The estate in front of me guns it to try to make the lights. Wisely changes his mind at the last minute leaving him straddling the stop line at the end of the ASL, blocking the rest of it completely.

He then not so wisely decides to start reversing without checking his mirrors prompting warning shouts from all of the cyclists who had pulled up behind him due to the blocked ASL.

Looks really angry that we had the audacity to warn him to prevent him from flattening us.

Then my De Niro eyes went down reaaaaallllllllly badly

Rant - Appears I picked up the garlic bread and plain pizza leftover box, not the tuna & olive and Hawaiian leftovers box.

I once caught up with a car on a particularly quiet M6 toll and it was swerving from the hard shoulder to the extreme right of the motorway for no discernible reason. Then I realised she was splashing through the puddles at the side of the road at motorway speeds. I had stayed well back trying to figure out what was going on, once I realised I waited until she swung left for the hard shoulder and put my foot down to make sure I was ahead of her when she had her inevitable accident.

 Only begins to describe that sort of driving. I've had a car aquaplane on me in a straight line before in heavy rain (thankfully caught by the ESP before I even had a chance to react). Can't imagine trying to do that deliberately as it was scary enough as it was.

If I pull the trigger on a Zwift setup, I need to buy a semi "gaming" PC... The thought of installing a copy of Windows on a machine in my garage just to make some neon "gaming rig" fills me with ennui... WTH can't they just make it work on a console? Probably looking at about 1500 quid (including the turbo, natch) just to bore myself silly.

Bah. It's summer. I'll stick to riding my bike for a bit (anti-rant)

We have sheffield stands in work and I use the left hand side as my pannier bag always goes on the right, sometimes the stand and side I use is taken. There is a very good reason why I use the stand I do and that's cause it's covered by the CCTV camera.

What's everyone's view on jumping red lights?
Whilst there is a system of rules in the UK which regulates the actions of its members, I believe one should follow these rules at much as possible, but there are situations where they don't necessarily have to be followed religiously. Whilst the law in the UK is pretty fair, I don't believe its perfect for each and every situation.

For example: doing 30+ in a 20 past a school is not acceptable in my opinion. Doing 100+ on a motorway when there is no car/lorry in sight is not problem, in my eyes. The driver caught doing 100 might get his licence confiscated, whereas the driver doing 30 will probably just rack up some points.

Similarly, on the whole I believe one should stop for most RL's. However, I don't see the harm in jumping lights at a pelican crossing when there are no pedestrians crossing! Big junctions in London, are a completely different story, but I'm just talking about very small junctions/pedestrian crossings.

How do you stand on this matter? Do you also wait for the crossings because some child pressed the 'stop' button as he walked past? If you do religiously follow RL rules, do you also cycle on roads where the cycle paths are so poorly maintained (tree-roots poking through the tarmac surface/ potholes/tears)? I highly, highly, doubt it. If you do I would love to see you try to take my local mtb track or as my council likes to call it: a 'cycle path' on your way to work. but that's a separate rant altogether..

So why is RLJ such a sensitive topic?

Very keen to read the wrath in your rant.

I don' jump lights at all. If I'm riding on the road, then I obey the rules of the road, that includes stopping at lights, even if there is no one else there.

There are no laws that say (as far as I know) that you have to use a cycle lane if there is one there, I think I have a right to use the road. If it's a decent cycle path, I'll certainly use it.

I stop and listen to the jaunty beeping noise even if the crossing is empty. I use persistent red light jumpers as interval training if I'm in the mood, catching them up and telling them they'd get there just as quickly if they were fitter and faster. They tend to think I'm a dick for telling them that, and they're probably right.

Though prowlbass from round these parts got comprehensively wiped out by a bus after he stopped for a red, and the bus didn't...

My biggest fear too, I had a bus mirror miss my head by a few inches cause of this and I wasn't going fast either.

When hipsters jump red lights all the time with their flip flops and earphones in putting their lives at danger, is when it becomes an issue.

Cyclists get a bad enough name, the least we can do is follow the rules on the road to keep ourselves and others safe.

Rick has called out this junction many many times, and for a good reason. If there was a cycle box at the front what we saw in the video would not have been an issue.

Is it just me or the lorry driver stepped down on the gas shortly before hitting the guy? From the position of the cyclist I can't believe the driver did not see where he is. Instead, he decided to accelerate.

This could have been much much worse...

That's why I always position myself in front of the traffic on this junction, much safer to assume a primary position instead of sitting in the left lane.

Of course, there is a separate thread for this...

Oh.. its that video. That junction has been a fuck-up forever. I'm not touching that with a ten foot pole except to say that 99.999999999% of the road 'incidents' I encounter are caused by the operator of a large, fast metal box being unwilling to delay their journey to the next set of traffic lights by <10 seconds and in fact preferring to put at risk the well being of someone who isn't them for this perceived but nonexistent advantage. This is the state of humanity right now.

I now watch that program about people who live in the middle of nowhere in Alaska surrounded by bears and hundreds of miles of wilderness and think to myself "You lucky, lucky bastards - if only I had the courage to do that.."

Everyone who sat in the left turn only lane and went straight on is to blame in that incident. The lorry driver has some culpability but for crying out, it's your own lives you're playing with when doing that.

No, I'm sorry but I have very limited sympathy for the cyclists in this case. Poor, poor judgement there.

There are loads of people in videos online, unbeknownst to them and without their permission. Helmet cams, dash cams, cctv...

Not ideal, but unless you're one of the lads going straight on from the left turn lane, then I wouldn't worry about it.
