Midz - can't be many of those around (with such low mileage)!

Sold mine many years ago with 180k on the clock. Very few problems with it in 2 years ownership.

Ben - they are pretty old now. For similar fun these days you'd have to go Clio Sport 182/197, Civic Type R or maybe Mini Cooper S.

Aye i know that... but they're sweet! only 2 years ago I was looking at putting 3k down on a black GTi-6 with 40k on the clock. Just coudn't afford the insurance. Now though, you can pick up a 70K miles GTi-6 for around 1.5k. and thats all there is!!

I've been eyeing up a clio 172 cup, but I'd prefer a pug methinks..... plus, i'm a bit big for a clio

The Rev - I bought it (1986 mk2 GTi 8v) aged 10 years with 150k on the clock (for next to nothing)!

Ben - trouble is Pugs of late have been a bit cack. Nothing like the GTi-6. Renault have made some great cars BUT have hideous reliability and comedy customer "service."

Worth looking at a mk3 GTi 16v or VR6? I had the former for 3 years and it was super reliable, pretty quick and cheap to run. Unlike the R32 I replaced it with...

Getting a bit interested in another car (currently have a rather dull but very handy 1.9CDTi 150bhp 05 plate Astra Estate and a little 4x4 for the boat). Been eyeing up mostly 3 series Bimmers - 335d still looks the best bet but also keen on the 335i or a very late E46 M3. Hmmm... Also vaguely tempted by something daft like a Westfield.
And the dinky 4x4 might have to be replaced with a Defender too.

Yea.. i've been looking at the 206 gti, but I wasn't impressed with my old 206. Suspension was crap.

Whats the Golf 1.8T like? i've always prefered the 306 gti-6 to golfs...

Bro in law just bought a corrado vr6 mmmmm.

    Spec i'm after..
    -Hot Hatch
-Under 40k is desired, but will go higher for the right car if needed.
    -5k max budget.

    I got a Pug 306 D-Turbo S

Nothing special but better than nothing! - It gets me from A to B with my bikes on the rack. Half decent fuel economy, an engine that never dies and plenty of space inside!

Don't know if I mentioned before but I had a Pug 306 diesel a couple of years ago. In the space of a year pretty much everything broke on it EXCEPT the engine which is really properly bombproof. Will be staying clear from now on......

Anyway, finally got round to sorting the rotten backbox on the 147:

    Before :( :

    After :D :

Very pleased because I was worried it would sound a bit chavvy but there's very little change, just more grumble at low revs and a nice aggressive roar over 4500rpm. Does stick out a little bit so need to check the clamp hasn't come loose and let it slip but it's all wet on the floor now.

  • awesome :) thats how my bro fixed his rotten exhaust on his vectra.

And yea, the electrics were well fun on my 306.. not.

Still..... i HATE new cars. anyone else? I prefer old cars and the fact that they aren't perfect. My 206 was boooorrrrrinnggg.... probably why i wrapped it round my mates rear bumper :)

Ben - the mk4 Golfs all (except the R32) handle pretty terribly. It can be sorted but you need extensive suspension mods. I'd rather have a Focus ST170 than a mk4 GTi - they handle brilliantly and are quite quick.
  • hummm, I had a browse at some st170's but they don't really do it for me. focus' don't for some reason :(

there's little that can match the 306 '6 "out-the-box" performance and handling. I don't really want to be modding if i'm honest.

I've seen a few nice models, all depends whats available when the time comes.

toyed with the idea of a 205 1.9gti, but I think the GF would leave me.

How about a Fabia vRs? they seem to be coming into my price range at around 40k on th clock.
Mate had one and it went like stink!

Ben - again they are quite quick but handle very badly on stock suspension (tested one a while back). Chip and lower it and you have a pokey car but until then, it will annoy you.

306 GTi-6 is a great package - just pretty old now.

The Focus ST170 is still the best handling FWD car I have driven (a lot better than the newer one) - just the engine is a bit wheezy.

Unfortunately a lot of modern hot hatches can blow a GTi-6 away - they do 0-60 in the high 7s/low 8s. They used to be really quick but a 172/182/CTR/Leon Cupra R/Ibiza Cupra and many others would batter one for performance now.
    Still sweet handlers though.
  • Whats the Skoda Octavia VRS like?

I'm hugely tempted by one, insurance is microscopic for some reason!! Kinda gives me best of both worlds.. power + space.

Should hopefully be putting cash down on a car in the next 6 - 7 weeks so my shortlist is being hacked about a bit :)

    Octavia is nice,

Drives alot like my Leon FR, only thing i found its not very pretty and it is HUGE, based on a stretched golf set up. well known to handle well just like the Leon which is know to be very easy to drive very quickly.

There are two diesel engines sets too look at too, the older PD engines and the replacement, the older PD have a real tractor sound when you start(i know i have one) but once your moving there fairly quiet and smooth and really easy to drive. Very tunable too if thats your thing.
  • Ive driven the Octavia VRs (petrol) and Fabia VRs (Diesel) and both went like stink. 0-60 the diesel was actually better, as the torque is immense but topped out lower than the petrol that could keep the foot down (at some speed) beyond the limit

Worth a look if insurance is cheap, and essentially they are Audi's with different badges & slightly lower spec now!

  • I'm looking at the 1.8T VRs (180bhp petrol). I actually like the look of them, not a fan of all the rounded lines of the newer cars.

GF seems happier about a bigger car too, in both my pugs (206 and 306) no-one had a chance of getting behind me. But in the 406 there was plenty of room. plus it was much nicer to drive.

    Edit...
FYI, insurance is £730 with 2 year no claims. However I may have 3 years (I can't bloody remember!) which will take it down much lower. Tis a steal compared to maost of the hot hatches i've been looking at!

The petrol is good, but i would strongly consider test driving a diesel too pokey.

Service costs are no longer an issue only the initial purchase cost. And i have found any fuel cost difference is blown away by the ability to do 50mpg when driving normally... also with tax costs goign through the rough the diesel is set to stay at £125 for the older PD engine and for the petrol over £200 and climbing year by year...

I rate the Skodas as the best handling, most sorted cars using that VAG platform.

Fabia suspension needs sorting but the Octavia is good as standard.
  • mm.. my last 3 cars were diesly weasily. Just don't want another.
I would get a fabia 1.9dt VRs... but i wasn't impressed with my mates. the cornering was shocking (hense him binning it ).
Tax bands don't bother me.... i'd rather have a car I wanted that something thats restricted by that..

Ben - cool! That 1.8T block is very very tuneable. I'm not keen on the sound it makes or the character of the engine but 300bhp is achievable without ruining it. Comedy dump valve in that car!

    That they do,

If you test drive and suits your style of driving i say go, great value for money cars with a very solid build.

Still can't get the 5th gear review out my head when i see a skoda superb at the moment when he used the hammer to show how well built it was and smashed the screen hehe

Ah i love the sound of that unit! i think i read that its the same block as the Leon FR? could be wrong though.
Seen a few with subtle mods and an easy 250bhp that looks and went very nicely indeedy.

I thought £250 was a lot for my 130bhp Passat Sport! And that's me and the missus!?
