  • I rarely frequent this thread, I'm a pretty rant-free cyclist... However, last night, I was cycling through Port Seton on my way home. I was travelling on the main road, it's still a 30 zone at this point, and there was a pair of cars waiting to come onto my street. They were very patient, waiting for me to battle the headwind I was facing. This made me incredibly happy.

Until a motorbike went past me, travelling a minimum of 100 mph. Never have I been more surprised or scared by anything whilst commuting. The thing was I didn't even hear him coming until he was alongside.

I wore my other tights this morning.

Haha fair play guys, about 5 mins after I posted that I just went out anyway, both bike and I are filthy, it was fun though, and when I came home I had a nice parcel waiting for me :D This is definitely an anti-rant post :P

Dear Dozy Bint who knocked my bike over,

Don't say "It wasn't me". I WATCHED you smack into it with your pushchair, which you clearly can't control. Take into account you were the only person who it could have possibly been, and the fact that everybody else clearly saw you.

Take some damn responsibility, and apologise.

just had to move desks at work and now sitting in the part of the basement right under the skylight so I get to hear the garbled noise of every conversation across all three floors of the building even with my headphones in.

add to the fact i'm also sitting in the dark as the guy behind me has 'sensitive' eyes so the only strip lighting that throws any light near my desk is switched off as it shines in his eyes and blinds him.

so now I can't concentrate on the code I'm working on thanks to the incessant noise which means I'm reading the same line about 6 times and the eye strain of focusing on the screen in the dark is giving me serious headache. not a happy bunny.

edit: the suns not gone down fully just yet so I still get 'some' natural light from the skylight but my screens/keyboard are already in shadow....

    darkwh.jpg

this morning I was in a nice quiet spot, working hard getting my code ready for testing on monday sitting under our nice new SAD lighting bulbs (which had a noticeable impact when they were added in terms of my overall mood/energy levels in the office) in one fell swoop thats changed to putting me in a foul mood, have pretty much given up on getting any work done for the rest of the day and now have a pounding headache.

    6pm cannot come quick enough.

Ah, that's annoying. Same as you I need peace to concentrate fully on coding. Don't get much of it in an open-plan office.

I've been meaning to try out those SAD lamps for a while...

I've just been told to take a note of something that will need developed when working on a project in the future. My contract is due to finish on Tuesday

At a guess this means I'll be asked to stay on (again), probably on Monday the day before I'm due to finish (again).

As much as I like the fact I'm getting some money in, I am getting fed up 1. not knowing when (if) this contract will actually end and 2. being asked the day before it is scheduled to finish if I will stay on another month.

A good time to ask them to extend by 3 months instead of 1 as their last minute planning is hindering your ability to make your own plans?

Yeah, it's poor form and poor project management. They (should) know ahead of time whether they'll need you but you've every right to have already found other employment for next wednesday onwards. You may need to preempt this situation by asking the question ahead of the next renewal.

tbh I don't want it extended by 3 months, I want to finish it. The longer it goes on the more I'm reminded why I quit in the first place (working for the company I used to work for). But it's kind of stupid saying no to work when I don't know when I'll get more.

I actually meant to ask this week Jon but I bloody forgot

Honestly don't know whether this should be here or in "Anti-Rants", but I waved a scooter into the bike lane on the NKR (just the other side of Stanley Bridge), this evening, and he waved "thanks" and I felt slightly pleased with myself. The traffic wasn't great and he was sort of marooned, the poor chap. Makes you realise that the problem isn't the scooters, but the sheer number of cars on the road.

To the mensa candidate in the passing car as I was heading up towards shooters hill with my triathlon group this morning the answer to your incredibly taxing question "what are you doing!" which you felt compelled to shout from the vehicle as you went past looking extremely pleased with yourself is...

    running.

  • Why, despite having SO MUCH TO DO, do I procrastinate making coffees and mooching around on internet forums?

To the girl in the silver Pug 206 at Jacobs Wells roundabout. It isn't no good tooting your horn in complaint at the car that nearly hit you, if you weren't on the mobile phone you would have been in full control of your car. Obviously phoning your friends is more important than paying full attention to the road.
The pavement cyclist yesterday must realise that you need to anticipate when on the road and even more so if you do the deadly sin of pavement riding. The ped you were following moved into the middle of the pavement to avoid the seats outside the caf and she walked into my path which is why I moved to the outside of the pavement and left you nowhere to go on purpose which made you drop into the gutter. The snotty look you gave me meant sod all, you were in the wrong not me. Perhaps all peds should walk in the road for you?
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

My alarm didn't go off this morning! I woke up at 07:17 to a flashing LCD display that said "NO CD"!!!! FFS! This left no time for breakfast, and as a result I almost lost my scalp this morning on many occasions.

Been too many "can't be arsed" weekends when i did not ride this year.

Bloody paid for it yesterday when my legs blew up in the middle of nowhere half way between Chesham and Gt Missenden. i.e 30km (as the crow flies) away from home

Had to limp back to Chesham and let the Met take the strain

Could be worse. I woke up to the wife saying "it's quarter past 7" this morning, to which I replied 'so what? it's Sunday'...

Not a good start to the day.

If you just would stop posting about procrastinating then it'd take me less time reading yours when I'm procrastinating and I'd not feel the need to respond, wasting more of both our respective times (does that even make sense?).

I also have homemade stuff for lunch, nom nom.

To the car on platt lane, thanks for blinding me with your full beams it made my morning trying to negotiate the next 50 yards of dark lane with a corner coming up and being unable to see sod all at 25mph.

To the first delivery driver of the day: Me and you are going to fall out if you continue that attitude for the rest of the week. You might want to take note I am much more relaxed after my cup of coffee and that although I'm laid back and slow to temper it doesnt mean i'm a push over and I know all about your job cos i've been dealing with pillocks like you for 15 years.

to 95% of the people I encountered on my commute in this morning you are all *******

saw pretty much every inconsiderate/thoughtless action that can take place on a 6 mile journey across london.

extra special shout out to the two separate bus drivers who were using their indicators the wrong way around. (signal right to pull in, signal left to pull out). you both damn near squashed some idiots trying to filter past in accordance with your signalling and while they were fairly good darwin award candidates on their own your actions would have robbed them of their accolade by putting the largest degree of blame upon yourself and not them.

Grrrr, the company have just banned bikes from the CCTV monitored, key card access controlled basement that us cyclists have been using for at least the last year. In place of this we have a cage with a flimsy lock down a dark alley the building shares with a pub. Full of fag ends, with no light, no CCTV and a lock that would break in a stiff wind. The company have invested in a bike rack that doesn't allow for attachment through the frame, so any bikes stored in there will not be covered by insurance.

Gah! At this rate I might end up having to leave my pride and joy at home and commute in on the hybrid. :(
