  • Background : I normally drive part of the commute as the roads are deadly for cycling and there are no alternatives that dont add 5 miles+

Left wallet @ work by accident. Get home, no fuel in car. looks like I'll be cycling the whole way then. I wont bother with strava as my times will be rubbish by comparison with normal.

Naturally this resulted in me running into someone of a similar pace and alternating drafts on one of the most popular segments... would definately have been a new PB. even if it is not exactly in the spirit of it.

Also how does my 16.5 mile commute take only 5 minutes longer by bike than by car :/
  • effing headwind last night going home, did it just die for a second no, all the way a constant wall of wind. This morning being called a stupid c***t for taking primary around ilford before the north circular by a bloke a inch from my back wheel
Sorry its not me it's the bike ;o)

Yeah my commute - 25 mins cycling 15/20 mins by car pending traffic. Although thats not factoring in faffing around time getting ready for the ride, packing bag, checking clothes match, bum looks okay etc...

My rant... did a big ride out last weekend, spokes have started to come loose since(!!) resulting in the back wheel needing aligning. Bike is almost new so will be leaving it to the shop to repair + my repair skills are rubbish... downside, they can't do it until NEXT Saturday... *sob*

Hell no! a37 straight up to bristol. Theres a proper squeeze section where hgvs have to slow to a crawl to avoid bumping mirrors on a savage hill. By the time youve made it through there traffic is desperate to get by. Follow it up with another pinch point - traffic island, people do lethal manouvers to get by. Even this morning where I was on the tail of the lorry in front of me I had someone pass me dangerously at the pinch point.

Solution : mash pedals up the hill to prevent traffic taking liberties.
Downsides : lungs on outside by top of hill.

Sounds like the climb out of Pensford? Thought about going cross country into Saltford and cyclepath into Bristol?
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Oh snap! I was just about to post that; my wife had a couple of years of commuting into Brizzle up the A37 and was certainly doesn't miss it when we make the occasional foray.

  • That is indeed the spot - I ride in from Paulton then leave the a37 at whitchurch on to the cycle paths

The saltford route is a viable alternative and ends up about the same distance as I work in fishponds, it just involves a smidgen more navigation which I didnt want to deal with today :)

Fuck John Lewis. Fuck them right in the ear.

9 months after one of their drivers pulled out in front of me they have refused to pay out and apparently thier witnes says the accident was unavoidable. How can someone pull out in front of you and it be unavoidable?

What he said. Have you already gone legal? Don't know the details, but if he pulled out the accident wasn't unavoidable. If he hadn't pulled out there would have been no accident, therefore it was avoidable because he must have pulled out not knowing you were there.
Failing that they will be delivering our new bed next Saturday. You can have the driver to do with as you wish, but only after delivery.

It's not just cyclists; my wife and daughter #1 got the "you don't pay road tax" abuse from a motorist who had to back down to let them pass on horseback, despite her explaining that it would take longer for them to ride back up.

When I suggested that she might like to note and report the registration, she said that it would be hard to claim fear & distress when daughter was giggling about his whining & my wife's rebuff. Crime of Horassment, anyone?

Before leaving today I got round to putting a smidge more air in the rear tyre to prevent pinch flats.

This guaranteed that I ended up travelling through a mountain of glass, giving it a nice puncture. Then I bent the valve core on the replacement tube in my hamfistedness. Joyous 3 mile push the rest of the way. Also I need to arrive at work later, there is a fine young lady who travels that way about 10 minutes after I do currently.

Felt good this morning the wind blowing the right way for once. So was going to try brake my 30min for 10 miles. Well everything got in the way. First roundabout felt like forever for the cars to go past. 100m down the road the pedestrian crossing light went to red not a car in site. Stop and wait for one man to cross. Off I going again another traffic light goes red. Know I off clear run for the last 7 miles and going for it. Get in to a small town one row of house and a car pulls out in front of me. Ok he got enough time to more before I'm on top of him and he stall the car so had to slow down. Well got to work in 31min. Will have to try some other time

Got out of bed the wrong side this morning.
    Forgot sunglasses
Nearly got sideswiped twice by the same antiquarian driver.
Work shower has lost pressure and it was like having a shower under a crappy tap and when I report it they say it's fixed. But it isn't.
Someone has stolen my bowl and I had to eat my cereal out of a mug.

Bed frame was in the clearout. £500 to £199 as it was the display model. The matress was considerably more, I daren't look. It's taken us 2 years to take the plunge and spend that much on a matress. Saying that I'm really looking forward to a good kip Saturday night.

Just discovered: worth checking. Providing you ordered within 28 days (I think) of the price drop, they'll give you the difference back. Just need to ask.

Not saying it will be in the sale, but if it is it sounds like something bike related ;)

ordered a tonne bag of ballast an cement from Huws Grey (building suppliers) i asked for a am delivery the day before. It turned up at 15:30 yesterday

driver pulls up on the grass verge outside of house, gets out of cab an walks over to me -

i say "generally drivers back up over there so they dont drive on the grass an churn it up"

driver "is that what your expecting me to do"?

    me "Yep"

driver shrugs his shoulders, huffs then drives across the grass, drops the stuff then drives back over grass, turning it into what looks like the Somme.....chicken fecker!

Why does nearly every London bus now indicate to pull out whilest still taking on passengers? I feel I am left with no choice but to never give way and always make the overtake - stuff 'em.

Because the first 5 cars* will ignore the indicator and overtake anyway, so they pre-empt it in the hope of being able to pull out when they need to?

Was driving yesterday when I saw an ambulance coming the other way driving erratically; swerving from one side of the lane to the other. When I got closer I saw that the driver was reading something from a clipboard held on the steering wheel, paying barely any attention to the road. I assume that as the other guy was in the cab too they didn't have a patient on board, and he wasn't on blue lights.

C'mon FFS. You've scooped up enough dead people from roads to know it can go very wrong very easily. Do better.

What's worse is he was alongside a long, well-sighted lay-by where it would've been easy to stop.
Really deeply annoyed me, that one.
