Off now to do some cycling.

A bit different to C+ but it's comsmetic. Any forum is only as good as it's community. Or as bad.

You know, the thing that gets me as that the logo at the top left of the screen says BETA, so the forum is still undergoing testing.

If anybody cares about such things, a beta version is the first version released outside the organization or community that develops the software, for the purpose of evaluation or real-world black/grey-box testing. The process of delivering a beta version to the users is called beta release. Beta level software is between 60% and 70% complete, generally includes all features, but may also include known issues and bugs of a less serious variety.

The users of a beta version are said beta testers. They are usually customers or prospective customers of the organization that develops the software. They receive the software for free or for a reduced price, but act as free testers.

So why the heck has it been launched as live in place of the old forums?

Because if you were still allowed to use the old forum, no-one would bother to test the new one.
If you had to pay for old forum, and you were given a free trial or money off your subscription for testing this one, then it might be possible to run them both in tandem till any problems with the beta had been ironed out. But as it is, it appears you want the moon on a stick. You don't want to have to bother doing the testing yourself, yet you want it delivered to you in a nice shiny shrink-wrapped package all fully tested brand spanking new and bug-free ready for you to use. Well sorry, that doesn't happen. It's called UAT.

UAT is usually done by a limited number of users on a non-live version of the system before system go-live (or patches are put in place). You wouldn't just turn a new system on and then UAT as-you-went.

Beta versions of things aren't usually welcome to everyone - Google mail, for example, had a limited, invite-only launch. Alternatives are generally available. To turn the old forum completely off, and to force everyone to switch to a new, forum which is not yet fully functional.. well, you must be able to see why people are fed up.

vBulletin allows sections of the bard to be collapse to a heading banner.

That would be a useful facility for this new super-board.

If I only ever want to look at (say) the road section, that's the only section I need see in detail.

The forum index it just too long to be convenient.

    What are Beta Blockers then?

Well, quibble over the definition of UAT if you want, but at least it works. Let's face it people are only whinging because they have to see MTB forums and because the formatters are turned off - they aren't exactly critical issues.
Course I can see why people - well, roadies mainly, are fed up - because like I say, they want the moon on a stick. It isn't delivered, so they whinge.
It's actually a much faster server than the old one, and it's handling MBUK aswell as C+. Be grateful.

    What I've said as well.

    Shame it's fragmented the community.

Other than the Cafe, the various threads on CycleChat have been dead since Oct 2006 - a few cropping up now but very slow. The thread new/update count on C+/Radar is still vigorous on the areas that I visit first - beginners, touring, know how - and CakeStop is picking up again.

The loss to C+/Radar is the general posts from the deserters; many had been involved in cycling for some time and their comments in the non-CakeStop sections were often helpfull.

So, at the moment I'm visiting both - Radar if I want to read about cycling matters and CycleChat to find out who's doing what to who.
