    At last a sub 60mins. What was the secret ? I think the early start, the only traffic was other cyclists. I did a tryout 10 mile TT with my club the day before and posted a 25.05. I am thinking of entering a proper one now. Whats the verdict on clip on aero bars ? they must help or people wouldn't use them, after getting a carbon frame I don' t think I can justify a new TT bike and they seem a cheaper option.

    A PB on a nice cool evening with nothing in the way of a breeze to impede a cyclist with a large cross section. Also a PB for an unassisted lap at 21:35.

    Managed to fit 3 laps in today at about 10.30 and broke the hour mark :lol::lol::lol:
    And the first lap was a p.b. too at 19:12.
    Traffic wasn't too bad and only problems were being stopped at roundabouts a few times. Also this is the first time I have tried it on my Pinarello which is a standard road bike (no tri bars yet). I have recently started doing club 10s so might invest in some soon.

    I was down for a spin before work. I didn't ride on monday or tuesday so decided to head down at 0600. There was no wind at all and very little traffic. I managed a 58.45 - but no PB. I've now got under the hour in my last 6 visits, but no PB.

    I then did an extra three laps which I completed in 64 minutes before heading home and commuting to work.

    In a moment of madness I've decided to go back tonight for another 5 or 6 laps. if I do 5 laps that will put my day's mileage over 100 miles. I am planning on doing the same thing tomorow if the legs are up to it. I've never done back to back centuries and I'm interested to see how my body copes.

    Shocked to cut 1.5mins off my time today, with 3 laps below 19 mins, so maybe 55 is in reach after all.
    Great wind today, but a few traffic delays; I reckon as you get incrementally faster, and the police get tougher with speeding cars, so the chances of being held up are increasing.
    Next attempt should probably be a weekend at 6am.

    Really impressed with your perseverance, Guinea. The breakthrough will come, probably all of a sudden.
    By the way, I think you said someone helped you lift your bike out a few weeks back; I'm pretty sure that was my club mate Rob Reid, who excitedly told us about someone's weight loss exploits, and I thought "where have I heard that before"? There can be only one, surely!

    Hi - I am new to this forum, but have been riding round Richmond Park for the last seven years, so I have probably spoken to a few of you over the years.

    Thought I'd have another crack at three laps this morning and improved on last year's pb by 2 minutes 9 seconds :D

    Traffic wasn't too difficult and it was just that bit warmer and less windy than the last few days.

    Was going well tonight, right up until the nice policeman stopped me for breaking the limit. He was a fairly reasonable human being although I nearly laughed out loud when he confided that 'sometimes you cyclists even overtaking the cars...'

    One lap later as I leave via Kingston Gate, a Kingston Wheelers rider is involved in a reasonably serious looking physical altercation with the same police man, whose 4WD is straddling the pavement. My guess is that someone tried to make a break for it... Don't do it KW, that lap record isn't worth the time!

    Hi everyone

    Took 2.5 minutes off my previous (and only) attempt tonight in almost perfect conditions. Thought I was on for a real screamer when I saw 17:00 for the first lap but I must've been going too hard -- the second and third laps were 17:32 and 17:38. I had to slow down a bit to avoid being sick :( Still, very pleased that I got under last year's time.

    Awesome times, AndrewBye and Superlightweight! I don't think I'll ever get close to them.

    Got down RP tonight for a big session on the new TT rig. Traffic was fairly light, wind not a major problem. I havent sorted a speedo out yet, so it was good old RPE and my stopwatch. First lap and a bit of congestion, 18.18. 2nd lap a bit clearer 18 dead....a pb was on the cards...Absolutely hammered the last lap and finished in 54.00. Delighted, but now i want 52.xx ....!!

    Kept overtaking a guy on a colnago on the flats, then he killed me on the hills. Was frustrating but i had a chat with him later and he said he came 150th in the etape, so i think he's quite good......!!

    Anyway, a good day. PB'd my 1500m swim time in the pool today and a RP pb tonight... :D

    If there is a crackdown on speeding cyclists, then some common sense and flexibility needs to be exercised and, if there are any policeman who patrol the Park and read this thread, I would be interested to hear the reasons for the apparent crack down.

    When you have weather like today, the Park is obviously extremely busy and all road users need to exercise caution. Overtaking cars is risky, and especially so when there's lots of traffic; IMO, the middle of a nice Spring or Summer's day is really not the time to try to set the road on fire around the Park because of the amount of traffic, and I rarely ride in the Park betweeen 9am-7pm on days like this for this reason.

    However, what about (a) the times before and after the Park is closed to traffic and (b) times when the traffic very light? Why should bicycles be limited to 20mph? We don't have the ability to accelerate as fast as cars (even if you're in the sub-50 min bracket - sorry chaps :wink: ) or the mass/weight to cause the same amount of damage as them at the same speed.

