You've got asthma to contend with as well but perhaps use a filter/mask to actually assist warming the air up a bit before its your lungs... Not even a full one - the bandit for instance? I used to get lung freeze too - but not any more with the mask. Though my ride home felt very different post pub on friday when I could take massive breaths... Less traffic so didn't taste (nowt to do with being a bit merry mind).

  • Good luck on the op flamite, it seems to be the day for it....

I almost forgot about a high end scalp I took on Friday night. I had been out for a few beers with the guys from the office and it must have been about 7pm when I set off. I sees this Dulwich Paragon rider in full winter gear, all matching, tights, long sleeved jersey, overshoes - the lot. I was just in shorts and a short sleeve jersey. Not only did I humiliate him by scalping him in one easy move, but I made him look like a bit of a jessie by wearing all that cold weather gear.

You need to take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror before getting dressed up like that mate. If you're going to wear your club colours then at least attempt to keep up. Good club with a long tradition that, you don't want to give Paragon a bad name.....

Good work Roastie. I used to get the same affliction on cold days, not at all pleasant.

    +1. Good work, lad.

  • Actually, a nip of neat Whiskey is perhaps the best way to get rid of the real freezing lungs. I found this out after getting a hip flask for Christmas one year and taking a sneaky nip whilst walking the dog.

Stuck on the M4 on the way back from Swindon - accident somewhere around Slough/Maidenhead-ish. :?

Yeah, perhaps the mask is an idea... I did have my buff over my mouth and nose. It is just weird though - I haven't had issues before. For the last two years I ran cross country in winter (let alone SCR) and haven't had problems. Hopefully my GP will have that referral letter ready for me and I'll be able to see the specialist pronto.

I wear a buff thing too. I've been on the inhaler this weekend and this morning. It seems to occur when I'm getting/have a chesty cold.

Unless the mask is heated is it really going to make a difference?

Can do. It heats up the air just enough to take the sting out of it.

  • Buff's are likely too thin to make much difference though the extra thickness of the bandit would i'd bet.

Don't forget your lungs are still a bit nadgered from your chest inf too...

nice hip flask btw - I got given a rather neat one with collapsible ring based cups too... for that extra ponce value :D

The buff actually works pretty well, takes the sting out. My guess is my current problem probably has more to do with the remnants of that stupid infection.

I must say I am hesitant to use a mask as I have read that they can simply serve to aggravate the tendency to catch chest infections as they capture viruses and other germs, and then provide a nice warm, moist environment to breed. Hmmm...

I reckon I probably need a symptomatic inhaler...

Masks also cause my glasses to fog up, which is a bit of a problem when I want to see through them.

Sounds silly but I chew gum, I find the mint helps with the breathing, when its really cold I apply vicks on the chest and maybe the throat the help keep the airways open.

A true scalp is not only overtaking someone but leaving them stopped at a set of lights. As you, who have clearly beaten the lights, pummels nothing but the open air ahead. ~ 'DondaddyD'. Player of the Unspoken Game
  • you got the ports facing up at all? I used to have that problem and worked out the best angle.

I am said to be 'extremely' susceptible to chest infections cos the drugs i take but never noticed an increase or extension of their life with using a mask. Your lungs are more than capable of providing an awesome breeding ground laden with warm moisture etc - a mask will do little to aid it.

  • Fruitless chase on the way into work. You know when you've got nothing in the tank at all and then on the horizon a cyclist appears enticingly through the morning mist and from nowhere you find some hidden reserves .....

Coming from the lights at Box about 800 yards in front I spot a Specialized Tarmac and the outline of a Red Specialized jacket. It's far enough away for me to pretend I hadn't seen it but tempting all the same ......

So ... for 2 miles or more I am going at it pretty close to flat out and just as I'm getting within touching distance he takes a right at a roundabout as I plough on down the by-pass. It's only at this point I realise he's one of the guys at Total Fitness Bath and he was just cruising while I was having a mild coronary.

I figure if I give it what little I have left along the by-pass he'll get clogged up in traffic through Batheaston and I can scalp him by default into Bath itself. I get to London Road and he's nowhere in sight ahead so I've won - I sit up - at which point a blur disappears down my outside as I'm trying to get past some lorries onto the cycle lane on the inside and the chase is on again.

800 yards later we arrive at the lights by my office together : offically a draw I reckon ..... except I looked ready for casualty and he looked like he was out for a picnic .....

I'd like to report how I whipped an Allez rider four times in succession despite him sprinting away from each light to try to get away - but sadly the main event tonight was every SCRers nightmare - being taught a lession by some mask wearing dude wearing baggies, long sleeved top and baggies and riding a trail hardtail on big volume knobblies.

