Richmond Park 3-lap Challenge - 2008

Yep I hear ya Jon,
Went out this morning too but didn't get out there till late, but have to say best conditions I've ridden in so far.
Unlike my previous ride I at least got lucky in that whilst I got held up by traffic it was mostly in the uphill sections where other bikers were slowing down cars, and not the fast downhills.
Subsequently shaved over 5 minutes off my my last time, although only up one spot. :shock:AndrewBye....................3laps/anti........75kg......52:07......Feb

5 minute improvement. Great stuff!
Moving up the board just adds a little more incentive and you are closing in on a few. Next time...
My aim is to get closer to the likes of seabadger and BrianMc but it may take some time (and a lot of effort)0 -
Thanks Jon,
My initial target is getting under an hour. Still quite a few more rides to go for that as my knees still not 100% after surgery. As an example I still can't power up the bottom hill (near Kingston) without dropping to bottom CR which for me is quite frustrating.
Also can anyone confirm what the distance is over 3 laps? My GPS is coming up with a little over 32 Kms, but it's an old unit and I'm not confident that it's that accurate.
Cheers
Wilf

According to mapmyride it is 6.74 miles per lap. That's 10.8km.
My cycling computer just about agrees with this. So you're more or less right.0 -
Blimey - go away for a week and times start tumbling!
Bit of a frustrating time of it tonight. First time I've attempted this for a few weeks and was gearing up for a ride all afternoon (when it was sunny) and just as I was putting the kids to bed, the rain arrives and the wind picks up. Pants. Decided to go out anyway and then realised I'd forgotten to take my inhaler so my chest tightened up on the first lap (done a lot of dusting this weekend as builders are in) and managed only 18:54 for that lap, and then gave up on the second lap just after Robin Hood Gate because I just couldn't get enough air in the lungs and wheezed my way back to Kingston Gate. Will try again next weekend.
Have also been away for the last week and done no exercise whatsoever (but coupled with eating a fair amount of ice cream and pie ) so I'm hoping the coming week's commute (and less of the pie ) will give me a bit more zip.FCN 2-4.

Knocked just under 1m off my previous. The wind was in the right direction this morning (NE) but a bit too strong at around 12mph making it hard on the last anti stretch from Dark Hill to Roehampton Gate. No change in position but I'm definately knocking on the "power hour" door now, though

Awesome job Mr Wheeler!
I also took advantage of the mild night to head down for a spin. I broke my record at saturday and did a 70 mile ride on sunday so I didn't really think about setting a time. However, when I arrived I couldn't help myself and I managed my first sub 20 minute lap. I actualy had a Kingston Wheeler on my tail for a minute or two on but he dropped me sharpish at the hill near the south gate. I then paced myself on him from about 50 yards back. He provided great motivation for me but I couldn't get close enough for a tow.
My second lap was also under 20 minutes and my final lap was 20.03 for a new PB of 58:59.
As you can imagine I am delighted. I didn't think that I'd get near 60 minutes before the end of the summer. Got to look for another target now.

Wow Guinea - 3 1/2 minutes off is pretty amazing. Well done indeed. As you have just jumped me the gauntlet is truly down 8)
Looking at Metcheck this evenings' wind is absolutely ideal for an anti lap - 4mph easterly. No wonder the times are tumbling.

Yep, excellent conditions for quick laps.
Without pacing myself, I managed to be super consistent:
1) 21:01.6
2) 21:00.7
3) 21:02.8
Took 3:26 off my best time.

Well Done Guinea! I bet that feels like a milestone! And by quite a margin too.
I can't find your wife's order by the way, I expect she thought she'd have more time to save up. What colour Shamals is it? We could have a nice presentation in the RP Cafe.
Also well done Kingston Wheeler, modestly beating Andy Bye. I'm waiting for my new bike before having a crack this year, can't believe the times are so low already.0 -

I'm afraid I never got round to it. Rowing training is underway and takes precedence. Seeing as I have been out of it for a while the rowing will make a big big difference. 13 sessions a week must do my times some good when I come back after henley. So I'll get back on in mid July and let you know how I do. Hopefully 52 minutesish considering how little training I was doing to get the recent times.
yes pretty much. not least of all because after a week and a half of uni training I have lost half a stone.0 -
Quite windy and completely dark on the final lap.. but good to leave room for improvement.
Do you guys use standard roadbikes or is there some aerobar / deep-section wizardry going on too?

Heh, she was more that a little surprised that I'd done it already and thinks I set her up.
I'm off to France on Sunday for a crack at some alpine hills. If the weather is decent I may have a crack at Alpe d'Huez. I wouldn't mind getting a pair to take with me though. If you have them in stock and can get them to me quickly with tyres and tubes I'll have them.
What colour? I guess it'll have to be titanium. I think you have to be a better cyclist than me to get away with gold.0 -
Sorry KingstonWheeler.... Saw you had upped the bar a bit so went out to the park on a mission to get the top spot back... and came away with a new park pb for me.... Only the second time this year i've been out in shorts, went into the park about 7pm so was reasonably quiet with the traffic, perhaps only losing a handful of seconds slowing for junctions / cars / deer.

that is one hell of a time by andrew bye ... i have not had a go this year but won't get near that.
if each lap is 6.8miles, i make that ime equivalent to an average speed of 25.1 mph
was that done with any aero equipment ? it is a very good effort even on a full TT set-up and nearly pro-level on a standard road bike.0 -
Awesome stuff. What more can I say?
KingstonWheeler,
I joined the wheelers in march and have been on a few clubruns (including the winter wonderland of a couple of weeks ago). I've been thinking about taking the plunge and entering my first RR at the grand old age of 35. Any advice would be more than welcome
Jon0 -
Sub-49 mins. Christ alive.
JonGinge - a fellow Wheeler here. I did three of the Hillingdon races this winter and did better than I expected. Would have done better if I'd used my noggin a bit more. Anyway, I just try to keep a high pace as often as possible on the commute into and out of the Big Smoke every day, and hammering it around RP for three laps will do you no harm at all. KingstonWheeler and some of the other faster guys in the club also organised a race training day at Hillingdon last November, a couple of weeks before the start of the Hillingdon series. It was invaluable, which probably suggests that the best training is racing itself.FCN 2-4.

nice ride chaved legs. very classy. build list please.
andrew bye has put time into all of us here. my aim is to go sub 50 on my TT bike one day but that is pushing it as my only effort to date was 53.05 on a road bike.0 -

Yeah, I use the pro2 tyre and like it, so might as well go try the pro3.
I can do any night this week or saturday/sunday morning. I have to leave London by 0930 at the latest on sunday to catch my ferry. I had already planned in an early morning ride on both days. I still need the mileage/fitness.0 -

I did a fairly fast three clockwise laps on Tuesday night (nice to see K Wheeler out in fine form going the other way). First time I've really pushed the pimped out, white Look 595 and it's working well. Broke my PB for clockwise laps this evening at 52:58.
PS Who is the Irish gent in the casquette and Assos top who's out almost every evening going anti? He and I have been nodding sociably to each other in the Park for the best part of five years...
