Shaved a little bit off my time tonight with almost perfect conditions. Only got slowed down a couple of times, so the only way to improve on this one, I think, is by getting fitter... Godammit... Still, look out AndrewBye...

Well done. I went round clockwise last night, and the wind seemed to be against me 90% of the time - was trying to take it easy, so glad I didn't have a watch on otherwise I'd have been tempted to give it a go anti...0 -
Haven't timed myself on 3 laps but I'll try next weekend - are the timings for solo runs only? Sorry if this has come up before but it's a long thread!0

Timings are indeed meant to be for solo runs, but I appreciate it can get so busy in the Park (I blame this thread) that it's not always possible to avoid slipstreams 100% of the time.

the other thing that makes this 'race' a bit invalid is that, on the very odd occasion, when the police aren't out with their speed guns, you can't help but sit behind cars at 30mph most of the way.

Yeah the best time to go is dawn or dusk when no one is about, but frankly I have never really benefited from drafting on any of my laps.
I have only been on a race bike for a year and only really been doing cycling properly for a few months and I am comfortable doing the speeds I am at in the dry, if it is wet I don't bother I just go for a run instead.
Why don't you get on your bike and put the pedal to the medal. I'm going for it and I've done the 3 laps full pelt only half a dozen times if that. I'm sure if I can get in the 53 minute bracket in that time with my weight people can go much faster if they have been cycling for years.0 -
Having been out of it for a while with both physical and cycling malfunctions I'm back.
Just not getting out there earliy enough to avoid traffic and wind (seems a bit calmer in the mornings), as back to back rides I missed my best by 30 seconds, going up sawyers hill into the breeze last lap was a killer.
Also just adding to the last post, agree with AmateurDC but will add two points:
1 - Can only speak for myself but never thought of it as a race
2 - I suspect some of the brilliant times are in main not due to extreme and dangerous speeds but rather consistency over the course of 3 laps and in particular maintaining speed up hill. (Something I'm currently struggling with)

For an anticlockwise 3 laps (starting at Roehampton gate) what gears are riders using (to go under 55 minutes) for...?
A) The flat sections (Ham back round to Roehampton)
The small climbs (near Ham section)
C) The rolling/false flat sections (Roehampton - Sheen/Richmond)
I would assume:
A) 53x13
53x23
c) 53x17
Also, what kinds of speeds in KPH would you need to average for each section.
Perhaps:
A) 45kph
20kph
c) 35kph
Would be interesting to hear what you all think. I am aiming towards the 50 minutes and below!0 -
I thought about having another pop at this today, but on the ride up to the park the weather (mainly the wind) was a little too breezy. I started on the anti-clockwise lap, feeling like I was getting blown towards Roehampton sideways up the first part of Sawyers Hill. Anyway I was feeling pretty good so I carried on, and was quite surprised that I took two and a half minutes off the previous best (well not that it was a huge yardstick to judge myself by as I have lost 6 Kgs since then!) total time 64.25. I only wish I had given it a little more at the beginning as I felt like I had more to give. In fact I did as I went round another two laps before calling it a day - I would love to break the 60 minute barrier on the mountain bike before getting the road bike...

I had a run out today, but quite possibly one of the worst days. Very windy + very busy, given that it was a bank holiday. Actually came to a standstill about 7 times + stuck behind slow traffic. Cars should be banned from Richmond Park in my opinion. First two laps were okay, but got fed up with the conditions by the third (i knew I was wasting my efforts) and so cruised round. I didn't measure my time properly, but it was still under 60mins. I could definately deduct 5 mins for traffic, but hey i'll try another day. I think on a good day I would aim for 53 mins and below.0

It's been a while since I hit the park. I've been a bit busy recently and couldn't spend as much time in the park as I used to. I've been putting in a fair bit of time on the turbo instead. Couple with some intervals on the mountain bike I was hoping my fitness hadn't dropped.
I've just booked a trip back to the alps with my brother so I wanted to head down to RP to see how much my time away has cost me.
There was a fair bit of wind and traffic tonight, so I wasn't expecting much. Still, I gave it everything I had. The hills seemed harder, I wasn't flying up them like I used to, but I seemed faster on the flats.

