Everyday car, 2008 BMW 320d SE. Unbelievably capable, economical fast motorway mile muncher, if a bit dull.

Other car, 1995 Land Rover Discovery Tdi, fully pimped for off roading. 265 75 16 tyres, plus 2" suspension lift all round, underbody protection, snorkel, A bar, spots etc. Pretty thirsty but good fun.

And I get to thrash the better half's MX5 if I want some sideways action!

Citroen Xsara Picasso 2.0 HDi, 48mpg average (better on a run), £120 a year road tax, insurance group 7, 3 bmx and 3 adults no problem, not tried mtb yet as we ride to our detinations.

Not as fun as my Volvo 740 estate though.

I drive a 1999 Ford focus 1.8 zetec with 17" alloys and is lowered 30mm. Not quite as exciting as some of the other cars on here but is pretty good on fuel, fast enough for me, comfortable, well equiped and is big enough to get my bike and sails in with no probs (i dinghy sail too btw!). So does me fine!
Bikes are OK, I guess... :-)

The VR is lovely - so smooth and goes like a rocket (de-catted with a straight through Miltek system), but i regret selling the MK2 like hell. Tried to flog the VR about 6 months ago and was going to replace it with another MK2 but alas, the credit crunch put a dampner on people wanting a 2.8 V6!

Have you fettled with the suspension? I found the VR6 a bit soft and rolly which is why I got a 16v mk3 GTi instead (bit firmer, lighter engine so less nose heavy).

I also didn't like the mk4 GTi - in fact I despised it. Very soft, pretty slow. Then I tested the R32 not expecting much and was gobsmacked - it handled REALLY well and sounded amazing. Will always miss that VR6 (the R32 engine is very similar to the VR6, just 3.2 instead of 2.8 and mine was mildly chipped to 260bhp) noise and seamless power.

    335d Touring next...

No, haven't touched the suspension. The suspension on the VR6 is actually stiffer than the MK3 Gti's - spring rate was increased to cope with the extra weight - it just doesn't feel like it! It handles OK but is a bit "wallowy". The MK2 was lowered about 80mm so it was like driving a go-kart - great fun but was less than comfortable!

I though the VR6 and R32 engines were completely different :? Not sure about the R32 but the VR6 is a very narrow V (barely even a true V6) with just one head covering the two banks of cylinders. It was done to save space in the engine bay i believe. It also has only 2 valves per cylinder, so 12 valve, unlike most V6's being 24 valve. Bit like the difference between the 8 valve and 16 valve gti's, it makes it's peak torque lower in the rev range, making them allegedly more driveable with more useable power delivery. I remember the gti being pretty dead below 4,000rpm and then taking off like a scolded cat! The VR just pulls from pretty much any revs in any gear.

I really fancy slapping on a Votex supercharger - now that would be fun 8)

Nerd mode on - the 16v suspension is stiffer and lower than the 8v (which shouldn't be called a GTi IMO!!). Like the mk2 16v it needed ragging to get the best from it. I actually liked it a lot. The 16v also came with 205 tyres as standard, the VR6 came with 195s - which sort of shows that the 16v was a bit more "sporty" and the VR6 was more of a fast cruiser.

The R32 engine was based closely on the VR6 one (i.e. very narrow V6) used in yours and the V6 4 Motion mk4 - bored out and tweaked but similar but it was 24v not 12. It had power from any revs with no gaps right up to 7k rpm. Not a lot of power for a 3.2 litre 6 pot but it always felt like "easy" power and it revved like a supercar (very quickly) which was great but made slow driving very tricky and speeds humps a nightmare.

The R32's weakness is it's overall weight - not far off 1500kgs!

Okay - I'll shut up now...

Mine is an '05 Ibiza FR TDI PD 130

Had it about a year now and I absolutely love it! Easily average over 50mpg, closer to 60 on A roads and the engine's lovely and torquey so it's bloody quick where you really need it

Currently has a big greasy mark on the internal roof lining where my rear mech rubbed on it  Anyone know how to clean it off?

Posh car-2008 BMW 320d SE, bit of a repmobile but 8 sec 0-60/145mph and 50mpg in real world use kinda makes sense. RWD rocks too.

Not so posh car-1995 Land Rover Discovery 300 Tdi, somewhat pimped with +2" suspension lift, 265 mud tyres, A-bar, lights, snorkel, bashguards etc...it will certainly go places my Trek won't!

    Oh yeeeeeeeeeahhhhh.

AND it has a V8 TDi sticker on the back, courtesy of Halfords. I think it has around 45 bhp, and does 0-60 in literally 30 seconds. Max speed (when I lived in Germany, on the autobahn, downhill, after a 3 mile run-up) 96, yes thats right, a mighty 96 mph!

Nice motor Andy FSR. Love those wheels. Toyed with the idea of getting a 120d MSport last summer, but decided it was a bit small. Still a tad of regret about not going for it. Saying that i'm quite happy with my current car

Yeah it's the same as a snorkel for a person, the air intake is routed higher (usually to the top of the windscreen) so water doesn't get drawn into the engine when driving in deep water.