I wish I could claim asthma, but sadly not. I'd burned the tanks dry on Allez boy, and paid the ultimate price. My scalp. :(

My lungs/chest felt bad this morning, not too sure why but I put it down to being a little overdressed for the slightly warmer than expected weather in Brizzle, had tight SS top under a baggie SS top with arm warmers, plus I've only managed single figure mileagesin the last 10 days

On a moreserios note: had a car pull out of a garage forecourt into my path depsite the two Tesco torches lighting my way, she missed me by 2 foot but the arm waving and verbals as I pulled alongside her made her stop in the middle of the road as I dissapeared into the traffic ahead.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Fast pace tonight, helped by a great tailwind.

Came up against a couple of roadies and one SSer on a Condor on the NKR, and it was the SSer who was the faster of the three, so the two roadies were dropped. Picked up a couple of other roadies with ther SSer on the south side of the Putney Bridge. One turns off quickly to the rier; the other is an older chap I've seen a good few times. He's properly quick. Seemed to filter quicker than the others on the LRR so lost them. Pants. Queen's Ride could have a right speed fest.

All quiet after that, but felt wheezy coming through Petersham/Ham Common. Not as bad as Roastie, but not good. :?

    Say it with me!

“The power of Awesome compels me!”
“The power of Awesome compels me!”
“The power of Awesome compels me!”

New rule, unless safety demands or I’m riding with others, my bike will no longer drop below 20mph! It doesn’t need to for THE POWER OF AWESOME COMPELS ME!

I don’t know why but as I got to Oval I hit Clapham Road with Passion, Hatred and Thunder. This being a road I recently topped out at 30mph, it's not something that should be taken lightly. OK let me explain the source of my fury; yesterday I went to a metal gig to listen to a band called Forever Never and Karnivool. However, as I walked in there was Skindred, as a surprise warm up act! Man I love Skindred so much I struggle to find the words to explain how much I actually do, you could compare it to the love I have for Karen... After their set II got the lead singer to sign my album and gig ticket. Anyway…

So, fuelled with the fire of metal I hit Clapham road with all the thunder my thighs could bring. Honestly, I’m dropping people left right and centre, hybrids, mountain bikes with guys that spin, spin spin, single speeds and other roadies - An unusual amount of free moving bikes even for this bike-commuter heavy road.

So, I’m going with the cars whilst singing and for a brief moment I come to my senses from my 'delirium of speed' and I have a little chuckle because too be honest I really couldn’t believe I'm taking that many people.

Eventually I collect a couple of people: a guy on a Tricross and a girl of a black white-kind-of-silver Specailized female drop handle road bike (Dolce), silver clipless shoes, white sock, green top, shorts with a red decal, hump hi-viz covered rucksack, brown hair, about 5’5, small waist and tight body hoisted atop two very sizable legs which comprised of the most shapely and the most beautiful thighs, calf's and ankles I’ve seen (except for my girlfriends), I'd like to call her Melanie. We’re going back and forth with me dropping them and then getting caught by the lights. This is an constant certainty until Balham drag strip where I drop them good, proper and out of my existence.

However, a series of safety precautions and they’ve caught up to me. The guy turns off and it is just me and Melanie heading past Colliers Wood towards South Wimbledon.

“Oh so back in Clapham you were just taking things slow...”

She finally lets me see what her thighs can do as she rides her bike to what will eventually be (in the near future) a joyful death. Her pedal technique hypnotic as she doesn't miss a beat as she spins away on her inner ring and small sprocket to hold a perfect and sweetly constant 20mph.

“You go girl!” I find myself saying under my breath.

We plough past South Wimbledon where I eventually turn off towards home and she heads on further up Kingston Road.

    I wish we were friends…

    They're feisty these fast hybridders.

Had one getting a free ride at 26mph this morning for the length of chelsea embankment but the drag up millbank shook him.

Had another take up the challenge this evening. I blasted past on col de putney bridge, more to get a decent sling into the right-hand lane than for the overtake. I went primary and stopped at the first RLs on the bridge. FH2 stayed in the bus lane and bypassed the lights. Green. Tailing a slow 4x4 onto LRR I eventually get some free space and spin up. I take FH2 again but he's doing about 25. I stretch the gap but traffic slows me down a couple of times and he's chasing. I eke out the advantage along barnes common but again have to slow for the lights. I finally shake him in the lead up to barnes pond. Chapeau, sir.

Saw a fully castellied-up SSer on chelsea embankment. He looked a bit hot in full tights and an espresso jacket, though