Yes those times are quite compressed in the middle. I guess thats what they mean by a 'normal distribution'.....(which I guess makes me subnormal )0 -

I felt inspired after work today so attempted the 3 laps of destiny in my first timed attempt. Despite doing this in rush hour I got a virtually free run round. Fair bit of wind again and that hill is still killing my speed. Still, I beat the 60min barrier with a respectable 58mins on the nose.

Well this thread has gone a little quiet, so this should bump it back up to the top. I gave this another pop today as the weather is frankly, lovely and the wind was not too strong and blowing light westerly.
Anyway I have bettered the PB yet again by a fair chunk, but was very frustrated as I wasted a fair amount of time with slow moving traffic and with queues at the roundabouts. I am sure the magic 60 is possible, I think I just have to pick a quieter time though not tomorrow as its the duathlon which they are setting up for today...
p.s. some of the more observant among you may have notice I have lost 9kgs.. thats a whole bike weight to not have to lug up a hill a d they are so much easier these days....

Went out on Sunday for the first time in ages but couldn't get any sort of consistency - too many cars and too many trucks/vans putting up barriers, etc - so no change in times.
Given the quietness of the board re new times I thought I would pose a question or two...
1. Has anyone else come across the phenomenon of passing someone on a lap only for that person to jump onto your wheel and sit there for ages, not taking a turn? At a suitable point the person on your wheel will sprint past, usually at the top of a hill, while assuming a look of haughty indifference only to then blow up/get tired /couldn’t be bothered pushing themselves and slip back onto your wheel?
2. Is this a Richmond thing or a wider issue?
I only ask because I’ve never come across this before and Richmond is the only place in the UK I’ve cycled!!
It’s happened a fair few times to me over the 3 months I have been going to the park and it can be a little annoying particularly pulling in the wind. No issue with someone sitting on and doing bit and bit even if I do the majority of the work. No issue with someone sitting on to recover. Really annoying when someone sits on and gets a tow for most of the lap and then acts the idiot.
Best one was when I passed someone on the descent towards Kingston Gate (going anti). I have seen this... both ways in fact. I have tagged onto someone who seemed about the right pace, but also tried to do a share on the front (difficult on a mountain bike as its like riding into a brick wall at road pace- much easier behind someone). Having said that in my more effort orientated sessions I have had people hang on my wheel and then move in front without looking to see if I am following.2. Is this a Richmond thing or a wider issue?
Dunno... haven't ridden anywhere else to see what its like... I will let you know..

Finally decided to give this ago tonight - normally just go round at my own merry pace without timing myself. Was pretty pleased with the time and it was a good evening for it quiet, still and not too much traffic for the first lap and a bit then the gates were closed.
Still not sure whether the TT bars are making a difference as I think the increase in spped on the flat / downhill is offset by what I lose going up.

No issue with someone sitting on and doing bit and bit even if I do the majority of the work. No issue with someone sitting on to recover. Really annoying when someone sits on and gets a tow for most of the lap and then acts the idiot.
Best one was when I passed someone on the descent towards Kingston Gate (going anti). He sat on and coming up to the last tree on the side of the road as you get to the turn for Dark Hill he sprinted out, threw his bike over the (imaginary) line, sat up and waved his arms in the air like he had won a stage in the tour. Then waited for me and back onto my wheel. Towed up Dark Hill and sprinted off over the top off that as well. Another session of arm waving…
Anyone else experienced this? Anyone else know what the story is? Presumably throwing a water-bottle at such individuals would be considered bad form?!?!?

2 laps at medium pace this evening put me at 42:30 - my last recorded time was 70:46 and my previous unofficial time took 7mins off of that so I reckon this week I could go sub-60mins! 8)0
