Did a handsome stranger on a Paddy Wagon take point 300M + of the Lambeth Bridge Junction, do you ride a Specialised jobby with red wheels?

I don't think it was you, no. I did pass someone else on a Specialised with red wheels either yesterday or Monday, he was taking it very easily at the time, so I didn't claim it as a scalp. I'm on a black Boardman, normally in a grey top and flourescent (sp?) rucksack.

I'll keep my eyes peeled next time

No need to duck - no shame in demonstrating your lack of taste... actually there is, shame on you.

I came across another Bowery rider last night (fnaar). A rather lovely blonde number outside the Imperial War museum. She was pushing what appeared to be a massive ring and had calves the size of Chris Hoy's. I hung behind her for a bit then took her at the lights, not sure if she was playing though, I reckon she'd have given me a run for my money if she was. On that basis, I'm claiming her scalp.

The wind last night and the big chest embankment train of pain made me reavaluate my gearing strategy as by the time I got home I had jelly legs and was crying.

    Emotional sharing time

I swapped my 16 for an 18 cog (using my miche cog carrier jobby it took but a minute) and went from 79.1 GI to 70.3 (48 teeth up front)

    Spinny leg bliss.

However, by the time I got to work i was in danger of drowning on my on sweat......

Had a great race with someone on the way home last night - he got past me as I was stuck in a group but I caught him and stuck with him all along Clapham Rd/High St until I passed him at the common, but there was never any air between us the whole way though.

Got my average speed up +2mph on average just through charging after him.

70? Seriously... you must have been creating vortices with your legs ablur.

I'm torn on the whole gearing thing.

I'm running out of legs way before my lungs are warmed up and just think I'm pushing too hard running on power rather than fitness.....

I have an imperfect understanding of where power stops and fitness starts.......

I'm going to try the WGWGWGWarbuton (Buns) school of hyper spinning and have a look how it goes.

Also I'm getting a pain behind my right knee that I'm being carefull about, too much man action may have me popping a ligament and getting it trapped in my running gear at 25 mph.

  • I actually find my knees get worse if I spin too fast for too long (in spinning classes for example - not a huge issue on my bike).

It's the extension/flexion high-speed repetition that gets my knees, especially if I'm spinning so fast that I get lazy and start overstraightening.

Ram it the lot of you. It was windy last night - I got winnowed out as Chaff and have become a girly man.

Well let us know how you go!

Maybe we're all numpties with our big gears and Buns-style spinning is in fact the way to go.

Can't see it really making any difference into a headwind though.

Do you have a computer on your bicycle? Would be interesting to monitor your speed.

I run a 48-18 despite the ring race here... I use it to improve my spinning, it's working... I'm faster on the road bike

Due to some recent modifications in the ITB stable I have a couple of questions for the panel

    1. Define team kit, for example campagnolo jersey team kit or not?
    2. Where do you draw the line on faux SS and tarty SS?
    3. SS & Fixie surely they should not be classified as the same FCN?
    4. Wrap around glasses, just how far do they need to wrap around to qualify?

    1. Define team kit, for example campagnolo jersey team kit or not?
Yep this needs clarifying. I move to class proper bike kit - Campag, Assos, Castelli as Team, and commuter kit - ie Endura, Altura as non team. Not sure where this leaves Rapha and Swrve baggies though.
    2. Where do you draw the line on faux SS and tarty SS?

Faux is the sort of Meedja/Hoxton type bike - ie one bought with tarty accessories already in place. Tarty is a standard SS that has been personalised by its owner.
    3. SS & Fixie surely they should not be classified as the same FCN?

    Why not?
    4. Wrap around glasses, just how far do they need to wrap around to qualify?

    All the way round.

I think Rapha and Swrve should come under team - especially Rapha - any company that advertises itself with massive logos on the clothes deserves to be under team. Mind you, I've not seen Swrve baggies with blatant branding. Maybe Swrve escapes into commuting gear then.

+1 on the rest. Maybe not the sunglasses.

    I am properly EXCITED.

my little bro's housemate has been dabbling in cycling. Him and his Dad have decided to tackle the 09 Etape. My bro is rugby mad and in fine fettle, however all my attempts to lure him into cycling have been rebuffed... until now! He called me on Monday night and is also thinking of doing the Etape so we're meeting for a drink tonight to discuss. Whoohoo, I'm gonna talk him round big time and convert him, perhaps a newcomer to the SCR is on the horizon?

Secretly I'm concerned that'll he'll be much better than I am though, he's much fitter and has no body fat at all... on the other hand he is very motivated in general so should help to kick my training up a notch over the winter months.

Fingers crossed, I feel like a missionary. Off to spread the word of the ROADIE now.

ohohohoh and it's the mighty Blues in the Champions league tonight so I get to combine my bro, beer, Chelsea and cycling into an awesome blend of awesomeness.

    Yay! :P

I thought team kit was professional or amateur cycling teams

campag clothing is just a manufacturer for example just as is briko or dhb... less pikey sure  but not that much different really?

oh and I thought SS is fakers teritory whereas a one braked fixed is the stuff ridden by proper loons (excluding artfag studos)

How did you calculate your FCN on the SS as zero?

    from http://www.citrusskies.co.uk/fcn

    +3 for proper SS
    -1 team kit
    -1 no baggage
    -1 wrap arounds
-1 Evidently Clipless/spds (cancelled out because of starting class
