I thought it was supposed to be head wind home this evening. Or not. Flew home.

Unexpected tailwinds are the best :D
I had a 30 mile tailwind Sat it was lush and almost took my mind of the pain from outbound 30 mile headwind

whats Richmond Park like as i am in Brentford next weekend and hiring a people carrier and if its big enough in the back (rear two seats) i might throw my road bike in for a Sat morning ride.

working in Morecambe at the moment and got totally soaked to the bone riding back last night around 7pm the rain off the sea was like Hail bloody knacked my face lol

If you are in Brentford, I would ride to RP, it isn't far at all. Easiest way is over Kew Bridge, head past Kew Gardens and through Richmond.
Certainly quicker, roadworks on Kew Bridge at the moment.
Don't expect the park to be cycling Nirvana though; it often seems to be a bit of a zoo at the weekend. Imagine a mixture of cars doing 18mph (because their speedo reads 20) and other cars doing 30mph, and then add cyclists of various speeds from 12mph to 30mph and more. Some of the faster cyclists will get stuck behind the slower cars and either bunch up or try to overtake; some of the cars will get stuck behind slower cyclists. Expect to spend quite a bit of the time following cars. When you're not stuck behind a car, watch out for oncoming cars swerving onto your side of the road to overtake cyclists. If there are deer around, cars will occasionally just stop in the middle of the road, with no warning, so that their occupants can stare at the deer.
If you can get there after dark it's a different world, because the cars get shut out but cyclists still have access. Just watch out for the deer; they don't know the Green Cross Code...

Blimey, where did that wind come from? A very unkind headwind heading uphill was very unpleasant today!

Seems I was 6-8 minutes behind you according to Strava, you should have been level pegging with Hopkins though,,,

Although I have uploaded 1,974 rides on Strava over the years totalling 70,000km I still have no idea how you would even work this out...

Once I'd gone through a foggy RP, it was a lovely morning. Took the nice bike into town to make the most of the dry roads. Annoyingly had to stop and slightly raise the saddle, which does have a tendency to slip every so often, but other than that all was pleasant. No real SCR to speak of.

  • Well into the second week of no bike because of LBS shenanigans! Seriously now considering an n+1, can feel myself starting to slowly turn into a train zombie.

    'zackly.

In other news yesterday was my first day on the bike for 8 days. My lower back went into spasm Thursday 23rd. This happens about every 18 months for me from a combination of too much cycling and/or gardening but this was the first time it's happened from sitting in my home office all day.

Still it was sufficiently recovered plus my legs were itching to get back on the bike for a mild, dry Friday morning in January.

Had a little bit of SCR on the false flat up to Westferry Circus in Canary Wharf and thought I would share it with you via the medium of moving pictures.

I thought I had positioned myself perfectly for the sprint finish but ultimately left myself too much to do to catch red bootie/pink backpack/squeaky mudguard guy or (whispers) perhaps he was just faster than me #sillycommuterracing

Textbook timing through the lights at the start. I seem to get caught by the lights at the top of the ramp every time at the moment
I sometimes take the route over and down the other side, or, if I'm feeling crazy, take the Flanders-style route underneath, and up the other side.

Is it Canary Wharf Management who are responsible for the state of the roads around there? Whoever it is, Christ alive...

The traffic was so bad (ie very normal) along Cable Street this morning, that a scooter decided that the best thing to do was hop into the westbound CS3 lane and tear along so he gave himself the best chance of making the lights.

  • Chillier start to morning than I was expecting from the forecast last night in the Southampton area, -2C in Botley and closer to the city the "feels like" temp was approx -2C.

Hopefully everyone stayed upright this morning!

Fog in Richmond Park for us, but don't think it dipped below zero (although I'm no longer an early bird like some of the folks on here).

On the subject of RP, there's a woman who drives a black Maserati through there and leaves at Roehampton Gate. Saw her in yesterday's fog without her rear lights on, and suggested she put her rear lights on.

Saw her again this morning. Still no rear lights. Told her again, and suggested she learn how to work the Maserati.

God, I'm in a bad mood this morning.

(For those wondering, the Maserati is black, not hi-viz.)

Social ride in with abfg, more or less from my front door (well, my daughter's school gate 400m from my front door) to the office.

Bit chilly, but I was well wrapped up.
  • Top sociable commute and glad to show Hopkin's daughter than random people in lycra shout things at her Dad in the street.

Yeah, was -1 degrees when I left home so would have been colder than that in RP itself.

Yeah, seen that a couple of times. It's the wild west down there (and the timings of the lights are screwed at the moment)

It was -3.7G in Bushy Park, so probably a little below zero in reality. Need to refit my rear tyre, I think it needs another layer of tubeless tape as it seems to lose pressure in a random fashion.

What about meteor strikes? I mean, one wouldn't look out of place along that stretch, tbh. It's the sort of bat-sh!t stuff I'm coming to expect.

-5.5G for me in RP approaching the Beverley Brook Bridge just after 0700, meaning a reliable -3.5C, and the feeling in my ear-tips confirmed it!
