incredibly - even for a big lad like me, they are incredibly stiff - even with the apparent lack of spokes!
they aren't expensive either - about the price of Aksiums I think.

Rolf - I'm thinking about a pair of Veloflex gum wall tyres. You rate them then?

I'll redress the balance and post my piece of crap:

I just got an email telling me Ribble have got the 25mm gum walled Veloflex masters back in stock (and at a decent price too). I want to try them but most got the feedback I've seen is that they gum sidewall is more delicate than the black.

    Ta for that.

After going away for Ultremos because of puncture protection i'm a little unsure about these...

Also, how light! The record is only 140g each...

Only been out the once - and I've not ridden the Look in ages so I may have been all over excited about the bike but I thought they were excellent - and that's with Vittoria Ultralite butyls rather than latex tubes (due to one of the Challenge ones I ordered being defective). They certainly gave a great ride.

The Veloflex tyres are made differently to normal tyres - the contact surface (ie the black bit on the gum walled ones) is glued to the carcasse so it doesn't get vulcanised hence doesn't lose suppleness. On that basis, unless the construction is different, the only extra strength in the sidewall of the Corsa (black walled) version would be in the pigment!

I nearly used the Look on Sundays club ride and was glad I didn't - in the group I hit a rock in the road square on and it hit both tyres pinch puncturing the rear. I did wonder how well the Veloflex would have survived that - the Ultremo on the Ribble was fine.

I think basically I'd say they are much nicer than normal clincher tyres but I'd have them on a set of wheels I don't always have to use.

I've also got a pair of Vittoria Open Corsas to try sometime!

Somehow I don't think they are the tyre for you!

    Cheers for that.

I've got Vittora Open Corsas and Veloflex Open Corsas sati in the garage waiting to be used, once my current Open Paves die. I was also thinking about getting some Veloflex Open Masters and Challenge Stradas to compare, having really liked the Challenge Open Grifos on the CX.

I gor carried away on the Ribble site the other day and had £200 worth of Italian / Thai rubber in my basket before coming to my senses and closing te browser.

Are you sure the Veloflex Open Corsas aren't Veloflex Corsas? Therefore they ought to be equivalent to the Master. Easy enough then to decide if you want another pair with gumwalls!

Would be interesting to know how the Challenge tyres compare with the others but, as you found, it's easy to get expensively carried away with something that really isn't necessary!

Oh yeah, Corsa 25s. Without looking at the box I'd assumed they were called Open Corsas because they aren't tubs. Really looking forward to using them; it says a lot about the flexibility of the tyre that Veloflex manage to fold a 25mm Corsa into a box less than half the size of what Vittoria manage with a 25mm Open Corsa.

Thanks Rolf. Maybe not the right tyres for me then... shame.

Here is my commuting bicycle pictured on its way to the local refuse and recycling centre in Hove. There is a dispute currently between the recycling people and the council in Brighton & Hove so often recycling is not being collected.

Bicycle is a Moulton APB, actually created out of two old ones I had. Trailer is a Roland "Der Roland", a big brute of a thing which is great for trips to the DIY store or the gardening centre.

I don't actually commute in the normal sense because I work from home, but I use this APB for all shopping and general trips.

Currently the bicycle is a 9 speed but it may get a Schlumpf Speed Drive next year.

It has a Schmidt hub dynamo for the front light, which is a great thing imho.

    My general purpose steed.

Obviously still a work in progress. That stack of spacers will have to go, for one thing. A better chainset would be nice as well.

Apologies for the non-OCD gear position. I live up a very big hill.

The dry weather crit machine, pretty sure it originates from the USA and could well be the only one in the UK.

My sparkly new Carrera Gryphon. Picked it up today from Halfords - cycle2work.

The bike mechanics made a complete shambles of the assembly and checks so I've had to tweak just about everything, but it is now in fine fettle.

You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

very nice clean looking bike Asprilla! my new um old commute bike is my old MTB IMG_1116_zps29e4aa47.jpg

It's slow but it handles well, comfortably able to catch up with mopeds etc the other day around Richmond Town center on a wet and greasy day. I had though of changing the tyres, but they aren't that slow and stick to road, how ever greasy and having recently late year given the old girl new brakes and gears, its good that as my wife calls it, my comfort bike is being used, which I am now its how I get to work, sadly rather a lot of frontal area with the wind of late, though being so heavy, well over 40lb possibly close to 50lb it isn't bothered by side winds....
