapeau Mr Smith. 'Til next time.

EDIT: @CP surely that would just give us less gifted with awesomeness something to aim for?

The ride home was rather hurty.....not helped by my stupid competitive side which meant taking it easy up Denmark Hill and College Road just wasn't going to happen, despite the protesting from my lungs!

The ride down Kingsway, round Aldwych and over Waterloo Bridge (lurvly surface now!) served as a nice warm up before hitting E&C and heading through Camberwell. Picked up a rather large shaved headed roadie on a nice carbon (I think) Scott. He certainly had some decent speed, just not quite enough of it :-) I eventually dropped him up Denmark Hill, which I did in 42*13! - there is something rather satisfying about overtaking on a hill at a lower cadence then the other rider

College Road proved a bit more arduous, not helped by a lack of fluids through the day and during the ride as I was rather parched and performance was slipping. I took the slightly easier route to the top as I turned off to continue following College Road, avoiding the nasty ramp up before the roundabout on Fountain Drive. Unfortunately my luck wasn't in this evening as the lights at the top by the Parade changed to green as I got there sparing me my breather :-(

An older gent on a Pearson roadie was my final scalp for the day before nudging just north of 38mph down Grange Road, rounding off a great first day back on proper commutes :-D

I properly scalped a Black dude on a Kharma last night, he was trying as well bless him. I hoped for a second that it was DDD, but the bike was white and I seem to remember his is black.

Bit damp this morning, at times it felt like I was swimming! One upside to this weather, asides from making you feel like a little kid again and getting weird looks off peds as I cruise past with a grin on my face, is that it removes most of the not-so-keen cyclists off the road onto PT. This leaves a much higher caliber (until you get into town it seems) of riding for the scalping!

Started off quite well chasing down a roadie on something rather nice, turned out to be a nice young lady on an even nicer Kuoto! She commented the weather was "good training". A careful ride down from Crystal Palace Parade and on through to Camberwell saw me pick off a few more people and it wasn't until WB that I had to open the taps really after encountering what could only be described as something of an anomaly, a rather rapid flat barred bike. I can't remember if it was hybrid or flat-bar roadie but with his speed I suspect he usually rides something with "proper" handlebars. The roadworks over the bridge meant I was hamstrung behind him until halfway over when he made a pass on a bus and I managed to sneak through with him, both of us held up by some dote on a Specialized road bike doing frankly silly speed...... Once the road opened up I applied the gas and went round but had him chasing me up Kingsway until an un-characteristic poor filter choice on my part saw him get a lead :-(

It was on the mildly moist side this morning. I was going to hang around at home until it past, but Carol on the BBC said it would rain all morning so I headed out into the monsoon anyway.

The rain stopped as I got to work.

My race with Citizen Smith last night has done my legs in good and proper, so took a rest/PT day to avoid crawling for the whole week. Will have to make up for it tomorrow. Given the weather and the fact that I still haven't had a chance to swap out those Ashima pads, I'm not sure I fancy riding brakeless anyway.

Can't say it helped. Got up; thought "Ow!"; looked out of window; caved in. Not proud of it, but we all have days of weakness. Even got called a fairweather cyclist by the builder this morning - that stung a bit. Will MTFU tomorrow.
