I haven't looked at this thread/forum for some time since I do not truly commute but today heading S over Putney Bridge at 1800 at modest speed in the centre of the middle lane in heavy traffic I was closely overtaken 3 times by cyclists; by close I mean that an indication of my pending move to the right lane would have imperilled the last of the trio - a fit looking bird. No, I did not give chase - there is probably a 40 yr age gap!

Is this how is out there? I have crossed that bridge on may occasions and rarely have problems with cars but cyclists are something different.

Don't remember the head gear but yes, white kit with yellow and green. The only writing I could make out was I AM down one leg and A WUSS down the other ;)

I'd managed to perk up on the way home and had fun chasing down a legging'd (in this weather!) roadie in a faded hi-viz jacket with tri bars. I passed him on the run to VB and held him off all the way to Chelsea Bridge. However, he filtered better than me and had an easier run when the lights changed. I gave chase and was closing him down when he turned off right, boo hiss. I was left with a hub-geared hybrid rider who I dropped and picked up like a yoyo. Fair play he was pretty quick and made a big effort to keep up all the way to Wandsworth bridge, catching me at every light but then falling back on the next run. He did the annoying "jump past the queue" thing at the WB lights so I turned up the awesome over the bridge and didn't see him again.

Day off the bike tomorrow and I'll be single speeding on Friday. I think I've got a similar 16/17 dilemma but for me its a 17/18 on the rear, although I can't remember the front cog

CP - Which part of Biggin Hill do you go down? Sorry if it's a silly question but it's one of the routes I've looked at having a crack at and I'm hoping I might get some "me" time on the upcoming bank holiday to go hurt myself, really need to get out on the bike as I've been off it for 3 days due to training and won't be cycle commuting all next week either.......

If I were you I'd loop using A232-A233(Biggin Hill)-A25 then back on either the A23 or A24(few more miles)

if you do the A25 westerly it's an easier way than if you reverse it and hit biggin hill after the A25 it's much more challenging. I think you'd like the hard way... do it, it's dead easy navigational wise so you wont waste much time, the roads are all pretty good and not that busy barring A23/A24

cheers, I think that is rougly the route I was considering! I've done the A25 from just before where Biggin Hill joins it (came down from Farleigh area)>Redhill then back up A23 which was fun. The A25 was a nice ride and just lumpy enough to not be to boring :-)

Might try and make it out round that was on the BH Monday......

I was happy to pootle in this morning when a rather short bloke on a red and white b-twin road bike drew my ire. He stopped way too close to my bar ends at Stockwell which was just the impetus I needed. Destroyed him after coming out of the S-bend on the way to Kennington. He caught back up at Oval red lights while I was waiting behind a car and nearly rode in to me as he changed his line without looking. Destroyed him again for good measure and he was last seen cycling down the pavement to get past a bus that was stuck in traffic.

Bloody lovely ride in this morning, no wind - heaven! Nothing of note, plenty of "all the gear" roadies again who I barely notice now.

Tuesday night I had nothing and shamlessly tucked behind a couple of quick roadies - but we were well ahead of the main peleton all the way from VB to Battersea Bridge. A whole load turned up and filtered to the front at Chelsea Bridge, only to make the usual hash of getting away from the lights. If you can't use clipless peds, go back to flats. If you aren't quick off the lights, don't jump the queue. If you've already been passed at warp factor 9, take in on the chin.

    How do I stop this?

My legs are so tired with cycling, running and spinning. I was supposed to pootle in today, but as soon as I see another bike I have an overwhelming urge to be in front of it.

I'm doing my first triathlon at the end of the month and obviously I want to take it easy in the run up to it whilst still avoiding public transport, but I don't actually think I'm going to be capable of doing that. :(

    There is no cure, sorry.

My pootle days are also quickly ruined by the sight of another bike in the distance, I'm like a dog chasing the postman.

So has nobody here spotted the handsome chap on the White Allez & panniers yet?

Strap all manner of mudguards, panniers, wicker basket, etc. to the bike, wear civvies and plenty of hi viz and push that FCN as high as you can. Then relax knowing that only CJCP on his Trikidoo can officially scalp you.

I wasn't sure what BNP Paribas was playing at - he seemed to think the VB lights were some sort of (slow motion) finish line and was weaving about dangerously trying to shake Reading CC off his wheel.

  • @ Asprilla : happened to me last night as well ...

Cruising down the bypass out of Bath determined to have an easy one and saw a hi viz jacket about half a mile in front. Far enough ahead to pretend I'd never seen it and to legitimately sit up and whistle nonchalantly and stare at the scenery ....

Red mist kicks in, legs scream and off we go again : took me about a mile to catch him and fair play he wasn't hanging around. A youngish chap on an Allez I think with tri bars. I led him up through lower Box before dropping him on the hill before the traffic lights (red) and he had the good manners to say thanks for the tow.

I find the most annoying thing about though is that once you've got your legs to explode out of their half life you have to keep it going all the way home.

18.4 average into a bloody headwind over 26 miles : I am seriously f*cked this morning.

To answer your question. SCR is just a bit of fun and if you look at the rules on page 1 it stresses safety and respect for the rules of the road. Dangerous overtaking/ RLJing etc is explicitly banned. Not everyone who goes quick posts on this thread and many seem to be ignorant of the rules and draw a fair bit of derision (see the comment about the riders in BNP Paribas and Reading CC kit just after yours).

I was following him through the DSC and he was weaving a bit then, too, and frantically looking over his shoulder. I was patiently maintaining station until a safe passing gap opened up in the traffic so I could get on chasing down the somewhat more rapid chap in the QuickStep shorts...

Sorry I didn't spot you Roastie. May be at CP next tuesday. All depends on whether I get the headset on the planet-x sorted and how many endurance miles I get in over the long weekend...

JonGinge - That was me in the quickstep shorts. Riding a blue ribble winter hack and black On-One jersey. I do Parsons Green to CW each day, and for once in my life I left work early. I dont usually hit the race track that early.

I met the Reading CC and Mr BNP coming up through Blackfriars. Both RLJs numpties and you are right, Mr Reading CC was so low down on his bike.

I also came across a guy on a Scott I think with deep carbon aero rims, but I think he was in trainers and wore baggies over his lycra. I cant remember seeing you though. I need to pay more attention.

Aha, all the details match. Greetings. :D

I don't normally leave that early, either. I was mostly chasing due to my lackadaisical filtering style. We swapped positions on the run up to Chelsea bridge. You outfiltered me at the lights and I got stuck behind the aforementioned chaps until the traffic cleared so you were long gone, I guess. Good riding, sir.

I was on a gun-metal grey Pearson, black cap, FdJ jersey and white shoes (natch).

WRT endurance miles: yes, well, ahem. May be lacking those, too, at the moment. April mileage has been way lower than I planned. Hopefully, I'll catch up a bit at the weekend
