Being stitched up at work...
If you'd like me to mix a show I'd like a sound check and a technical rehersal BEFORE the full dress rehersal!
Also expecting me to mix for a set of speakers I can't even hear is virtually impossible!0 -

Also, how long does it take to switch phones?
Orange upgraded me to a new phone (Galaxy S3). Good deal. Registered to swap the number over to the new phone. Was told it would take 24hrs, which I already thought was taking the p!ss.
It's been 36hrs, and the phone people just tell me to be patient.

Why are you so loud?
Why?
It is an article of faith among a certain crowd that loud exhausts are more noticeable and therefore safer.
For others it's just that they felt the need to run a non road legal race can for that extra 0.3 bhp, shaving whole milliseconds of their 0-60 time.0 -

That's obviously bull. I can hear normal motorbikes fine.
Anyway, all loud motorbikes are only loud when they're either pulling away from the lights - (after they've pushed to the front anyway, so that is pointless) or when they seemingly randomly put out those ridiculously loud gunshot esq pops that serve no purpose other than to make everyone think the rider is a massive tw@t.0 -
Rick,
Shouldn't you still be basking in the afterglow of new bike pleasure and hence too mellow to get riled by a rorty 'bike or two?Location: ciderspace0 -
The pops and bangs are from the throttle being suddenly closed from fully or mostly open. There's momentarily too much fuel going into the engine, combustion can't complete by the time the exhaust valves open, and so the still-burning fuel exits through the exhaust with a pop/bang. You can get the same thing in cars but generally only in a much higher state of tune. In principle it is something that can be tuned out with no loss of performance, but tends to be left there by manufacturers because people buying motorbikes associate the noise with high power race bikes.
The other alternative is that they're riding something with a quickshifter, which cuts the ignition spark on gearchanges, meaning the rider can shift with the throttle fully open. In that instance there's still fuel pouring through the engine which isn't being burned until it hits the hot exhaust.
Away from the lights it generally means someone is acting the tw@t, revving pointlessly and/or giving it the beans off the line.

Argh, how hard is it to get a job in the North West at the moment?? Not sure what the point of working in IT is if I can't just wander into any organisation I like a four weeks' notice and I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever manage to leave the south at this rate...0

I've been looking for the past two years for something on the M62 corridor.
As much as I like Brighton I'll never be able to afford to buy a house here...0 -
My first post in my first week of a bike commute! (and already I feel the need to rant)
In my head it was a 12 mile round trip, sunshine, wind in my hair, birds singing, glorious views and happy smiling people, happy that I'm riding my bike.
The reality is the world is full of drivers who don't give a sh1t and pedestrians who either don't don't give a sh1t or want to tell me how to ride my bike. Crappy English weather, lumpy roads and proof that I'm not as fit as I think I am.
Oh well, I'm still keen and it certainly has its moments!0 -

Bloody hell, that's not good. Same here, people are so keen on Brighton it's impossible. I'm moving up because my OH is doing a PhD at Liverpool Uni, but one of the big side-benefits is I might be able to buy more than a bedsit...
So, anyone in Liverpool/Manchester/Chester/Birkenhead need a senior Windows sysadmin?0 -
My first incident with a car! He was parked on the right hand side, and joined traffic but did not bother to look before making the manoeuvre, cue a shout from myself and right knee into his front wing..
Took details from him and a lovely witness, luckily no damage done to bike just to myself, bruise on knee..0 -
Also, people who filter on the right hand side of traffic.
Hint. If you can stand still next to a car and not get hit by an oncoming vehicle, you can cycle past it too.
Stop blocking good filtering opportunities.0 -

Is that like when drivers pass cyclists with mm to spare. They didn't hit them, so what's the problem?0 -

If the cyclist doesn't want to cycle into oncoming traffic, that's absolutely fine - just don't stand into oncoming traffic instead! There's 2 lanes of cars to the left of him where they can stand still as much as they want!0 -

My Dad's experience was somewhat quicker He called me at 11am but I missed the call so called him back at 1pm and went straight to voicemail, 3pm he called me back to say he's on his new handset.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0 -
absolute nightmare journey back home last night, puncture in the middle of blackfriars underpass in the middle of traffic, err what do i do, tried to ride to the end, but had to walk last section to a safe spot to change tube. Get going again to find wall to wall traffic from whitechapel to stratford, had to pick my way through, got past ilford and then nearly got taken out twice in the space of alf a mile by drivers crossing junctions and not looking. Battling headwind all the way home, reach train station to find i've missed my train by 40 secs and had to wait over 25 mins for the next one.Sorry its not me it's the bike ;o)

Politicians eh?
I wrote to my MP a while ago, possibly about the Times cyclesafe campaign. In the exchange of letters and emails me being punched in the face while cycling (and the police's not too draconian response) was mentioned. I got the typical "we're spending XXXX on bikeability training for kids" blurb so I made the point that (having read Cyclecraft) I was riding how a Bikeability trained person would ride when I was attacked, and I was attacked because I was riding like that rather than staying within 3 inches of the kerb.
I basically suggested that teaching kids (and adults) to 'take primary' without teaching drivers that they're allowed to do it or why they do it could lead to conflict. My MP said that my concerns would be forwarded to Mike Penning, and they were. I got his response the other day.
He takes a page and a half to say:
1.) Kids are taught Bikeability, not Cyclecraft.
2.) We spent lots of money on the "Think [motor]Bike" campaign, isn't that enough?
3.) Drivers are educated about how cyclists should/can ride because lots of local councils offer Bikeability training. Some of the people who take up this training will inevitably be drivers as well as cyclists. So drivers are being educated about it.
So point 1 doesn't mean anything and is just dodging the question/point.
Point 2 is irrelevant.
And I'd be surprised if the drivers mentioned in point 3 are the same ones harassing cyclists for riding 'in the middle of the road'.0 -
