    It's been a long time since I've managed to get any training into my schedule and even longer since I've been to Richmond Park.

    So after a week of fantastic weather I snatch some time on Sunday. In the rain and wind, I should have known since it was the Wimbledon final but hey.

    If the weather wasn't the problem then the traffic would have been, there wasn't much of it but but what there was dawdled and seemed to park at roundabouts (can you be lost in Richmond Park?)

    Anyway I got in my 3 wet laps - 53.18.

    45 seconds off the time - just got new pedals and shoes which ive never used before so should be interesting to see if a) they improve my time b) i can use them without falling off everytime i come to a stop.

    Went out on Friday to find the wind not in my face (for once) and knocked a minute something off my previous best. I thought I was doing well to take 6 weeks to knock nearly 3 minutes off my first effort to my current time...until I see others knocking huge chunks off/aiming to knock huge chunks in a fraction of that time. Oh well...time to train harder!

    Went out on Saturday for 3 laps of the park after several races and sportives to see how much I have improved...a strong head wind for 2 sides of the loop and traffic made me work for a 2.30 time saving. I've been a bit lazy in the past few weeks so blame that for not making a bigger dent in my time.

  • Do you people who do Richmond regularly find that a still day generally gives rise to a better lap time? My aerodynamic knowledge isn't good enough to work out whether a wind helps and hinders in equal measure (i.e. makes no difference) in a circular loop, or if stillness serves better. My instinct and experience reckons wind can push you up a hill but, climbing the lee side, can't really push you down much, so maybe windy days are suited to one direction on the loop? What do you regulars say?

    What a great and inspiring thread! I have just spent about 2 hours reading the whole thing, and decided the take the plunge and register!

    I am already commuting 20 miles daily to and from work down in Devon and have been doing so for a couple of months, my fitness is coming along. The best thing is I am moving very close to RP in July, so I hope to see some of you out there when I get riding some time in Late July/early August. I have the green light from missus for a new bike too ;) I will post a time as soon as I can.

    Oh and Pink Steel - air resistance quadruples for a doulbling of speed (i.e. speed squared) so it is definitely an advatage to have no wind, or if you do have wind then try to make it in your face on the slower parts i.e. the climbs (I think you reasoned this anyway)

    On an anti clockwise loop I am far faster on an east wind.

    When the wind is coming from the west it adds a lot of time on the stretch to Richmond Gate, if it's bad it can mean a 13mph grind. On an easterly I travel at 20mph+ all the way up that drag including the hill at the end.

    I've never had no wind at all. Only been about 50 times :)

    This is a great thread! I saw last year's version and living in Putney had been meaning to pop over to the park to see what time I could do.

    So I had a go today around lunchtime on my singlespeed. Probably just about the worse choice of day/time ever what with all the Sunday traffic and a sponsored ride clogging up the road anti-clockwise between Roehampton and Richmond gates meaning I changed direction after the first lap and did the last two clockwise!

    But I managed a 58:47 anyway and as I was aiming for under an hour am happy with that. I'd hope to shave some further time off when there is less traffic. We'll see!

    Well on my way to a cracking time, first to laps in 32 mins, but held up badly by cars on the final lap for a 51.10.

    Not really the cars fault as they were held up by large group of cylists.

    Excellent ride Alex. Aren't you gonna put yourself on the list? I was confused by your blog. "...I know riders who enter 2 races a week, I'm 1 every 6 weeks. This makes it very hard to accumulate points, I got my 40 to make 2nd Cat in 5 races. I now need 40 points to stay there. I can't wait and play the game for 1st place. If I can make certain of 6 points early in the race, that is what I'll do..." You're already a 2nd cat you don't need an additional 40 points to stay there. But next year you'll need 25 points to remain a 2nd cat :D

    Oh Dear. I hate climbing. I can deal with it on the first lap, and even the second, but the third I just capitulated, my flat speed is pretty level all the time, but I lose a good chunk of time every time there is a steepish section i.e. up to richmond gate, and the hill by kingston. Guess I'll need to shed some chub.

    Cheers James, I figured the TT bike would be cheating, I even swapped my Cosmics for handbuilt wheels. Plenty of time for the podium to change again.

    Toks - that's good news, panic over. May relax a little in races now. If you have any 2/3 Cat races lined me now, be good to see you.

    I'd put my time up but I'm embaressed about my weight at the moment. Too long out of training and the Nutella diet has produced the obvious results. I should get another go at the challenge this week.

    Which way is faster to go along. I find kingston to richmond gate is easier than roehampton to richmond i.e. clock vs. anti. However, the hill beside kingston is the real issue, you can get a long rest and speed going down that hill on the anti route, but if you go clockwise, you have to stop for the busy roundabout/to turn. Any thoughts?

    I reckon the fact that everyone chooses anti is evidence enough that it is the better route

    The advantage of not having to do right-hand turns must surely outweigh any benefits of the clockwise route

    I guess that assumes that people will be doing laps at a time when there may be other traffic around that risks causing delays at the roundabouts

    I've not done late evening runs and had heard that the police were often out with their radar guns at that time...

    For me, anti clockwise is about a minute a lap quicker.

    Best conditions are with a slight wind (5-10mph) from the east. As someone mentioned above, there's never no wind.

    I've heard there's no traffic early morning, but I'll never be up to find out for myself. Generally there about 7pm which is not so good. Sunday afternoon seems the worse time.

    Does anyone between 55 and 50 minute mark do runs around richmond park. I'm pretty much doing the longest and simplest distance around, on the yellow track at the moment. I just have nothing to gauge my speed against since it is so hilly picking out pace per mile is irrelevant. I'm trying to see which I'm better at as well, since I used to do a lot of cross country at Primary School, but since then its just been rowing. ATM P.B. 48:30, after running 24km the day before. I looked on the internet but cannot find anything to gauge this against.

    I almost always ride clockwise because I just prefer it that way (after a vicious crash on Broom Hill years ago), but am pretty certain that anti- is faster; for two reasons:

    It's just a slightly shorter distance (because you're going around the inside of the road), but much more importantly the roundabouts are far easier going anti. You can take them faster and you're less likely to have to wait for traffic.

Others thought anti-c/w was harder.

    I'd be well pleased if I did 48:30.

    Surely anti is quicker due to the amount of braking you have to do.

    Think of the three main roundabouts.

    The one at Richmond is approached by flat/uphill from both directions so requires about the smae amount of braking either way.
    At Roehampton the roundabout is approached at the end of a mild descent clockwise so you have to lose a little speed there - but not much. Anti clockwise is pretty flat.
    However, at Kingston anti clockwise you approach from flatish; clockwise you have just done the steep descent, and so have to bleed off lots of speed. That is where you lose time on the clockwise loop.

    (The roughly equivalent height loss on the big hill on the anti clockwise has the lovely runout where you can carry through sspeed to RobinHood roundabout and beyond.)

    I was so much so I thought I'd do 2 laps next time, did 53 minutes and 57 minutes, oh dear it was painful. Am feeling it today lol. Its just when you get 1/4 way through the 2nd lap, your thinking, why the bloody hell did I do this hehe.