    There is a difference between riding fast and riding dangerously or recklessly and you can be riding at less than 20mph and still do the latter. I don't think it's the speeds on the descents which really separate us in the challenge we have going on this thread, but the speed/strength on the flats and up the two hills. So, merely, because someone is clocking 52.xx as opposed to 62.xx does not automatically mean that he/she is riding with complete disregard for the safety of other road users.

    Aside from the above, there must surely be in the interest of the Police outside the Park (and other road users, particularly given the different attitude to bike riders in this country compared to on the Continent) to have cyclists inside the Park rather than on the roads.

    Frankly, however (and I'm going off topic here), one of the biggest dangers in the Park to a cyclist travelling at any speed are those ridiculous wooden posts in the verges. I'm assuming that their only purpose is to prevent cars parking on the sides of the road. If so, if their putting up "20 mph" signs, what's wrong with "No parking on the verges" signs or even double yellow lines? If not, then I'd genuinely be grateful if someone could tell me why they are there.

    Anyway, back to the glorious thread that is the RP 3 Lap Challenge. I'm building up my race bike after stripping it down to kit out the commuter. I don't have fancy wheels (yet), but I can't lose any more weight without looking like weird and can't find any time to train, so, if I don't get below 54min in the next month, I'll have no option but to throw money at it if I want to go faster. :)

    Especially as the reduction to 20mph was to reduce roadkill of deer being hit by 1-2 tonnes of metal.

    Just got back from a few non-challenge laps. Saw a jam sandwich circulating. Also saw the "cyclists 20mph" at the bottom of Broomfield hill. Ridiculous. The only dangerous thing about that descent is when car drivers ignore the double solids and overtake...

    They stopped me at the bottom of Dark Hill (I usually go clockwise). There was nothing ahead of me, and it's pretty hard NOT to do more than 20mph on those little descents. Policeman's reasoning was 'if something pulled out in front of you it could be dangeous', which seemed a bit lame.

    The really risky behaviour is when I overtake cars on the drag between Kingston and Richmond gates, or on the descent from Richmond to Roehampton gates.

    I agree with Mookie and CJCP and although the Cyclists 20mph signs are new, the police attention isn't.

    My guess is they will be quite heavy on cyclists for a few weeks to emphasise the new signs and then get bored/move onto something else - there is a periodic crackdown on motorists too - many of whom exceed 20mph right now.

    There aren't many places for the police to hide, so unless you fail to keep a watchful eye, it ought to be fairly easy to stay legal - not much help if you are going for banzai RP3 laps though :(

    Most if not all of the cars are travelling above 20mph. Apart from the ones that stop without warning to look at the cute little deer :roll:

    Just got back from a nice run. Good conditions. Just went out for a spin really but after a 19min first lap felt good so pushed on a bit. Last lap was a traffic write off, though, with a police car parked opposite ham gate. Then I got stuck behind (I haven't got the overtaking bit yet) a slow car from Broomfield car park all the way to the sheen roundabout. Was down about 20 on normal cadence for that section. Still, room for major improvement :)

    Just a quick warning about the Police.

    A colleague of mine was driving through the park this morning and tells me the police pulled over a big gang of cyclists. I am guessing it was one of the Dynamo chaingangs but not 100%sure. They were apparently riding +3 abreast and tailgating.

    The old addage that a select few ruin it for the masses springs to mind. I'm sure I don't need to add, but will anyway, to ride sensibly and be considerate even if the car drivers aren't.

  • Cars and Police are a pain in the backside. I guess my brother an I were in the park a bit late yesterday but christ the cars are annoying and must have taken a good 30-40 secs off of my time....how about a "congestion charge" for cars entering the park?

    anyway my time is below. At the start of the year I did it is around 1hr 12-15 mins with drafting and was completely wasted. yesterday, no drafting and felt good afterwards. Next aim is sub 58 mins I guess

    It's just an indication of cycling experience/training goals. I'm thinking of starting some road racing (RRs), so i'm comparing myself against the guys with 4thCatRR and seeing what the 3rd cats and above can do...

    As Jon mentioned T O R (type of rider) gives you an idea of the level of fitnesses required relative to the time reached.

    1. Anyone of 3rd cat RR standard shouldn't have too much difficulty getting under the hour assuming your not carrying too much weight.

    2. Sportiv riders again less than 60 mins is a great fitness marker

    3. 4th cats and fitness riders should be able to get under 70mins.

    4. Of course its all subject to how motivated you are and ideal conditions (lack of wind, traffic) weight, experience, training status etc

    Hi I'm new to this forum, but been cycling in Richmond Park for a couple of years, mainly just as a little bit of extra training for my main sport-rowing. I've never got round to doing 3 competitive laps though until today. Thought the conditions were pretty good, and I managed 3 clean laps, jus got slowed behind a police car on the downhill from richmond gate to ham gate.
